Beef row: Chief Minister promises action against relatives of AJP candidate. india news
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday raised the issue of beef consumption in his election campaign against Congress’ key ally Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate from Guwahati Central seat, Kunki Chaudhary (27), who accused her parents of eating beef and uploading its picture on social media.Sarma told reporters, “Kunki’s mother Sujata Gurung Chaudhary had shared a post related to eating beef and made comments that hurt the sentiments of ‘Sanatani’ people… After the elections, I will take action against Kunki’s parents under the Cattle Prevention Act. I will accept everything, but not eating beef.” Kunqi denied the allegations and described them as “false and baseless”.Sarma said, “Forget whether Kunki wins or loses… let him say that his parents eat beef, he is a Sanatani Hindu and he has disowned them. If she says she is not with her parents, I am with her.”“There are Satradhikaris (heads of satra bodies) in Assam. There is Kamakhya temple. Which satradhikar will vote for them?… Will we eat beef in front of Kamakhya, Majuli and Batadrava? AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi should apologise,” he said.Sarma claimed that members of the “Miya” community have also stopped eating beef on his request and now eat buffalo meat instead. Eating beef is not illegal in Assam. However, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, bans cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains and Sikhs are in majority, and within five kilometers of religious places.
