BJP releases list of 88 candidates for Assam elections; Pradyut Bordoloi will contest elections from Dispur

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday released its first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections to be held on April 9, 2026. The party has withdrawn one name for Sisiborgaon constituency.The biggest highlight of the announcement is the inclusion of former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the BJP on Wednesday. Bordoloi has been fielded from the high-profile Dispur constituency, marking a high-visibility contest in the state capital.

Apart from Bordoloi, another former Congress leader, former PCC chief Bhupen Kumar Bora, has also been fielded in Bihpuri. He had joined BJP only a few weeks ago.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest again from Jalukbari, a seat he has held since 2001. As per the seat sharing within the NDA alliance, the BJP will contest on 89 seats, while its allies Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will contest on 26 and 11 seats respectively. BJP clarified that UPPL is no longer part of the alliance, although it will contest 15 seats independently. The 126-member Assam Assembly will go to polls in a single phase on April 9 and the counting of votes will take place on May 4.
