Cricket, hockey are back in focus as India plans 2030 Commonwealth Games. cricket news
New Delhi: According to Commonwealth Sports President Donald Rookere, the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India will feature around 17 sports disciplines. Speaking here on Friday, Rukare said the final roster of events would be confirmed by mid-2027. “We should soon be able to announce a full board of about 16 to 17 sporting events that will be on display here in 2030. By the end of the first half of 2027, we should be able to give you a definite answer in terms of sports and where we start from. And this will also be carried forward for future Commonwealth Games,” Rukare told a media gathering. The main attraction is the possible inclusion of topics not covered in previous editions but having strong sentimental value for India. Organizers aim to field a full roster for Ahmedabad, which was dropped from Birmingham 2022 and will not feature in the Glasgow edition later this year. In 2022, shooting and archery were removed, while nine major sports including badminton, cricket, hockey, shooting, squash, table tennis and wrestling have been removed from Glasgow.Among the disciplines likely to be cut are men’s and women’s cricket and hockey in the T20 format, two of the three “core team sports” under consideration, given their popularity and commercial viability. Yogasana is also being introduced as a medal event in the traditional sports category.
Rukare said, “The potential for India to host a wider range of sports is clear. Once we have completed all the necessary consultations with the IOA, international federations and host organizers and given what is available, we are going to create a very vibrant, responsive program that caters not only for a very important constituency in India, but also for our 74 regions.”
