On Palm Sunday, Pope Leo XIV made a strong call for peace during Mass at the Vatican, telling worshipers that God does not hear the prayers of those who wage war.Thousands of people gathered in St Peter’s Square for the service marking the beginning of Holy Week leading up to Easter. Palm Sunday commemorates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, when the people welcomed him with palm branches. In his sermon the Pope said that violence cannot be justified on the basis of faith. He described Jesus as the “King of Peace” and said that leaders who shed blood cannot expect their prayers to be heard. “God rejects the prayers of those whose hands are full of blood,” he said, adding that true faith must be reflected in actions, especially when those actions affect innocent people. The Pope also expressed concern for communities suffering due to war and conflict, particularly in the Middle East. He said that many people are not able to celebrate the Holy Week normally due to violence in their areas. The Pope reiterated his call for dialogue and a peaceful solution. He said prayer alone is not enough if it is combined with acts that cause harm. He has previously called for a ceasefire and urged world leaders to prioritize humanitarian needs over conflict.Palm Sunday Mass marks the beginning of the most important week in the Christian calendar. This is followed by Good Friday, which commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus, and Holy Saturday, which is followed by Easter Sunday, which celebrates his resurrection. This year, the Pope’s message focused on the responsibility of the faithful to choose peace and reject violence. He reminded worshipers that faith and war cannot co-exist and encouraged them to support those affected by the conflict. His comments come amid ongoing global tensions and wars, reinforcing the church’s long-standing message that religion should promote peace rather than justify violence.

Top diplomats from major regional powers gathered in Pakistan over the weekend to discuss ways to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, while fighting continued with US-Israeli attacks on Iran and retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Tehran.Pakistan said the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt were participating in the talks in Islamabad. However, neither the United States nor Israel are part of the discussion.Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdellatty and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan arrived on Saturday, while Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived on Sunday at the invitation of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The two-day quadrilateral meeting is part of Pakistan’s effort to pursue a diplomatic solution to the crisis.According to the Pakistani Foreign Office (FO), the participants will hold “in-depth discussions on a range of issues, including efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region” and are also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.Apart from this, Dar also held separate bilateral meetings with his counterparts, Dawn reported. In talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the two sides discussed “advancing regional and international developments” and underlined the importance of dialogue and cooperation.“They underlined the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and collective efforts to promote peace, security and stability in the region,” the FO said. He said the two countries agreed to continue working together to strengthen cooperation and contribute to regional peace.Dar also met Hakan Fidan of Turkey, in which he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expand relations “in all areas of mutual interest” and highlighted the “historic and brotherly relations” between the two countries. In a separate meeting with Egypt’s Badr Abdellatty, both sides reiterated their “commitment to deepen cooperation in a number of areas”.The quadrilateral meeting was initially planned to be held in Turkey, but it was later shifted to Islamabad as Ishaq Dar was unable to travel, as Pakistan was working hard to establish itself as a diplomatic player in efforts to facilitate talks between the United States and Iran, reported Dawn.
In a major development, Dar also announced that Iran has agreed to allow 20 more Pakistan-flagged ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route through which about 20% of the world’s oil flows. He said, “I am happy to share a good news that the Government of Iran has agreed to allow 20 more ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz under Pakistani flag; two ships per day will transit the strait.”“This is a welcome and constructive step by Iran and deserves appreciation. It is a harbinger of peace and will help bring stability to the region,” he said.
Despite diplomatic pressure, there were some signs of success. The United States has sent additional troops to the region, while Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf dismissed the talks as a sham and warned that Tehran was prepared to respond strongly to any ground invasion.Hostilities continued on the ground. Israel reported fresh attacks from Iran, while explosions were heard across Tehran.Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen entered the conflict, firing missiles at what they described as “sensitive Israeli military sites”.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington “can achieve all of our objectives without ground troops,” even as domestic opposition to a broader war is growing.
The top diplomats met in Islamabad just days after the United States offered a 15-point “action list” as a framework for a possible peace deal with Iran. However, Tehran has rejected the proposal and is reportedly working on its own plan, which includes demands such as stopping attacks on Iranian officials, guarantees against future attacks, compensation and recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.Tension increased further after Israeli attacks on Iranian universities. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned that unless security assurances were provided, Israeli and American university campuses in the region could become “legitimate targets”.The Guard said in an official statement, “If the US government wants its universities in the region to be spared, it should condemn the bombing of (Iranian) universities by 12 o’clock on Monday, March 30.”
More than 3,000 people have been killed across the region in the war that began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran.More than 1,900 people have been reported dead in Iran, while at least 19 people have died in Israel. More than 1,100 people have been killed in Israeli action against Hezbollah in Lebanon. 80 security personnel have been killed in Iraq, while 20 have died in the Gulf countries and four in the occupied West Bank.Despite diplomatic efforts, distance remains wide between the US and Iran, with both sides continuing military actions even as negotiations struggle to gain momentum.

head of united nations for office disaster risk Shortage Mami Mizutori says Pradeep Thakur Covax is making progress toward providing 2 billion doses by the end of 2021, which should be enough to protect high-risk and vulnerable people. Excerpts from the interview: world bank It is estimated that 150 million people will fall into extreme poverty due to COVID-19 in 2021. How can India reduce the impact?First of all, I would like to express my sincere condolences to the people and government of India on the tragic loss of lives across the country. All major disasters affecting low- and middle-income countries result in massive economic losses, which have detrimental effects on their ability to eradicate poverty and meet other basic needs, including access to health services and education. In the case of COVID-19, we have seen how it has pushed millions of people into extreme poverty globally, and contributed to rising levels of hunger in many parts of the world, where the informal economy on which poor people depended has been destroyed. For all Member States, poverty eradication cannot be achieved without reducing disaster risks and improving prevention because nothing undermines development like disasters. The US and some other countries have reserved enough shots for their citizens. Should India have done the same?Much of the world looks to India for vaccine supplies, but the pharmaceutical supply chain is very complex and specialized to such an extent that serving a population the size of India has always been a difficult task. India already has a high number of vaccinations but it will take time to produce enough doses to reach more than a billion people. How much success did the United Nations’ Covax program achieve? The COVAX Facility portfolio administered by Gavi currently includes agreements related to eight vaccines, including vaccines in development Serum Institute of India. Coordinated by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Epidemic Preparedness Innovation Coalition and WHO, COVAX is making steady progress towards providing 2 billion doses by the end of 2021, which should be enough to protect high-risk and vulnerable people, as well as frontline health workers. The second wave of Covid-19 in India has led to more deaths. Where did it go wrong?COVID-19 demonstrates the systemic nature of disaster risk, how a biological threat can devastate all spheres of life, from public health to all socio-economic aspects of our society. Unfortunately, many countries, including India, are learning the hard way that containment requires more patience than before and, in the case of biological threats, a longer plan. WHO has warned that when there are large-scale gatherings, more contagious variants emerge and vaccination coverage is still low, it could create a perfect storm for the virus to spread in any country. India has done a commendable job in using technology and communication to ensure effective early warning for prompt action in case of cyclones. The challenge now for the government is to communicate effectively on the continued need for face masks, social distancing and avoiding mass gatherings, as well as roll out an effective vaccination programme.Your view on the ‘global response to future pandemics’ and vaccine distribution? If global preparedness for this pandemic had matched the warnings, the impact could have been reduced to a great extent. An adequate level of pandemic preparedness would cost billions and trillions, not the trillions it is costing now. The loss of life and economic disruption could have been significantly reduced if we had been adequately prepared from the moment biological threats were included in the Sendai Framework in 2015. Given the cross-border nature of biological threats, it is clear that a global response plan is needed for future pandemics. The patchwork response is not working for COVID-19, and it will not work against any new emerging diseases and viruses in the future. It is not acceptable that developing countries have to wait so long for COVID vaccines. This inequality and lack of solidarity to access affordable vaccines only fuels the spread of the virus, allowing the emergence of new variants and prolonging the pandemic. None of us are safe until we are all safe. With Covid disruptions, can countries like India meet UN demands? sustainable development goals Target? It is clear that the number of deaths and economic losses from COVID-19 means that the Sendai Framework’s goals of reducing mortality, the number of people affected by disasters, and economic losses have been dealt a major blow. However, we are still making significant progress on other goals. Asia and the Pacific are not on track to achieve any of the SDGs.
Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag was heavily criticized by fans on social media for taking several digs at Ravichandran Ashwin, who made his commentary debut in the Indian Premier League on JioStar on Saturday, March 29.
What started as banter between Sehwag and Ashwin, with both players trying to pull each other’s leg, soon turned sour after repetition. Instead of analyzing the match, Sehwag started telling personal stories, some of which were targeted at Ashwin.
Fans were particularly unhappy with one incident that has since gone viral. Reportedly, during the match, Sehwag had asked Ashwin to use his brain less while commentating. What initially started as a joke turned into an awkward silence when Sehwag took the matter out of proportion.

The former India off-spinner, known for his wit, did not tolerate this and continued the conversation. Things went a little awry when Sehwag reportedly took another dig at Ashwin and suggested that one should not analyze the game too much on the commentary panel.
Sehwag said, “Today we will not talk through logic or thinking, but from the heart.”
Ashwin reacted immediately.
Ashwin replied, “My parents have always taught me to think before speaking and never say anything without thinking. But you are asking me to do exactly the opposite.”
Sehwag then made a comment that appeared to be a direct dig at Ashwin and his YouTube and Instagram followers over the years.
Sehwag reportedly said, “Some people deliberately think before speaking. They say, ‘This player has more fans.’ If I speak negatively about him, my followers will decrease. If I speak positively, my followers will increase.”
It is pertinent to mention that India Today was not able to verify the exact sequence of events.
Fans reacted strongly to this exchange, with what they saw as a poor level of narrative from Sehwag and other Hindi commentators in the opening game of the season. This comes on the backdrop of criticism from commentators like Navjot Singh Sidhu and Aakash Chopra, who have faced criticism in recent times.
In fact, Chopra had issued a public statement during the World Cup alleging that a targeted hate campaign was launched against him.
This episode once again focused on the balance between entertainment and analysis in live commentary, with viewers expecting sharp insight rather than extended personal banter, especially in a high-profile broadcast like the Indian Premier League.
