England cricket selection controversy erupts: ECB reacts to Liam Livingstone’s ‘no one cares’ claim ‘people will be upset’ cricket news
England Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key has reacted to the all-rounder’s comments. liam livingstoneThat said, the player remains a contender for selection despite recent criticism from the team management.Livingstone, who has not played international cricket since England’s winless campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy under former captain Jos Buttler, told ESPN Cricinfo that the management, including Key and the head coach Brendon McCullumDidn’t show enough concern for the players once they were sent off. He also said Key had not negotiated with him before his central contract expired, claiming he was told there were “100 more important things to do”.
Responding to England’s Ashes review following their 1-4 defeat in Australia, Key said: “Look, I’m not going to get into personal conversations. Obviously, there’s another side to that conversation as I saw it. It was quite an intriguing phone call to say the least from what I said to Liam. [was that] “I don’t see any way that a player of Liam Livingstone’s caliber would not be up for selection for England.”Key said Livingstone had been discussed for a comeback during the limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup and he would remain in the mix provided he performs well.Speaking to Sky Sports, he said, “We discussed him for the Sri Lanka series. Liam Livingstone is a player we would love to see at his best, scoring runs and then back into the England set-up.”He also noted that Livingstone was once considered for leadership responsibilities. “We thought as much about him [as] To make him captain at a stage when we don’t have all the senior players there,” Key said, referring to the ODI series against West Indies in late 2024.“We thought so much of him. I’ve still got a lot of time for Liam Livingstone and there’s no reason why anyone’s England career should be over at the age of 32,” he said.Livingstone previously described the team’s atmosphere as one of cliques, saying, “If you’re in, you’re in, and if you’re not in, nobody cares about you.” Key rejected that claim and said such reactions were to be expected when players are left out.Key said, “Unfortunately, you’ll always have times when in these roles – especially when you’re struggling – you’ll always have people you’ll be upset with and that’s absolutely OK.”He also said that it is not possible to keep everyone satisfied in such roles. “But ultimately, Liam Livingstone, or any of these players, have a chance to play for England at the beginning of the summer in county cricket,” he said.Livingstone has come to India for this Indian Premier LeagueWhere he will play for Sunrisers Hyderabad after being contracted for Rs 13 crore.
