Anand said, “When we were playing Under-17, we played two seasons – Virat scored a double century and a couple of centuries in the last season. Virat was a well-known name in the Delhi circuit. He was always excellent. Now, when it came to the next season, there was a particular coach who was not in favor of Virat, so he was trying to pull him down in his own way despite that kind of record.”But if anything, the adversity has only emboldened Kohli more. Recalling a high-pressure match against Punjab in Patiala, Anand shed light on the mindset of the young batsman. He said, “Virat has always been the kind of player who, if you challenge him, he will like it.”Before the match, Kohli made his intentions clear in the team conversation. “He said, ‘I will beat these guys badly in my proper Delhi language,'” Anand revealed. What followed was a brilliant performance – Kohli hitting a double century against fast bowler Siddharth Kaul against a strong Punjab attack.This innings was part of a remarkable run. Kohli scored another double century along with three more centuries that season, leading Delhi to the Vijay Merchant Trophy title. Anand said, “So, you see, that kind of challenge. Imagine the coach having authority in that age group, but still he could not stop a player like Virat.”That stellar form paved the way for Kohli’s rapid rise to prominence, including making his List A debut soon after and leading India to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2008.
