The hidden costs of excessive screen media use in children

New research highlights how children in India lag behind the global average screen time guidelinesWith lasting effects on health and cognitive abilitiesMultiple screens have become an integral part of children’s lives. But is it safe for young teens to spend so much time on screens? Existing research findings suggest that devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and TVs can aid learning, but their excessive use is associated with adverse health and developmental outcomes.A recent study* published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry examined children and adolescents with mental disorders to assess their screen usage habits. The findings are shocking: The average daily screen time was 3.1 hours. Importantly, two-thirds of the 212 study participants (average age 13 years) exceeded the recommended screen time limits set by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). These guidelines recommend no screen exposure for children under two years of age (except video calls), less than one hour per day for ages two to four years, and a maximum of two hours per day for children ages five years and older.

-

The study revealed that television (66%) and mobile phones (70.3%) were the most commonly used devices among the 212 children and adolescents who were part of the study. Alarmingly, 22.2% of children meet the criteria for screen media addiction based on DSM-5 standards for Internet Gaming Disorder. DSM-5 is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, a guide used by researchers to diagnose, classify, and treat mental health disorders.Addiction was more prevalent among boys from joint or extended families and among children suffering from neurodevelopmental or disintegrative disorders.Excessive screen use contributes to obesity, sedentary behavior, poor dietary habits, and disrupted sleep. Cognitively, prolonged exposure can impair language development, executive functioning, and emerging literacy skills. Research also shows that structural brain changes occur in preschool children with high screen exposure, particularly affecting white matter pathways (which act as the brain’s communication network), which are important for learning and communication.Psychosocially, children addicted to screen media often display deception (hiding or lying about using devices), preoccupation, withdrawal symptoms, and conflict within families. Screen use also interferes with friendships and family activities, while increasing susceptibility to cyberbullying, unsafe online content, and negative emotional states. The study underlines the urgent need for parental awareness and regulation. Parents often allow children with neurodevelopmental disorders extra screen time as a coping measure, but this leads to more problems. In a joint family setting, inconsistent parenting rules can further compound the problem. In conclusion, screen media use among children is not inherently harmful, but excessive and unregulated use poses significant risks to physical health, cognitive development, and emotional well-being. With approximately one-quarter of children in psychiatric care showing signs of addiction, regular assessment of screen habits and strict adherence to recommended guidelines are essential steps to protect the next generation.(*Problematic screen media use among children and adolescents attending child and adolescent psychiatric services in a tertiary care center in North India, by Venkatesh Raju, Akhilesh Sharma, Ruchita Shah, Ravikant Tangela, Sana Devi Yumnam, Jyoti Singh, Jayvinder Yadav and Sandeep Grover)

Pentagon tells Congress: America spent more than $11.3 billion in the first 6 days of the war

American victory just a fantasy? 11 billion dollars were burnt in 6 days, Iran is defiant and fighting. Watch

Pentagon officials told US lawmakers in a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday that they estimated the cost of the war against Iran to exceed $11.3 billion in the first six days alone, according to three people familiar with the briefing. The estimate did not include many costs associated with the operation, such as the build-up of military hardware and personnel before the first attacks. For this reason, lawmakers expect that number to increase significantly as the Pentagon continues to calculate the costs accrued in the first week.

American victory just a fantasy? 11 billion dollars were burnt in 6 days, Iran is defiant and fighting. Watch

Still, it appears to be the most comprehensive assessment yet received by Congress amid growing questions about the war’s objectives, scope, and timeline. The New York Times and The Washington Post previously reported that defense officials said in a recent congressional briefing that the military had used $5.6 billion worth of munitions in the first two days of the war. This is far greater than the publicly reported quantity and rate of munitions being burned. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated that the cost of the first 100 hours of operation was $3.7 billion, or $891.4 million each day.The first wave of bombings used weapons including AGM-154 glide bombs, which can cost $578,000 to $836,000. The Navy bought 3,000 of them about two decades ago. Since then, the US military has said it will begin using much less expensive bombs such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition. The smallest size weapon costs about $1,000, and the guidance kit costs about $38,000.Some Republicans – including Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, chairman of the subcommittee that funds the Pentagon – have urged during several administrations that the United States increase its spending on munitions production. But other Republicans have been hesitant to increase military funding and in recent days have questioned the idea of approving costly supplemental funding for a conflict they worry it could open. And Democrats have expressed considerable skepticism about his willingness to support an emergency funding measure for the operation.

When medical care fails: What the Supreme Court’s passive euthanasia ruling means india news

Historic decision: Supreme Court allows passive euthanasia to Harish Rana after being in coma for 13 years

In a landmark ruling that revisits one of medicine’s toughest ethical questions, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the withdrawal of artificial life support — or passive euthanasia, as it is commonly called — for a 31-year-old man who had been in a coma for more than 13 years. The judgment in the Harish Rana case is the first time that the court has directly allowed passive euthanasia for a patient in a permanent vegetative state. Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar Former AIIMS chief and professor of onco-anesthesia and palliative medicine explains times of India What does this mean in medical practice, and how do doctors decide when to withdraw life support? What does passive euthanasia mean in medical practice? In simple terms, it involves withdrawal of life support, stopping some types of artificial support that prolong life without improving the patient’s condition. For example, doctors may discontinue artificial nutrition, fluids, or other life-sustaining measures when they are no longer beneficial. The aim is not to actively end life, but to prevent treatments that only increase suffering, and allow the disease to continue its course when recovery is not possible.

Historic decision: Supreme Court allows passive euthanasia to Harish Rana after being in coma for 13 years

In what situations do doctors consider withdrawing life support?Doctors consider this when the treatment is not providing any benefit to the patient and his suffering is only increasing. In such cases, continuing aggressive medical support may not be in the best interests of the patient. Conditions may include permanent vegetative state, severe and irreversible brain injury, terminal cancer, end-stage kidney failure where dialysis is no longer effective, or advanced heart disease where treatment options have been exhausted. This may include withdrawal of ventilatory support, stopping medications that artificially maintain blood pressure, dialysis, artificial feeding through tubes, or other interventions that maintain physical functions without improving the patient’s condition.

-

How do doctors determine whether a patient has no chance of recovery, and what safety measures should be followed before withdrawing life support in India? There are established medical criteria and tests. For example, specific instruments are used to confirm conditions such as coma or vegetative state. In incurable diseases such as advanced cancer, prognosis and chances of cure are assessed using evidence-based medical guidelines. In India, review is usually done by primary and secondary medical boards before any decision is taken. In some cases, hospital ethics committees may also be involved to ensure that the procedure follows medical ethics and legal guidelines set by the Supreme Court. These measures ensure that the decision is medically appropriate and ethically correct. How important are living wills or advance directives? They are extremely important. If a patient has clearly stated in advance what type of treatment they would or would not like in such circumstances, the doctor and family may follow their wishes. Respecting patient autonomy is a fundamental principle of medical ethics. How often do doctors in India receive requests to withdraw life support? It is still relatively rare in India.Awareness of advance directives is limited. Culturally, many families find it difficult to accept death as a natural part of life. What is the difference between active and passive euthanasia, and how does the latter differ from assisted suicide or assisted death?Active euthanasia involves deliberately administering drugs that cause death. Passive euthanasia refers to the withdrawal or stopping of treatments that artificially maintain life and includes stopping medical interventions that are no longer beneficial. Assisted suicide involves actively helping a person end their life, usually by providing medication that the person takes themselves. What are some common misconceptions about passive euthanasia? Many people believe that this means that doctors are actively trying to end the patient’s life. In fact, it usually involves stopping medical interventions that are no longer useful, and focusing on comfort, care, and respect at the end of life. From a medical ethics perspective, why are these practices treated differently?Medical ethics emphasize doing no harm and avoiding treatments that provide no benefit. When treatment only increases suffering with no real possibility of cure, it may be considered morally justified to withdraw it.

Government plans to punish erring e-scooter companies ETAuto

<p>“/><figcaption class=MHI is in the process of releasing subsidies to companies that have got a clean chit in these investigations and said all valid claims will be cleared by the end of the month.

The Center is considering measures to punish half a dozen electric scooter makers who have been found guilty of wrongly claiming subsidies under Flagship. fame ii (Rapid Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) Scheme.

A senior government official said barring these companies from availing government subsidies in future as well as not allowing them to avail discounts on vehicles sold in the last 15 months were some of the steps under consideration.

Last month, the government had sent recovery notices worth about Rs 500 crore to seven companies – hero electricOkinawa Autotech, Ampere EV, Revolt Motors, Benling India, Lohia Auto and AMO Mobility – required for violation of local sourcing norms fame II To claim incentives.

Lohia is a manufacturer of 3-wheeler electrics. “This (disbarment) is one of the options being considered. We will take a final decision after recovering the dues,” a senior government official said on condition of anonymity.

Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) – the nodal ministry for the scheme – is discussing the option with other departments of the government as it impacts investment. If a company is disqualified, it will not get incentives on future sales of electric two-wheelers under the scheme and will also have to give up incentives earned on vehicles sold in the last 15 months.

Responding to a query from ET, a spokesperson for Greaves Electric Mobility, which sells the Ampere EV, said it is working with the government to better understand their concern and has filed a detailed representation in this regard. “GeM is committed to helping realize India’s ambitions to become a world leader in the development, engineering and manufacturing of electric vehicles,” he said.

AMO Mobility said most of its customers were beneficiaries of fame will put subsidy Scheme launched by the Government of India.

“We would like to bring to your attention that AMO Mobility has only received subsidy of Rs 0.85 crore and the subsidy amount given to customers so far is approximately Rs 11 crore. “We are in discussion with the agency and the ministry to resolve our issue, even if it is minor, and support us in shifting the paradigm from conventional to electric mobility in India,” a company spokesperson said. “We would like to clarify that Okinawa has not received any official communication regarding the exemption.” In the meantime, we have actively submitted all necessary documents to the relevant ministry, demonstrating our commitment to compliance,” the Okinawa spokesperson said.

Revolt Motors and Benling India did not respond to ET’s queries on the matter till press time on Monday.

The Center had suspended subsidy distribution of Rs 1,400 crore under this fame ii The vehicle testing agencies ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) and iCAT (International Center for Automotive Technology) are pending completion of inquiries into 13 companies on whether they have violated local sourcing norms by using components imported from China in their vehicles.

MHI It is in the process of releasing subsidies to companies given clean chit in these investigations and said all valid claims will be cleared by the end of the month. “We have already paid around Rs 200 crore (of stalled subsidies). We will pay most of the claims by the end of the month,” the official said.

Overall, the government has received 1,050,000 claims for incentives from companies registered under FAME II. Of this, MHI has not approved claims on 400,000 electric two-wheelers. This includes claims for sale of two-wheelers made by errant companies, claims for sale of two-wheelers in states that are not registered on the vehicle portal of the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and claims for sale of two-wheelers on which questions regarding the information given (such as duplicate battery numbers, mismatch in names, etc.) have been raised by the authority.

E-scooter companies differ on impact of FAME II subsidy cut on sales

On Wednesday, the central government decided to reduce the FAME II subsidy for electric two-wheelers to Rs 10,000 per Kwh from Rs 15,000 per Kwh. The maximum subsidy limit of 40% of the ex-factory price of the vehicle has been reduced to 15%.

E-scooter companies are ready to gradually increase prices

But not everyone agrees with the price hike. Hero Electric, which sells Optima among other brands, has decided not to increase prices immediately. “Despite the recent cut in FAME-2 subsidy, the company remains dedicated to promoting the adoption of e-two-wheelers and removing misconceptions about their cost of ownership,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday. FAME stands for rapid adoption and manufacturing of hybrid and electric vehicles.

Hero Electric will not increase prices even after FAME II subsidy cut

The company said it is dedicated to promoting the adoption of E2Ws and dispelling misconceptions about their cost of ownership.

SMEV appeals to NITI Aayog to review FAME policy

“The actions of the Ministry of Heavy Industries in the last 18 months such as stopping subsidies, seeking retrospective withdrawal of subsidies given in 2019, removing companies from the NAB portal and now the latest step of cutting subsidies are likely to impact sales and delay the process of EV adoption and entry in the country,” SMEV said.

UAE News: No new permits required, special entry rules for residents with expired visas amid Iran vs US-Israel war

UAE News: No new permits required, special entry rules for residents with expired visas amid Iran vs US-Israel war
UAE takes surprise visa step for expatriates stranded abroad amid Iran vs US-Israel war

Aiming to minimize travel disruptions and support thousands of residents stranded abroad, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has announced a temporary measure, allowing expatriate residents whose UAE residency visas have expired to return to the country without having to apply for a new entry permit. The policy will remain in effect until March 31, giving affected residents a crucial window to re-enter the country and regularize their immigration status. The decision comes at a time when widespread flight disruptions and regional tensions have left many expatriates unable to travel back to the UAE before their visas expire. Officials say the measure reflects the country’s flexible administrative approach during extraordinary circumstances and is aimed at reducing the burden on residents caught up in travel disruptions.

united arab emirates One month relaxation granted for residents stranded amid Iran vs US-Israel war

According to the ICP, the temporary rule applies to residents who were outside the UAE when their residence permit expired on or after February 28, 2026. Instead of going through the normal process of applying for a new entry visa, eligible individuals can now travel directly back to the UAE within the specified period. The measure will be valid until March 31, effectively giving migrants a one-month grace period to return and ascertain their visa status after arrival. Once back in the country, residents can complete the necessary procedures to renew or regularize their residence through the relevant immigration authorities. Immigration officials stressed that the initiative is designed to simplify procedures for residents who were previously unable to return due to circumstances beyond their control.

Airspace closure and travel disruption behind UAE’s decision amid Iran vs US-Israel war

Officials indicated that the policy was introduced partly in response to regional airspace closures and flight suspensions, which prevented many residents from traveling back to the UAE before their residence permits expired. The wider Middle East has faced significant aviation disruptions in recent weeks due to rising regional tensions, forcing airlines to cancel or divert flights to several Gulf countries. These disruptions left many expatriates stranded abroad, unable to renew their visas or return home in time. By allowing residents to re-enter without a new permit, authorities hope to reduce the administrative hurdles that typically accompany expired residence permits.

No penalty for UAE residents affected by extraordinary circumstances amid Iran vs US-Israel war

Another important aspect of the policy is the waiver of penalties for residents whose visas expired while they were outside the country due to these extraordinary travel conditions. Authorities confirmed that eligible individuals will be able to return and regularize their residence status without incurring penalties related to overstaying abroad, provided they enter the UAE during the grace period. The relief measure is expected to benefit thousands of migrants who work in sectors ranging from finance and technology to construction and hospitality. Officials said the decision is also aimed at helping families reunite. Many residents who traveled abroad earlier this year were unable to return due to flight cancellations and border restrictions, leaving family members isolated for weeks.ICP said the initiative is in line with broader government efforts to ensure that residents can continue their lives and contribute to the country’s economy without unnecessary immigration barriers. The United Arab Emirates is home to the world’s largest expatriate population, with foreign nationals making up approximately 90% of the country’s residents. Therefore, policies that ease immigration processes during emergencies are important to maintain economic stability and workforce continuity.

A pattern of flexible immigration measures by the UAE

The latest decision is part of a series of flexible visa policies introduced by the UAE in response to unexpected travel disruptions. In recent weeks, authorities have also announced measures such as visa grace periods, waivers on overstay fines and extended time limits for travelers affected by airport closures. These policies are designed to ensure that residents and visitors are not penalized for circumstances beyond their control. Immigration analysts say such measures reflect the UAE’s broader strategy to maintain its reputation as a global hub for talent, business and expatriate communities.

What immigrants need to know

There are some key points residents planning to return to the UAE under this policy should keep in mind:

  • This rule only applies to residents whose visa expired while they were outside the country.
  • The grace period runs till March 31, 2026.
  • Travelers are not required to apply for a new entry permit during this period.
  • Once back in the UAE, they must complete residence renewal or status improvement processes through official channels.

Immigration officials have encouraged affected residents to return within the stipulated time frame to avoid complications after the temporary policy ends. This announcement sends a clear signal about the UAE’s approach during a period of uncertainty. Instead of imposing strict immigration rules during exceptional circumstances, the government has opted for practical solutions that prioritize the welfare of residents. For thousands of migrants who feared losing their residency status due to expired visas while abroad, the new policy offers a lifeline and a chance to return home without bureaucratic hurdles. As travel conditions across the region gradually stabilize, officials say the temporary measure should help restore normal immigration processes, while also ensuring that no residents are unduly harmed by disruptions beyond their control.
