New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party The Chief Minister on Thursday announced his list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections Himanta Biswa Sarma Ready to contest elections from his traditional Jalukbari seat.The name of the candidate from Sisiborgaon constituency has been withheld.
Under the new seat-sharing arrangement, BJP will contest on 89 seats, AGP on 26 seats and BPF on 11 seats in the 126-member assembly. Among the prominent candidates, Pradyut Bordoloi, who a few days ago quit Congress as Lok Sabha MP and joined the BJP, has been fielded from Dispur assembly constituency.Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary will contest from Tamulpur (ST) seat, while Bhupen Bora, another leader who switched to BJP from Congress, has been made the candidate from Bihpuria. Bora also served as Congress Assam chief. The list includes several prominent names and signals a mix of continuity and change, with the party removing 11 sitting MLAs and fielding only five women candidates.This announcement comes after the Election Commission announced the election schedule last week. Voting for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be held in a single phase on April 9 and counting of votes will take place on May 4.With the BJP trying to retain power in the state, Sarma is aiming for another term as chief minister. In the 2021 elections, the National Democratic Alliance, comprising the BJP, Assam Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal, won 75 seats, while the BJP won 60 seats.With an eye on strengthening the NDA ahead of the elections, the BJP on Tuesday brought back the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) into its fold after five years and shared seats with the AGP, while its current ally in the government, the Bodoland-based United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), had already quit the NDA citing ideological differences. The opposition Congress has already announced candidates for 65 constituencies as part of its alliance strategy, with state chief and deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi leading the campaign.
