Near-Earth objects range in size from tiny specks of cosmic dust to giant asteroids, but very few objects pose a threat to our planet.The minimum approach distance of 156,000 miles for the asteroid falls within the Moon’s average orbital radius of approximately 239,000 miles. Therefore it will be considered to pass between the orbits of the Earth and the Moon. Although the distance between the two bodies seems relatively small in comparison, the difference between them is still quite large.
Is asteroid 2026 GD a threat to Earth during its close flyby?

The carcasses of the vultures, classified under the Wildlife Protection Act as a protected species and critically endangered species of birds, were recovered on Tuesday.Kirti Chaudhary, Deputy Director of Dudhwa Buffer Zone, said that 25 vultures (mostly believed to be of Himalayan Griffin species) were found dead in an agricultural area of Semrai village under Dudhwa Buffer Zone.He said five other vultures were found unconscious in the field and were provided immediate treatment before being released after being found fit to fly.Choudhary told PTI that dead bodies of some dogs were also recovered at some distance from the same field. He said that it is suspected that the vultures died by eating those dead bodies.He said a panel of veterinarians comprising Dr Daya Shankar, Dr Ankur and Dr Rajendra Singh of Dudhwa conducted the postmortem of 23 dead vultures, while the bodies of two of them were sent to IVRI, Bareilly, along with the viscera of the 23 vultures for further examination and analysis as per the instructions of DTR Area Director and Chief Conservator of Forests Dr H Rajamohan.However, the postmortem failed to indicate the exact nature of the poison found in the carcasses, although it was found that the vultures died after eating the remains of dog carcasses recovered from the same location.Postmortem panel member Dr. Daya Shankar told PTI that the postmortem has prima facie revealed that there was some poisonous substance in the dead bodies of the dogs.
