Meet Mike Egan: Marine veteran who lost his legs in an explosion completes 110 miles, beating 117 athletes in brutal 27-hour race

Meet Mike Egan: Marine veteran who lost his legs in an explosion completes 110 miles, beating 117 athletes in brutal 27-hour race

US Marine veteran Mike Egan, who lost both his legs in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast while serving in Afghanistan, has received widespread attention for an extraordinary feat of endurance at the Go One More Ultra. Competing in a last-man-standing format, Egan covered more than 110 miles in 27 consecutive hours using a wheelchair, placing among the top 28, besting 117 other participants. The race required athletes to complete a 4.2-mile loop every hour, pushing both physical and mental limits. At one point, when his wheelchair got stuck in the mud, Egan was seen pulling himself forward to walk forward, a moment that has since been widely echoed as a symbol of resilience.Go One More Ultra is structured to test endurance in its purest form. Participants must complete a 4.2-mile loop at the beginning of each hour, with only time left for rest before the start of the next loop. There is no definite finish line; The race continues until only one contestant remains. This format creates cumulative fatigue, forcing athletes to manage long periods of speed, recovery, and sleep deprivation. For Egan, completing 27 consecutive loops meant continuing the effort for more than an entire day with minimal recovery time.

Mike Egan’s journey from blast injury to 110-mile endurance feat

Egan’s journey into endurance sports began in 2012 after suffering a life-changing injury. While deployed to Afghanistan, he was seriously injured in an IED blast, resulting in the loss of both legs and numerous other injuries. He underwent more than 40 surgeries during a long and complex recovery process before being medically retired in 2014. Rehabilitation required rebuilding strength, mobility and independence, laying the foundation for her subsequent transition into competitive fitness and endurance challenges. After recovering, Egan became involved in adaptive sports, particularly CrossFit and endurance training. He developed the upper body strength and stamina needed to compete in physically demanding competitions using a wheelchair. His training focused not only on physical conditioning but also mental flexibility, a quality that would prove essential in long-term competitions. Over time, he established himself within the adaptive athletics community as an athlete willing to take on extreme challenges. Before the Go One More Ultra, Egan had already accomplished a major feat. In November 2025, he set a Guinness World Record by traveling 152.37 miles in a wheelchair in a 24-hour period. That performance demonstrated his ability to maintain a high level of output over extended periods and ranked him among elite endurance athletes. His latest performance reinforces that ability in even more unpredictable race conditions.

The moment that defined the race

During the ultra race, the challenging terrain added another layer of difficulty. In the muddy conditions, Egan’s wheelchair became stuck, threatening to end his race. Instead of retreating, he got up from the chair and moved forward, dragging himself on the ground to complete the loop within the required time. This moment captured the essence of the demands of the race and highlighted the level of determination required to continue in the face of adversity.

Egan’s performance is remarkable not only for the distance covered but also for the circumstances under which it was achieved. Competing in a non-adaptive race format, he faced the same structure and time constraints as all other participants while managing additional physical challenges. The combination of sustained effort, limited recovery and environmental obstacles underscores the level of stamina required to complete 110 miles in 27 hours.Responses to Egan’s achievement focused on themes of perseverance and resilience. His journey from war injury to endurance competition reflects a broader story of recovery and adaptation. As more people connect with his story, it continues to highlight the possibilities within adaptive sports and the ability of individuals to move beyond traditional boundaries.

Aerial footage broadcast by CBS Los Angeles shows the deputy crouching behind an armored vehicle, just feet away from the suspect, swiping through profiles on his phone. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is investigating the incident. “This behavior does not reflect the standards, expectations or policies of our department,” the sheriff’s office said.It added: “We have launched an internal investigation and will take appropriate action based on the findings. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to professionalism and holding our employees accountable.”The standoff began after a lengthy chase involving a white Cadillac car. China’s ‘imaginary names’ mischievous, India says. india news

India says China's 'fictitious names' are mischievous

New Delhi: In yet another exercise by China to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh, India has categorically rejected “any mischievous attempt by the Chinese side to give fictitious names to places forming part of the territory of India”. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that such actions affect the ongoing efforts to stabilize and normalize India-China relations. The government further said that China should avoid steps that bring negativity in relations. Beijing has given Chinese names to 23 places in Arunachal, the sixth exercise in the last 10 years to consolidate its claim over the Indian state of Zangnan. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Such efforts by China to make false claims and create baseless narratives cannot change the indisputable reality that these places and territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, were, are and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India.” India’s reaction comes after reports from Beijing that China has established a new county in its Xinjiang province, apparently to boost security along the narrow Wakhan Corridor to prevent infiltration of Uyghur separatist militants. The county, named Senling, is located near the Karakoram mountain range and close to the borders of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Afghanistan, underscoring its strategic importance, a PTI report said. It is the third new county established by China in Xinjiang, the Muslim-majority Uyghur region, in more than a year. India had last year lodged a protest with China over the creation of Hein and Hekang counties, saying parts of their jurisdiction fall in Ladakh. China has renamed places in Arunachal Pradesh five times in the past – in 2017, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. On the previous occasion – in 2025 – India had described the practice as absurd and said that creative naming would not change the indisputable reality that Arunachal Pradesh remains an integral and inseparable part of India. China claims not just Tawang in Arunachal but the entire state and says it is part of South Tibet, while the Tibetan government-in-exile believes that Arunachal Pradesh is part of India. China cites examples such as the location of the second most important Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Tawang and the birth of the sixth Dalai Lama to support its claim.

Flow disrupted: Lifeline of 1.5 crore people facing drought. Lucknow news

Lucknow: Gomti, the lifeline of 1.5 crore people and home to over 200 species of flora and fauna, is gradually drying up due to multiple reasons, mostly human activity and some natural factors, a recent field survey conducted by a team of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has revealed. The survey covered the origin of the river in Pilibhit and the districts through which it flows, such as Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and Hardoi. In Pilibhit, an area of about 15 km near the source was found dry due to very low water at the source (Phulhar Lake) and disruption in natural flow. The river flow was also slow in Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur. The river was found to be shallow and narrow in many stretches, leading to the spread of invasive plants such as water hyacinth. Congress grass was also found in abundance on some beaches, disrupting natural vegetation growth. These conditions were observed at several locations, including Fulhar Lake (Madhotanda, Pilibhit), Triveni Ghat (Ghatampur), Panna Ghat (Shahjahanpur), Imalia Ghat (Lakhimpur Kheri) and stretches of Sitapur and Hardoi, where low flows and eroded banks have allowed invasive species to spread. In these areas, encroachment was recorded through deforestation of natural vegetation, unprotected wetlands and farming and construction on both banks, further weakening the river system. The survey also found that many tributaries of Gomti are under stress. The Katna stream in Pipariya Bhaja (Pilibhit) has become seasonal and remains almost dry or stagnant during non-monsoon months, while the Bhainsi river in Shahjahanpur often dries up in summer.Due to encroachment and sand mining in the Durga River near Sukatiya (Pilibhit-Lakhimpur Kheri section) the depth has reduced and the flow is slow. Similarly, the flow of the Behta River in Hardoi has weakened due to land leveling for farming, which suggests that many tributaries either carry very little water or face periodic drying up.The survey also revealed that excessive groundwater absorption near the river has caused irreversible damage to the baseflow, resulting in water depletion in the river. There is a possibility of increase especially at the Sharda Canal bifurcation point at Puranpur (Madhotanda, Pilibhit) and through Devipur Minor near Phulhar Lake. However, during periods of low flow this water does not return adequately, leading to reduced flows in Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and Hardoi.pollution The level was found high at many places along the banks of Gomti. At Triveni Ghat (Ghatampur, Pilibhit) and Panna Ghat (Shahjahanpur), the river has been polluted due to dumping of ritual waste, flowers, clothes and plastic associated with religious activities. At Imalia Ghat (Lakhimpur Kheri), picnic and recreational waste, especially thermocol plates and single-use plastics, were observed along the banks. In Sitapur, the Sarayan River near Hargaon – a major tributary – is polluted by untreated waste water and agricultural runoff from about 40 drains as well as effluent from a sugar mill, leading to algae growth. In Hardoi, faecal pollution due to open defecation was observed in Sai river in Bhajehata. In many parts of Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and Hardoi, household waste and plastic waste were also found along the river banks, mainly due to poor waste management and low water flow, which reduces the natural ability of the river to clean itself.“Human behaviour, lack of coordination among officials and administrative negligence have contributed to Gomti’s current condition,” said Professor Venkatesh Dutta, head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, who led the survey. He said the river can still be revived by ensuring minimum flow at the source of Phulhar Lake. Researchers Rakesh Singh Kushwaha and Ankit Kumar said at least 20 cusecs of water should be supplied from the Sharda canal system to maintain the downstream flow. The team emphasized protection of wetlands and natural drainage channels, removal of encroachments and protection of river banks to aid recovery. Professor Dutta said low-cost, nature-based solutions could improve the flow.“Gomti’s status can be changed, but only if timely and coordinated action is taken,” said researchers Komal Loshali, Pragati Sharma and Ayushma Yadav.

Nikki Haley says US would ‘probably’ need to use special forces to get uranium from Iran, as she rules out 2028 race

Nikki Haley says US would 'probably' need to use special forces to get uranium from Iran, as she rules out 2028 race

Former Republican presidential candidate nikki haley Said the United States would “probably” deploy special forces to secure Iran’s uranium stockpile.Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Haley said, “That’s probably what will happen. I mean, it’s a Special Forces mission. It will take about a week to ten days to complete. They know how to do it. This is dangerous.”He said that this operation will be important in weakening Iran’s capabilities. “It’s not something we can do, you know, just sit and think it’s accidental. I think they have to do it. But once they do that, they’re literally taking away an arm of the Iranian regime where they can no longer threaten any of our allies.”His comments come as Donald Trump is considering options to deal with Iran’s nuclear program. The US has already attacked Iranian nuclear facilities using bunker-buster bombs, knocking uranium reserves underground, the New York Post reports. Instead, the president has warned Tehran that American satellites are closely monitoring its nuclear sites and that any attempt to recover the stockpile could trigger further attacks.Tension remains in the area. Iranian state media has reported the deployment of naval special forces to the southern coast amid fears of possible US action. Additionally, thousands of additional US troops have been sent to the Middle East to reinforce existing forces.Trump has also kept the possibility of ground operation open. “I have no reservations about boots on the ground,” he said in a recent interview.Efforts to calm the situation have so far failed. Talks began in Islamabad, Pakistan, but talks broke down due to a two-week ceasefire announced by Trump. US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that “we have not reached any agreement,” after which US officials backed down. Trump has since announced plans to impose a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.Despite supporting Trump’s approach toward Iran, Haley made it clear that she had no plans to run for president again. Asked about a possible bid in 2028, she said, “I wouldn’t.”However, some lawmakers have raised concerns about the risks involved in any special forces mission. US senatorMark Warner warned that recovering the uranium would be extremely complex. “These are canisters, 1,000 pounds, very volatile, this will be no ordinary operation. It will take 10,000 troops on the ground to defend the perimeter,” he said.He also warned that Iranian forces could retaliate in ways that could endanger US troops and further complicate the mission.
