Dibrugarh: Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma Making an important announcement at an election rally in Nazira under Sivasagar district on Saturday, she said the total number of assembly seats in Assam may increase by 63 in future due to the implementation of women’s reservation – potentially increasing it to 189 from the current 126 seats.Addressing a large gathering in support of BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain, who is in a high-profile contest against sitting Congress MLA and leader of opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, the CM used the occasion to make a categorical promise regarding the abolished Amguri assembly constituency.“There is a possibility that 63 more seats will be added to the existing 126 Assam Assembly seats due to women reservation. And when that happens, we will again try to revive the abolished Amguri assembly seat,” Sarma announced before the crowd.Amguri constituency was dissolved after delimitation, with one part merged into Sivasagar and the other into Nazira. The Chief Minister sought to reassure residents by acknowledging their emotional connect with their former constituency. He said, “After delimitation, a part of Amguri constituency went to Sivasagar and a part went to Nazira. The people of Amguri want their constituency to remain. But until we revive it, no government office will be shifted from Amguri. Everything will remain as it is. If possible, we will set up one or two more offices in Amguri.”Turning to the electoral battle, Sarma made a strong pitch for Mayur Borgohain, urging voters to support the BJP candidate and build on the momentum of the party’s governance record in the state. He highlighted the achievements of the BJP government in Assam and stressed the advantages of a double engine government with a single party at both the state and central levels in driving development.Sarma said, “The double engine government has brought roads, welfare schemes and transformation across Assam. Voting for Mayur Borgohain means voting to continue this progress in Nazira.”The Nazira contest is being seen as one of the most politically significant battles of the current election cycle, pitting the BJP candidate directly against one of the most prominent faces of the Congress in the state assembly. With the Chief Minister personally campaigning on the ground, the BJP is clearly leaving no stone unturned in the coveted seat.
