Parties woo women voters with promises of cash transfers

To woo women voters in Assam, the BJP and Congress have competed in cash-transfers. In Assam, the BJP resolution paper promised to increase the monthly direct bank transfer to Rs 3,000 under the Orunodoi scheme for women and target 40 lakh “Lakhpati Baido”, a major initiative to empower women economically. Congress in its manifesto for Assam has promised unconditional bank transfer of a specified amount to the account of every woman and Rs 50,000 for women entrepreneurs. At the national level, the Narendra Modi government has already moved towards implementing women quota in legislatures from the 2029 general elections. While the overall voting percentage in Assam and Puducherry touched an all-time high (85.9% and 89.9% respectively), male voter turnout in these two states was also the highest ever. However, the male turnout of 75.2% in Kerala was significantly lower than the all-time high of 80.5% recorded in the 1987 assembly elections in the state. Widespread participation of women voters in these States/UTs is not a new phenomenon. In Puducherry, participation of women has been higher than that of men in 18 of the total 30 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections held since 1964. In Kerala, women’s participation has been high in nine of the 34 parliamentary/assembly elections held in the state since 1957. For the first time in Assam, women voting had overtaken men during the 2016 assembly elections. Since then, women voters have shown better participation than their male counterparts, except in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when female and male turnout was exactly equal. This means that four out of 33 Lok Sabha/Assembly elections in the north-eastern state saw higher female voting percentage.

Shehzad Khan recalls Raveena Tandon-Karisma Kapoor's rivalry on Andaz Apna Apna sets: 'We felt a little distance during the climax'
The making of Andaz Apna Apna has long been linked to stories of tension between co-stars Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor. Reports over the years suggest that the two actors barely spoke during the shooting of the film due to an intense rivalry, often ignoring each other and even nitpicking at each other’s costumes. However, veteran actor Ajit’s son Shehzad Khan, who played Bhalla in the cult comedy, says his personal experience was much less dramatic.

The making of Andaz Apna Apna has long been linked to stories of tension between the co-stars Raveena Tandon And Karishma Kapoor. Reports over the years suggest that the two actors barely spoke during the shooting of the film due to an intense rivalry, often ignoring each other and even nitpicking at each other’s costumes. It is also widely said that the director Rajkumar Santoshi Extreme measures were once resorted to to reduce tensions – such as making them sit together. Today, that phase is often remembered as youthful “class politics”.However, veteran actor Ajit’s son Shehzad Khan, who played Bhalla in the cult comedy, says his personal experience was much less dramatic. In a recent interview with Vicky Lalwani he said, “I never really had to deal with their fights. They both were always very good to me.”“In fact, there was a very warm, family-like atmosphere – sometimes there was even biryani Salman Khan’s house.”He further added, “During the climax we only felt a little distance, maybe they weren’t talking much. But I stayed away from all this. My focus was on my work. As a newcomer, you are nervous and cautious anyway.”

‘I kept knocking on doors’

Opening up about his early days, Shehzad said that perseverance defined his journey. “After that, I kept knocking on doors,” he shared, adding that he worked in films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Purani Haveli.“I also worked with Amjad Khan, which was a great learning experience,” he said.

‘I thought it was just another promise’

Recalling how he got Andaz Apna Apna, Shehzad said, “Vinay Sinha once told me, ‘I will cast you in my next film.’ I thought it was just another ‘next movie’ promise! But things changed rapidly. “One day, I saw a newspaper advertisement – Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena, Karisma – but of course, my name was not in it.”“At that very moment, I got a call and I was asked to come to Sunny Super Sound immediately. “I realized something was happening.”

‘Prince Santoshi insisted on me’

Shahzad credited Prince Santoshi for supporting him. “He told me, ‘I have cast everyone, but for one character – Bhalla – I insisted on you,'” he recalled. However there was a catch. “He said, ‘You have to use your father Ajit’s voice and style.’ I was nervous… but I agreed. And thus the journey began.”This decision did not go down well at home. Shehzad revealed, “Yes, he was upset. He told me, ‘Next time, don’t you dare do it again.’

‘People were looking for it in me’

Despite warnings he continued. He said, “What could I do? People appreciated it. After all, we are entertainers – we are here to entertain the audience.”Clarifying his stance, he said, “I told him that people liked it. Besides, he had stopped working at that time. So I said, ‘If you are not working, people are looking for you in me.'”“He had left the job at his peak, so naturally there was a void – people still wanted Ajit in some form or the other.”Looking back, Shehzad believes that everything worked out well in the end. “Other people also started bringing that essence back in their own way. Everyone found their place – I continued to do my thing, and others did theirs,” he concluded.

World’s oldest computer revealed: A YouTuber’s data gives scientists new insight into 2,000 years of computing history

World's oldest computer revealed: A YouTuber's data gives scientists new insight into 2,000 years of computing history

The Antikythera Mechanism has been described as the world’s first analog computer since it was found in a shipwreck off the coast of Greece in 1901, but until now, we don’t know exactly how it was configured inside. The Anticythera Mechanism – a fragmentary chronographic artifact discovered in a Roman shipwreck in 1901, has been called the world’s first analog machine since the day of its discovery. However, its internal dynamics have remained mysterious for the last 2000 years. One of the first major pieces of research with the new method was conducted by scientists at the University of Glasgow using experimental archeology in conjunction with the findings of Chris Budiselic (Clickspring)’s experimentally constructed Antica Tyrrhenia mechanism. The data were incorporated into the full analysis using Bayesian statistics (first developed to detect gravitational waves). The end result of this interdisciplinary research confirmed that this device was constructed and calibrated to track the lunar calendar and can give us a glimpse of how ahead of their time the ancient Greek craftsmen were and how advanced they were at the same point in history compared to today’s modern digital computers.

Chris Budiselic helps scientists solve the mystery of world’s oldest computer

According to the University of Glasgow, YouTuber Chris Budiselic, creator of the YouTube channel ‘Clickspring’, can be credited with initiating a breakthrough that arose from his years of documenting efforts to create a true-to-history replica of the Antikythera Mechanism. This process allowed them to provide researchers Graham Vaughan and Joseph Bayley with important physical data, aiding the use of modern statistical models to analyze ancient pieces of the mechanism. His applied experimental archeology provided researchers with baseline data that traditional observational methods have been unable to obtain for more than 100 years.

How scientists mapped a 2,000-year-old ring

Glasgow researchers used Bayesian analysis to determine that the mechanism’s calendar ring had either 354 or 355 holes, as written in The Horological Journal. This method is a statistical analytical method commonly used to analyze gravitational wave signals in space by removing background noise. Their use of this method along with data provided by ClickSpring Replication showed that the calendar was created to follow the Greek lunar calendar, which had 354 days (hereafter an intercalary day). Therefore, it was not a representation of the solar 365-day calendar.

Why was 2,000-year-old computing ahead of its time?

According to this research, the holes in the ring were arranged with a radius of about 77.1 millimeters with a radial variation of only 0.028 millimeters, which indicates that the ancient Greeks were probably able to apply very sophisticated segmentation machinery or geometric techniques. These results prove that technological advancements were far more advanced than previously thought, and mechanical computing was significantly more advanced than it was 2,000 years ago.

How the ancient Greeks mechanically coded in bronze with this device

Originally discovered in 1901 off the coast of the island of Antikythera, Greece, the device was built around 60–70 BC, and is now considered the earliest remaining example of analog computing in the world. The Antikythera Mechanism functions as an astronomical calculator, mechanically encoding the solar eclipses and epicyclic motions of the five known planets through carefully calibrated gear tooth geometry.

Share burden of war costs: Government tells India Inc

New Delhi: “When things are going good you keep all the profits in your account, but when things turn unfavourable, you immediately pass on the costs. A little sharing of the burden may not be bad for you” – the reported remarks of a senior government official have created a stir in government circles. The official is said to have made this comment during a recent conversation with some industry representatives, who told him about the rising cost of raw materials due to the conflict in West Asia. Sympathizing with them and assuring them of all possible assistance from the government, the official suggested that the industry could bear some part of the increase in material costs instead of passing it on to consumers. The ministry and department – after receiving inputs from industries on short supply or non-availability of key materials – are taking up the matter with concerned agencies and “higher levels” to find solutions. The government has set up seven Empowered Groups of Secretaries (EGoS) that regularly examine potential disruptions in trade, supply chains and logistics. They are also taking mitigation measures and monitoring domestic availability and price stability of essential commodities. Meanwhile, officials said that during a meeting at the PMO on Wednesday evening, EGOS members also shared the steps taken so far and the problems being faced. These were discussed in detail, he said. One of the major issues under discussion was the availability of packaging material for food items, milk and medicines, which was affected due to the disruption in the supply of ethylene and propylene.

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule: A light that still shows the way to India. india news

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule: A light that still shows the way to India

Today, April 11, is a very special day for all of us. It is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, one of India’s greatest social reformers and a mentor for generations. This year, the occasion is even more significant, as it marks the beginning of his 200th birth anniversary celebrations. Mahatma Phule was a great reformer. Furthermore, his life was one of moral courage, restless inquiry and unwavering commitment to social good. Mahatma Phule is remembered for the institutions he created and the movements he led. At the same time, his contribution to our civilizational journey lies in the hope he inspired, the confidence he instilled and the ideas that continue to give strength to millions of people across the country. Born in 1827 in the great state of Maharashtra, Mahatma Phule rose from humble beginnings. But his early difficulties never came in the way of his education, his courage or his commitment to society. This is a trait that has always stayed with him: no matter what the challenges are, one must work hard, gain knowledge and mitigate those challenges rather than doing nothing about it. Right from his school days, young Jyotirao had a highly inquisitive nature and became an avid reader, often reading far more books than was expected of children of his age. Years later, he said, “The more questions we pose, the more knowledge comes out of them.” Obviously, the spirit of exploration that he had since childhood remained constant in his journey. Throughout his life, learning and education became central to Mahatma Phule’s mission. He recognized with rare clarity that knowledge is not a privilege to be protected, but the power to share. At a time when many were deprived of the joy of learning, she opened pioneering schools for girls and those deprived of formal education. He used to say, “Whatever improvement comes in children through the mother is very valuable.” Therefore, if schools are to be opened, they should first be opened for girls.” She worked to create a new social imagination in which the classroom became an instrument of justice and equality. His approach towards education inspires us a lot. Over the last decade, we have worked to make research and innovation the cornerstone of India’s youth. Efforts are being made to create an ecosystem where young minds are encouraged to question, explore and innovate. By investing in knowledge, skills and opportunity, India is empowering its youth to become problem-solvers and drivers of national progress. Due to his knowledge and intelligence, Mahatma Phule developed a strong understanding of areas such as agriculture, health care and rural development. He often used to say that injustice towards our farmers and workers weakens our society. He saw how social inequalities manifested in daily life, whether in the fields or villages. Therefore, he threw himself into ensuring dignity for the poor, the downtrodden and the marginalized. At the same time, he made every possible effort to maintain social harmony. Mahatma Phule said, “True freedom cannot be achieved unless equal rights are given to everyone in the society.” And to do this, they created institutions that implemented this vision and contributed to a just society. The Satyashodhak Samaj founded by him was one of the most important social reform movements in modern India. It was at the forefront of social reform, community service and advancing human dignity. It became an effective voice for women, youth and people living in villages. This movement reflects Mahatma Phule’s inner belief that society can be strengthened by keeping justice, respect for every individual and the spirit of collective progress at its core. His personal life also teaches courage. Always working and being among people took a toll on his health. But even the most serious health challenges did not diminish his resolve. After suffering a debilitating stroke, he continued to work and fulfill his dream. Yes, his body was tested, but his commitment to society was not successful. For millions of people today, especially those who gain courage from struggle, it is one of the most powerful aspects of their lives. No memory of Mahatma Phule can be complete without a respectful mention of Savitribai Phule, who was herself one of the greatest reformers of our country. As one of India’s pioneering women teachers, she played a pivotal role in advancing girls’ education, giving them the opportunity to pursue their dreams. After the demise of Mahatma Phule, Savitribai carried that torch forward and in 1897, during the plague outbreak, she served the victims with such devotion that she herself contracted the disease and lost her life. Our land has been blessed time and again by great men and women who have strengthened society through thought, sacrifice and work. He did not wait for change to come from somewhere else. They became its source. For hundreds of years in our land, calls for social betterment have often arisen from within society itself, from those who could see suffering clearly and refused to accept it as fate. Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was one such voice. I remember my visit to Pune in 2022, when I paid homage to Mahatma Phule at the grand statue of him in the city. As we mark the beginning of his bicentenary year, the most fitting tribute to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule is about renewal. Renewing our commitment to issues close to their hearts like education. Renewing our sensitivity to injustice. Renewing our belief that society can reform itself from within. His life tells us that the power of community when combined with moral clarity and public purpose can do wonders in India. This is the reason why he gives strength to millions of people even today. This is why his words and actions inspire hope even today. And that is why, almost two hundred years after his birth, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule remains not a figure of the past, but a guide for India’s future. (The author is the Prime Minister of India)

4,430 OPT in Missouri alone; Janitor Service Training: US Senator reveals ‘Visa Abuse’ facts

केवल मिसौरी में 4,430 ओपीटी; चौकीदारी सेवा प्रशिक्षण: अमेरिकी सीनेटर ने 'वीज़ा दुरुपयोग' तथ्यों का खुलासा किया

Missouri Senator Eric Schmidt said OPT students are working in restaurants, janitorial service companies.

Senator Eric Schmidt, who has been speaking out against the optional practical training program that foreign students receive at the end of their courses, just revealed some surprising facts from his state of Missouri as he once again demanded that the practice be ended as it is harming American students. This OPT has provided a legal pathway from colleges to chambers for centuries, and students on F1 visas can easily get their status changed to H-1B once they get on the right track. Missouri Senator Eric Schmidt said that ICE has given him the figure that there are 4430 OPT visas in Missouri alone and many of them are working in jobs they should not be working in. The senator said a local Ethiopian restaurant applied for a STEM OPT employee, another OPT employee works for a janitorial services company. “OPT jobs *must* be directly related to the student’s major field of study. And if you’re a STEM major, you get *3 years of work authorization.* Not only that, OPT holders are exempt from FICA taxes – a >15% tax subsidy for employers. Given this, and given that foreigners using the OPT may be desperate for work, it should be no surprise that the OPT is often Abuse is rampant. I found cases of foreign students working in restaurants, bars and as janitors providing services that have no connection to a student’s field of study,” Schmidt said. “Employers who clearly need, degree-related, high skills include: A local Ethiopian restaurant, which applied for a STEM OPT employee last year (three years long). It’s a highly reviewed restaurant but why does it need a recent graduate STEM major? And why not hire an American?”“Another OPT employee works for a small janitorial services company. This doesn’t seem like a natural fit. OPT often cuts white collar work, but it is also cutting blue collar workers by flooding the market with recent graduates looking for any type of employment.”“Not only that, but a cadre of shady consultants and vigilante NGOs are taking advantage of the OPT, teaching foreign students how to game the system. And some are even using foreign student labor to train the import of more foreign students and workers,” the senator said, citing the example of Vitendo4Africa, which offers classes on green card applications. “The bottom line: OPT is not a student training program. It is a backdoor job program for foreign nationals at the expense of Missouri families and American graduates who are still struggling to find work. USCIS, it’s time to shut it down. Missourians first. Americans first,” the senator wrote.
