Will Indians be able to stream the FIFA World Cup on YouTube? | football news

Will Indians be able to stream the FIFA World Cup on YouTube?
Indian football fans may miss the official FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage after broadcaster talks failed and YouTube faces geo-restrictions on access.

FIFA’s 2026 World Cup begins on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and for the first time in the tournament’s history, YouTube is an official part of how the world will watch it, but for fans in India, this development may mean little, because without holding domestic rights and an official broadcaster to participate in the arrangement, geo-restrictions may prevent much of the platform’s World Cup content from reaching Indian screens entirely. Hopes that Prasar Bharati might step in as an alternative option have also been dashed, as the broadcaster has reportedly told the Delhi High Court that it is not responsible for acquiring television rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India, making the situation more uncertain.

What the YouTube deal really offers

In March 2026, FIFA announces “game-changing partnership” With YouTube confirming that rights-holding broadcasters around the world will have the option to live stream the first ten minutes of each match on their official YouTube channels, the initiative is designed to attract younger, digital-native viewers towards the full broadcast. In addition to the ten-minute preview, broadcasters can also choose to stream select matches in full on YouTube, although FIFA has clarified that this will vary by region and is entirely at the discretion of individual rights holders, rather than a guaranteed provision in all markets.

Fans in the United States will have live access to every match of the tournament through YouTube TV, which holds the rights in that market, while other official broadcasters, among them Fox Soccer, Telemundo Deportes, beIN Sports, SuperSport, JTBC and KBS, are expected to publish previews, highlights and potentially full match streams through their own verified YouTube accounts. The official FIFA YouTube channel will also serve as a hub for highlights, archive footage, creator-led coverage and behind-the-scenes content throughout the duration of the tournament’s 104 matches.

However, the important limitation is that it is all linked to the territorial authority structure. Content published by a broadcaster on YouTube is typically geo-restricted to the region in which that broadcaster holds the rights, meaning that streams from American or European rights holders will generally not be accessible to viewers here. Without a domestic broadcaster participating in the YouTube arrangement, there is no Indian channel through which any live content will stream, and the FIFA Channel itself is not a substitute for live match access that only the rights-holding broadcaster can provide on the platform. Without a domestic broadcaster participating in the YouTube arrangement, many fans may be pushed toward unofficial workarounds such as VPNs or piracy sites, or relying on unofficial online watch parties, neither of which provide a stable or reliable viewing experience compared to official broadcasts.

Why doesn’t India have any broadcaster?

The reasons behind the impasse are primarily commercial, and they have been accumulating for months. FIFA’s original price for the combined Indian media rights covering the 2026 and 2030 World Cups was reported to be around US$100 million, a figure that did not garner any serious interest from broadcasters already committed to cricket and IPL rights, which have consumed the bulk of sports broadcasting budgets in recent years. FIFA reduced its valuation to around US$35 million after the market failed to respond, but even that figure did not lead to a deal. JioStar, a joint venture between Reliance Industries and Disney, submitted a bid of approximately USD 20 million, which was rejected by FIFA. The scheduling realities of North American tournaments have increased the reluctance, with most matches in India expected to be broadcast during late night and early morning hours, a timing problem that makes the commercial case for expensive rights significantly harder than expected viewership.

Prasar Bharati’s exit

The most consequential recent development was when Prasar Bharati told the Delhi High Court that it is not its responsibility to acquire the television rights of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The plea came in response to a petition seeking a free-to-air broadcast of the tournament through a state broadcaster, a path many were seeing as a possible last resort given the collapse of commercial talks. With Prasar Bharati now formally absolving itself of any obligation to secure the rights, that option is closed, and the June 11 launch date is approaching without any resolution.

where things stand

As things stand, no broadcaster has officially finalized the Indian media rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026 with just a few weeks left for the tournament to begin. FIFA has significantly reduced its asking price, the only significant commercial bid on record has been rejected, and the state broadcaster has told the court the case is not of its concern. The YouTube partnership, which FIFA has touted as a landmark moment for global digital football reach, will deliver it to fans in dozens of territories through their respective rights holders, but with no official rights holder here, Indian football fans face the real prospect of the biggest World Cup in history coming to a close with no legal and direct way to watch it, unless the broadcaster, FIFA or the government moves quickly to break a logjam that has already lasted too long. Running since.

'Amma Ariyan' won hearts at Cannes Film Festival after almost 40 years, screening took place after 4K restoration

Almost 40 years after its original release, Malayalam classic ‘Amma Ariyan’ received an emotional standing ovation at the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The restored version of the film was screened under the prestigious Cannes Classics section, marking a proud milestone for Malayalam cinema on the international stage. After the screening, the audience warmly applauded actor Joey Mathew and the editor Beena PaulCelebrating the film’s long-awaited global recognition.

A historic moment for Malayalam cinema

directed by veteran john abraham‘Amma Ariyan’ was the only Malayalam film selected at this year’s festival and was one of the very few Indian titles to make it to the lineup. Originally released in 1986, the film gradually gained cult status among cinephiles and film students due to its bold political themes and experimental storytelling style. However, despite its impact, the film’s original negatives remained inaccessible to many audiences for years after they were reportedly lost. Its Cannes screening introduced this landmark film to a wider international audience previously unfamiliar with John Abraham’s cinematic vision.

‘Amma Ariane’ restored from surviving prints

The revival of ‘Amma Ariyan’ was possible due to the efforts of the Film Heritage Foundation and the Odessa Collective. The restoration team reconstructed the film in 4K using surviving prints obtained from the National Film Archives. The restored version allows audiences to experience the film with new visual clarity while preserving the raw artistic essence that made it iconic decades ago.Editor Beena Paul reflected emotionally on the film finally receiving worldwide appreciation. “I think this is a film that never got its due value when it was made,” he shared with Onmanorama. “It has a cult status in Kerala, especially among film students, but many people outside that circle have still not discovered it. It is a film that needs to be seen.”His statement was greatly appreciated by the audience, who saw the Cannes screening as an important moment in rediscovering one of the most influential works of Malayalam cinema.

John Abraham’s revolutionary vision

‘Amma Ariyan’ was the last feature film directed by John Abraham before his untimely death at the age of 49 in 1987. The filmmaker was known for rejecting mainstream commercial filmmaking and instead treating cinema as a collaborative artistic movement.Through the Odessa Collective, Abraham pioneered an unconventional publicly-funded production model, where ordinary people contributed directly to film production expenses. Decades later, many believe his vision was far ahead of its time and has continued to inspire generations of independent filmmakers.

Jupiter transit in Cancer for Aries/Aries ascendant 2026: Luck, property, foreign travel and expenses come into focus

Jupiter transit in Cancer for Aries/Aries ascendant 2026: Luck, property, foreign travel and expenses come into focus

For Aries ascendants, the transit of Jupiter into Cancer in 2026 is a major astronomical event, and it can leave a deep mark on both personal life and long-term direction. Cancer is the fourth house from Aries and is also the exalted sign of Jupiter. This means that Jupiter becomes very strong here, and when a strong Jupiter illuminates the fourth house, life often begins to get uprooted. For Aries ascendant, Jupiter rules your 9th house Sagittarius and your 12th house Pisces. Therefore, this transit does not operate only in one corner of life. It connects luck with home, father with property, higher education with emotional peace and foreign travel with expenses. In many cases, these topics will overlap. Why is this transit so important? The ninth house is one of the most auspicious houses in astrology. It represents father, guru, blessings, religion, fortune, legal matters, higher education, pilgrimage, foreign travel and divine support. On the other hand, the 12th house rules foreign lands, losses, expenses, debts, hospitals, sleep, separation, spiritual retreat and liberation-oriented experiences. Now both these houses are active through Jupiter, and Jupiter is transiting into your fourth house of home, property, mother, vehicles, domestic peace and inner stability. So for Aries ascendants, 2026 may bring a time where home decisions, family responsibilities, spiritual growth and destiny will all seem tied together. One door opens, and another comes in.Home, property and domestic peace take center stageFourth house is the first place where this transit will show clear results. You may think of buying land, booking a flat, changing house, renovating your current place or buying a vehicle. Some people may not make major purchases, but will still feel the desire to improve living conditions, upgrade comfort, or settle long-standing family matters. If your dasha and chart support it, this could be a strong period for property planning. The mind may go towards security. Towards the roots. Towards creating something that is sustainable. This transit can also improve domestic peace. You may get support through your mother, or your relationship with her may become stronger. If there has been instability in the home, this stage can gradually reduce the tension. Not every problem disappears at once, but the emotional breeze may become light, like the first cool breeze after a harsh summer.Ninth house brings luck, guidance and higher educationSince Jupiter is the lord of your ninth house, matters related to luck and blessings get a clear boost. You may get help from father, guru, teacher, guru or senior persons. In some cases, the father’s health, condition or progress becomes an important topic. In others, your relationship with him improves, or his advice makes more sense than before. This transit is also helpful for students and people planning for higher education. Master’s studies, research, academic development, competitive examinations and foreign education may all get a new impetus. If legal matters are pending, some movement may occur, especially if ongoing conditions favor closure or progress. Many people with Aries ascendant may feel that the stuck matters are slowly starting to open. Not overnight. But step by step. Jupiter often acts like a sunrise, at first quiet, then impossible to miss. You may also feel more attracted towards pilgrimage, charity, mantra meditation, temple visiting or learning scriptures. It’s not just about external success. It’s also about reconnecting with faith.Foreign travel and expenses increase togetherSince Jupiter also rules your 12th house, foreign relations become very active during this transit. This may appear in the form of foreign travel, foreign residence, immigration progress, work with foreign ties, or settling away from your birthplace. For some natives, this may be one of the most active topics of the year. But the 12th house also controls expenses and that part cannot be ignored. Expenditures on property, education, family needs, travel, hospital matters, loan repayment or spiritual activities may increase. It may seem overwhelming at times, but not all expenses are negative. Some expenses make sense. Paying off old debt, investing in a home, affording medical expenses or spending on education can really make life better permanently. So the lesson here is simple. Spend with awareness. Don’t panic just because the money is going out. Look why it’s moving.Jupiter and saturn activate the 12th houseOne of the strongest parts of this transit is the activation of your 12th house of Pisces by both Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter aspects Pisces from Cancer, while Saturn’s influence also falls there. This makes the affairs of the 12th house very lively. This combination may bring repayment of old debts, rising expenses, foreign travel, overseas settlement, hospital-related expenses, spiritual retreat, periods of isolation, disturbed sleep, or separation from things and people you no longer need. Some natives may face medical expenses if their chart already shows health concerns. For others, this same pattern may lead to living abroad, intense spiritual practice, or settling old liabilities.Saturn brings duties, delays, pressure and karmic settlement. Jupiter brings grace, understanding and protection. So this period may seem challenging, but it can also clear old burdens. Sometimes life empties space before giving peace.Protection from the eighth house, support from the tenth houseFrom Cancer, Jupiter is also aspecting your eighth house, Scorpio. It is the house of sudden events, inheritance, insurance, old problems, surgery, research, hidden knowledge and change. The aspect of Jupiter here can protect from big losses, as well as bring benefits through inheritance, insurance, spouse’s family or in-depth research. Those working in astrology, tantra, healing, psychology, investigation or research-based fields may benefit during this period. This is a good transit to learn what lies beneath the surface.Jupiter’s aspect to your tenth house, Capricorn, is another welcome sign. Career, profession, public image, boss, government work and status all get support. Better opportunities may be available. Seniors can guide you. Recognition may improve. If you are hoping for career advancement or a change in direction, this transit may open doors for you.But Capricorn is the zodiac sign of Saturn. Therefore, you will still need discipline, patience and proper effort. May Jupiter bless your fields, but you will have to sow the crop.Health, sleep and inner lifeThe fourth house also governs emotional peace, heart space, chest and inner stability. Exalted Jupiter here can provide healing, family support and a calm mind. Yet the activation of the 12th house means that sleep patterns, stress, digestion and emotional overload need to be monitored. If there is an existing medical problem, do not postpone treatment. Recovery improves with timely care.Spiritually, this transit holds significance. Navamesh is exalted. There is a stir in the 12th house. Jupiter aspects the eighth house. This is a strong indication for spiritual learning, karmic purification, pilgrimage, meditation, mantra, charity and seeking guidance from a Guru. You may feel called to go not just further, but deeper.Remedies and best way to use this transitSimple Jupiter remedies can help keep the energy of this period stable. Chanting “Om Gurve Namah” or “Om Brim Brihaspatye Namah” on Thursday can be beneficial. Donation involving yellow items like chana dal, turmeric, sweets or yellow clothes can help. Respecting father, guru, elders and teachers will strengthen the blessings of the ninth house. Serving mother and maintaining peace at home will help the fourth house. Donation to hospitals, ashrams or the needy can help balance the 12th house.Overall, Jupiter’s transit into Cancer may improve fortunes, property matters, family peace, foreign opportunities, education and spiritual growth for Aries ascendants. Also, expenses, loan repayments, medical expenses or withdrawal period may also increase.Use this transit wisely. Plan property matters carefully, control your expenses, do not neglect sleep or health and stay close to faith, discipline and good guidance. If you do this, this transit of Jupiter can become a turning point.

More than 4 lakh dog bite incidents in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in just four months, Supreme Court gives this decision

More than 4 lakh dog bite incidents in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in just four months, Supreme Court gives this decision

New Delhi: India is witnessing a rapid increase in dog bite cases. Supreme Court It has now stepped in with harsh comments over what it says is a public health situation that has reached “deeply disturbing proportions”. In a judgment passed on May 19, the court cited data showing that around 2.63 lakh dog bite cases were registered in Tamil Nadu and over 2 lakh such cases were registered in Karnataka and both in the first four months of 2026 alone. According to a report by Live Law, this raises serious concerns over public safety, management of stray dogs and the risk of rabies transmission. The observations came in a judgment confirming earlier directions to remove stray dogs from institutional premises and public places and check the state’s compliance with the animal birth control framework. What was said in the Supreme Court’s decision?A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria expressed concern over the increasing incidents of dog bites across the country and questioned whether the existing systems were working effectively in managing the situation of stray dogs. The court criticized the Central and State governments, saying that prolonged inaction had escalated the problem to seriously disturbing proportions, and that the response was largely reactive and crisis-driven rather than proactive and structured.According to the data discussed in the judgment, Tamil Nadu alone has recorded around 2.63 lakh dog bite cases and 17 deaths in the first four months of 2026. Karnataka recorded more than 2 lakh dog bite cases and at least 25 rabies-related deaths in the same period. The court further said that the issue reflects a sustained and widespread pattern of attacks resulting in serious physical injury, psychological trauma and in many cases even loss of human life. What regulations currently apply to stray dogs?India regulates the management of stray dogs through Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules made under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The framework was first introduced in 2001 and was strengthened through the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023.These rules focus on sterilization, anti-rabies vaccination and rehabilitation restrictions for stray dogs. Under the framework, stray dogs generally cannot be indiscriminately removed or killed. Instead, local authorities are expected to conduct sterilization and vaccination programs before releasing the dogs back into their areas.Animal rights groups argue that mass sterilization and vaccination are the only humane and scientifically effective long-term solutions. What concerns were raised before the Court? The court stated that animal birth control centers were inadequate and often lacked trained personnel, veterinary expertise and equipment. Existing facilities were running below capacity, hampering sterilization and vaccination drives.Questions were raised over whether state governments and municipal corporations were maintaining reliable data on stray dog population, vaccination coverage, sterilization targets and rabies-related deaths. The court further commented that although the ABC framework has been in existence for more than two decades, states and union territories have failed to expand the infrastructure to suit the growing stray dog population – leaving implementation “sporadic, underfunded and uneven”.Does the law allow removal of stray dogs?Generally, stray dogs cannot be arbitrarily relocated or killed merely because they are present in an area. However, officers may take action in cases involving rabid dogs, seriously aggressive animals or situations that pose an immediate threat to public safety. Nevertheless, procedures set out under animal welfare laws and municipal regulations must be followed. However, the Supreme Court made it clear that although animal welfare is constitutionally important, it cannot override the state’s obligation to protect human life. This legal balancing act between protecting human life and ensuring animal welfare remains at the center of ongoing debate.A dog bite doesn’t just mean getting hurt. The biggest concern is rabies – a viral disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.India accounts for a large share of rabies deaths globally every year. Children are among the most vulnerable victims as they are more likely to interact with stray animals and may not immediately report minor bites or scratches. The important thing is that the Supreme Court has also considered this a constitutional issue. It emphasized that the State has a duty under Article 21 to protect human life, and where human life and security are at stake, governments cannot cite financial constraints, administrative inconveniences or logistical difficulties as justification for inaction.

Why did the woman who stabbed her husband get away with just a fine of Rs 500? |

Why did the woman who stabbed her husband get away with just a fine of Rs 500?

New Delhi: The Telangana High Court upheld the conviction of a woman who stabbed her husband to death during a violent fight at their parents’ home, but reduced her sentence from four years of rigorous imprisonment to a mere fine of Rs 500.The case revolves around a sudden fight between a couple. According to court records, the husband initially went to the woman’s parents’ house with the children on dates. After the argument, he left, but later returned naked and allegedly abused and threatened the woman and her family again. In the midst of the confrontation, the woman picked up a knife and stabbed him, causing injuries that resulted in his death.Initially, the case was treated as murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, the trial court concluded that the incident did not amount to murder as there was no evidence of pre-planning or deliberate intent to kill. Instead, he was convicted under Section 304 Part II of the IPC, which deals with culpable homicide, and sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 500.

What legal exception did the court use?

The High Court relied on Exception 4 to Section 300 of the IPC, which says that a murder cannot be considered murder if it occurs suddenly during a fight, without any premeditation, in the heat of passion and without the accused taking unfair advantage or acting in a cruel or unusual manner. The court said the woman acted impulsively during a heated argument rather than carrying out a planned attack. It also noted that while his conviction was upheld – since stabbing with a knife is an act likely to cause death, establishing knowledge under Section 304 Part II – the circumstances warranted a lenient approach on sentencing.

Why was there no jail sentence?

The woman was originally sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment by the lower court. Hearing his appeal, the Telangana High Court took note of the circumstances surrounding the incident and decided not to impose further imprisonment. Instead, it changed the punishment to a fine of Rs 500 which was already part of the original order and which the woman had already paid.

Does this mean that killing during combat is always forgiven?

No, Indian law does not automatically condone violence committed during an argument or dispute. Courts closely examine factors such as intent, planning, nature of the weapon used, seriousness of the attack and whether the accused acted disproportionately. If the court finds evidence of clear intention or preparation to commit murder, the offense may still fall under the category of murder under section 302 of the IPC, which carries a much harsher punishment, including life imprisonment.

NEET-UG candidates eligible for compensation, reforms after cancellation: AIIMS faculty body

New Delhi: Terming the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 as extremely tragic for lakhs of medical aspirants, the AIIMS Faculty Association (FAIMS) has demanded compensation for the affected students, fast-track investigation into the alleged paper leak and comprehensive reforms in the country’s examination system. In a memorandum sent to the education and health ministries and the AIIMS director, the faculty body said repeated paper leaks have “severely shaken” public confidence in national examinations and have caused “unprecedented mental trauma, uncertainty and financial burden” on students and families.More than 22 lakh candidates appeared for the examination this year out of about 22.75 lakh registered candidates, the association said, adding that students from hundreds of cities had invested years of preparation and significant financial resources. While welcoming the decision to refund the exam fees and conduct the exams afresh without additional fees, FAIMS said the measures were “grossly inadequate”. Railway land worth Rs 600 crore, 500 huts, Eid scare: Why massive eviction drive turns into chaos in Mumbai
Western Railways launched a massive anti-encroachment drive in Mumbai’s Garib Nagar, demolishing hundreds of structures near Bandra station to reclaim valuable railway land.

Mumbai: In the biggest anti-encroachment drive ever undertaken by Western Railways in Mumbai, officials started demolishing hundreds of structures in Garib Nagar near Bandra railway station after getting approval from the courts. The operation, which began on Tuesday and continued amid violence on Wednesday, aims to reclaim about 5,200 square meters of railway land worth about Rs 600 crore.Officials said the settlement has expanded dangerously close to active railway infrastructure, including Harbor Line tracks and overhead electric equipment (OHE) masts. Many multi-storey slum structures had reportedly risen above the height of nearby footbridges, raising safety concerns for train operations and future railway expansion. What caused the destruction?According to railway officials, the proceedings under the Public Premises Act had started before 2017, and eviction orders were issued on November 27, 2017. The case then remained tied up in litigation before the Bombay High Court and later the Supreme Court of India. The Bombay High Court order passed on April 29 this year was later upheld in further proceedings and not stayed by the Supreme Court, allowing authorities to remove unauthorized encroachments while protecting structures found eligible through the joint survey process.Western Railways said around 500 huts were identified for demolition, while around 100 structures deemed eligible for rehabilitation or alternative housing were left untouched.Railway expansion plan is behind the approvalThe reclaimed land is expected to be used for expansion of major railway infrastructure around Bandra station. Western Railways is planning integrated development for both suburban and long distance train operations as part of Mumbai’s future capacity addition projects.Officials said the land around Bandra station is strategically important due to its proximity to the railway corridor and the nearby Bandra-Kurla Complex business district. Authorities have long viewed dense settlement as both a security threat and an obstacle to planned infrastructure integration.large scale deployment for operationThe demolition operation began with heavy security deployment. Authorities deployed around 400 police personnel, 400 GRP and RPF personnel and around 200 railway officials and staff in the area.To maintain law and order, several access points into Garib Nagar were sealed, including:

  • BMC Skywalk
  • Churchgate-end pedestrian bridge
  • Virar-end foot overbridge exit

Barricades were put up on the roads around Bandra station and Bandra Terminus, causing severe traffic jams and many railway passengers were forced to walk with luggage after vehicles were diverted.Violence flares up the next dayThe demolition action initially took place peacefully on Wednesday morning, but tension escalated around 3 pm when officials moved in to demolish an allegedly illegal prayer structure near the Bandra East Skywalk. Officials also claimed that a private telecom tower was installed there illegally.Police said the protesters threw stones, utensils and other objects at the demolition teams, leading to a lathi charge. Seven policemen and six protesters were injured, while 10 people were detained. An FIR was lodged at Nirmal Nagar police station on charges of unlawful assembly, rioting and attacking government officials. The injured were treated at Bhabha Hospital and VN Desai Hospital. Two injured persons – a policeman and a protestor – were admitted and said to be stable.Additional Police Commissioner Abhinav Deshmukh warned of strict legal action against those involved in the violence.

-

Residents allege lack of rehabilitationMany residents claimed that they have been living in Garib Nagar for decades and have civic documents such as house tax papers, water tax receipts and authorized electricity connections issued by the BMC.The families alleged that they were either given very little time to vacate or no arrangements were made for proper rehabilitation before the demolition. As bulldozers moved through the area, many residents – including children, senior citizens and newborns – were seen sitting outside near salvaged items in the scorching heat. Many residents also expressed anger that the demolition occurred just days before Eid celebrations on May 27. Locals said preparations for the festival were underway when the operation began. Some residents argued that earlier political leaders had assured the settlement of safety and said the government should provide compensation or alternative housing before carrying out demolition.By the end of the second day, officials said that about 60% of the demolition work had been completed. Western Railway has indicated that operations will continue till May 23 amid tight security arrangements.
