Congress condemns PM's parliamentary statement, demands debate

Dismissing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the situation in West Asia as a “master class in self-arrogance, cowardice and partisan rhetoric”, the Congress on Monday demanded a debate in Parliament on the ongoing conflict so that all parties can express their views on the issue. The Congress expressed concern over the Prime Minister’s reference to the Covid response in the context of the current crisis, saying the government’s performance during the pandemic was “disastrous”, even as it expressed hope that the government would now be better prepared. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Said that Modi did not say anything new in his statement in the Lok Sabha, which could have come earlier anyway. He said, “The notice we have given for discussion should be there so that we can also reply and all the parties can present their views.”Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said that the PM did not say a single word in condemnation of the ongoing US-Israeli attack on Iran.tnn

Green Cards for TPS: Give TPS holders green cards: Florida Democrat introduces new bill. Is it possible?

टीपीएस धारकों को ग्रीन कार्ड दें: फ्लोरिडा डेमोक्रेट ने नया बिल पेश किया। क्या ऐसा संभव है?

A new bill promises green cards for TPS holders in the US but the administration will never approve it.

Florida Representative Sheila Cherfilas-McCormick introduced a new bill, the Respect for Essential Workers Act, that would give green cards to people with Temporary Protected Status in the US. This status is for people from war-torn countries or countries affected by natural disasters who cannot remain in their home country and can seek ‘temporary protection’ in the US. The Donald Trump administration has already revoked this status for citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Myanmar, Ethiopia and Yemen. The withdrawal of TPS means that the citizens of these countries will now have to go back to their countries. The U.S. Supreme Court on March 16 temporarily halted the administration’s plan to proceed with the deportation of approximately 6,000 Syrians and 350,000 Haitians who had been granted TPS.TPS holders cannot apply directly for a green card and must qualify for a green card separately. For example, if they are married to a US citizen, if they are sponsored by an employer, etc. Also, it is easier for a TPS holder who enters the country after inspection to qualify for a green card than those who enter the US illegally. The proposed bill states that there should be a set period after which TPS holders who may be classified as essential workers can apply for a green card. “More than 403,000 TPS holders in Florida keep our communities running by working in health care, manufacturing, food supply and other sectors. Protecting essential workers is the right thing to do for our communities, our economy and our future,” the Democrat leader said.

Is it possible?

Given the Donald Trump administration’s tough stance on immigration, both legal and illegal, it is extremely unlikely for the administration to grant any permanency to TPS holders. “TPS was designed to be temporary, and this Administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent. We are prioritizing our national security interests and putting America first,” DHS previously said in explaining why the administration was withdrawing TPS status from several countries.

CBI, ED are showing reluctance in ADAG investigation: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday criticized the apparent reluctance among investigating agencies to move forward against Anil Ambani-led ADAG group of companies accused of siphoning off Rs 40,000 crore from bank loans and directed the CBI and ED to conduct an expeditious and coordinated investigation against the ADAG entities, their directors and officers.A bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi said, “The conduct of the investigating agencies reflects a certain degree of reluctance. The investigation conducted by the investigating agencies should be transparent, fair and speedy so as to inspire confidence not only in the court but also among all the stakeholders and the public.”File new status report of ADAG GRP case in 4 weeks: Supreme Court tells CBI, EDWhen the bench said that although the irregularities in the Anil Ambani-led ADAG Group loan fraud probe had been exposed by SEBI much earlier and the CBI’s August 2025 FIR dealt with a small part of the fraud, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI and ED, assured the court that the court’s views would be personally conveyed to the agencies in a “very strict” manner.SC asked agencies to file new status report in four weeks.Mehta informed the court that the ED has constituted the SIT as per the directions of the Supreme Court and the CBI has so far registered eight separate cases related to alleged misappropriation of around Rs 41,000 crore from bank loans. Mehta said, four top officials of ADAG Group have been arrested so far. He said the CBI is taking the help of financial experts to unravel the complex routing and re-routing of money. He said that ED has written to banks and financial institutions to immediately provide information related to due diligence before sanction of loans and disbursement of loan amount. He said the ED has also requested him to take action against the guilty officials under banking laws and regulations. On his request, the bench directed all financial and other institutions to immediately provide the information required by the investigating agencies. “Apart from the ADAG Group and its officials, action should also be taken against those involved in irregular sanction of loans and playing with public funds,” the bench said. For Anil Ambani, who has already given an undertaking to the court not to leave India without the prior permission of the Supreme Court, senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi said the ADAG Group is ready to discuss with banks and financial institutions to settle the dues, but no one is coming forward due to the pendency of the PIL filed by former bureaucrat EAS Sarma.Mehta said settlement of dues may free ADAG Group from civil liabilities, but there is a need to thoroughly investigate the criminal acts and take them to their logical end. The bench rejected Rohatgi’s request to direct the banks to discuss settlement of dues with ADAG Group. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, for the PIL petitioner, said SEBI had given a detailed report about the financial fraud committed by ADAG group entities and yet the investigating agencies did nothing until the Supreme Court issued them a notice. The plea, filed through advocate Pranab Sachdeva, alleged that ADAG’s three companies – Reliance Communications (RCOM), Reliance Infratel (RITL) and Reliance Telecom (RTL) – cumulatively received loans worth Rs 31,850 crore from a consortium of SBI-led public sector banks between 2013-17.The petitioner said various documents revealed the alleged involvement of ADAG companies in “large scale misappropriation of funds, roundtripping, misuse of external commercial borrowings, fabrication of accounting entries, operation of shell entities and complete disregard of public funds”.

Bill Cosby: Who is Donna Motsinger? Woman awarded $19 million after jury finds Bill Cosby liable in 1972 sexual assault case

Who is Donna Motsinger? Woman awarded $19 million after jury finds Bill Cosby liable in 1972 sexual assault case

A California jury has ordered the veteran comedian bill cosby He has been ordered to pay more than $19 million to a woman who says he drugged and raped her more than five decades ago, in a civil trial that ended Monday in Santa Monica. The jury’s verdict found Cosby liable for sexual assault and battery in a case brought by Donna Motsinger, who says the incident occurred in 1972 while she was working as a waitress in Sausalito, California. The award includes approximately $17.5 million for past mental suffering and $1.75 million for future suffering. Jurors also determined that Cosby acted with “malice, oppression, or fraud”, which could have led to more punitive damages at a later stage.Motsinger, now 80, told the court that she met Cosby when he was a customer at the restaurant where she worked. According to her complaint, Cosby later invited her to a performance and gave her a glass of wine during the ride to the show. She said she began feeling unwell and was given aspirin, which left her faint and weak. The next thing she remembered, she said, was waking up partially naked in her home. But Cosby’s lawyers denied the allegations. She said she did not remember any sexual contact with Motsinger and that if any contact had occurred, it was consensual. He also denied that he gave medicines to Motsingar without his permission. The civil lawsuit began decades after the alleged incident, made possible by changes to California law that extended the time period in which victims could bring sexual assault cases to court. The decision comes as part of a series of legal challenges and lawsuits that Cosby has faced over the years related to sexual misconduct allegations.Cosby, 88, was once one of America’s most successful comedians and a household name with his long-running television show. But his reputation was deeply damaged by numerous allegations of sexual harassment over several decades. In 2018, he was convicted of aggravated indecent assault in Pennsylvania and sentenced to prison, but was released in 2021 after that conviction was overturned by the state Supreme Court due to prosecutorial misconduct. In addition to the Motsinger case, Cosby has also faced other civil judgments. In 2022, another jury in California awarded $500,000 to a different defendant in a case involving allegations dating back to the 1970s.After several hours of deliberations, the Santa Monica jury reached its verdict on Monday and returned an award of $19.25 million. While the current figure includes compensation for Motsinger’s suffering, more punitive damages could be determined in the next phase of the trial after the jury concludes that Cosby acted with malice. The decision marks a big moment in a long legal path for Motsinger, who has sought justice for more than 50 years. The award may provide financial compensation for his suffering, although it does not erase the decades that have passed since the events he describes.Cosby’s legal team has indicated plans to appeal the verdict, meaning the case could continue in the courts for some time before the final outcome is known.

Brain Health Diet: What You Eat at 40 May Determine How Your Brain Will Function Later in Life india news

What you eat at age 40 may determine how your brain works later in life

New Delhi: If you want to remember what you ate for breakfast at 80, now is the time to pay attention to what you ate at 40.A large study published in JAMA Neurology tracking more than 1.5 million adults found that a healthy diet in midlife is linked to better memory and thinking ability later on. Those who ate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish were less likely to report early symptoms of cognitive decline and performed better on cognitive tests over time.

.

The findings shed light on an important but often overlooked window of age, ages 45 to 54, when long-term brain health appears to take shape.Monita Gehlot, dietician, AIIMS Delhi, said this happens when multiple risk factors like high blood pressure, blood sugar imbalance, inflammation and vascular damage start silently and gradually affecting the brain. “Middle life is an important window because the brain still retains enough flexibility for lifestyle changes, especially diet, to have a meaningful impact. Habits formed during this stage help build cognitive reserve and may prevent or reduce the risk of dementia,” he said.Among the diets studied, the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet showed one of the strongest associations with a reduced risk of cognitive decline, reinforcing its benefits beyond heart health. Ritika Samaddar, chief clinical nutritionist, Max Super Specialty Hospital, said diet plays a direct and continuing role in brain health in adulthood. “A plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and healthy fats like olive oil and fish is key. Also, intake of red and processed meat, refined carbs, sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods should be reduced,” she said.He said diet affects the brain in many ways. “A healthy gut microbiome supports cognition and mood, while a poor diet increases inflammation and oxidative stress, which leads to damage to brain cells. Stable blood sugar and good vascular health are equally important for maintaining brain function,” he said.Studies have linked diets high in red and processed meat and diets associated with inflammation or increased blood sugar to worse brain outcomes.Experts say brain aging begins very early, and prevention should begin in mid-life. In a country like India, where dementia cases are expected to rise rapidly, the findings reinforce the importance of prevention.
