From Congress to BJP: Former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined BJP citing insult; Chief Minister Sarma supported the nomination of the candidate for the upcoming elections

Guwahati: Former Congress MP from Nagaon Pradyut Bordoloi donned the saffron color in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia in New Delhi on Wednesday.Bordoloi resigned from the Congress on Tuesday night, ending his three-decade association with the party, citing humiliation and being sidelined since he supported Shashi Tharoor’s candidature in the AICC presidential election in 2022.Later, Sarma accompanied Bordoloi to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s office where the two leaders held discussions.Bordoloi said, “The Chief Minister’s vision of working for Assam and his positive vision of taking the state forward has attracted me to join the BJP. For the last two years, I have been facing insults and felt isolated within the Congress. While joining the BJP, I have made it clear that I will continue to work for the Assamese people with my head held high.”Bordoloi was the chairman of the Congress manifesto committee for the upcoming assembly elections. Sarma said, “BJP national president Nitin Nabin approved Bordoloi’s joining on Tuesday. Our state president Dilip Saikia has welcomed him into the party.”Sarma said the party would recommend a ticket for Bordoloi in the upcoming elections. Asked whether Bordoloi would be fielded as a BJP candidate in the upcoming assembly elections in Assam, Sarma said the party’s state unit would recommend his name for the election.“Bordoloi is a sitting Congress MP and his term is still three years left. Since he himself is leaving the post of MP and joining (BJP). Apparently, he had to leave the post of MP due to the anti-defection law. Therefore, the party will have to take care of them,” CM Sarma told the media. The BJP’s Central Election Committee, headed by party chief Nabeen Kumar, is scheduled to meet on Wednesday evening to discuss and decide on the party’s candidates for the assembly elections in Assam and Puducherry.Congress described his exit as “unfortunate”. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “I think he was angry with the ticket allotment and I wish we had got a chance to talk, it is unfortunate.”A two-time MP from Nagaon and a four-time former MLA, Bordoloi was a cabinet minister in the Traun Gogoi-led Congress government in the state.Soon after Bordoloi sent his resignation letter to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday evening, state PCC chief Gaurav Gogoi and AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh visited Bordoloi at his New Delhi residence, but apparently could not convince him to reverse his decision.Bordoloi’s son, Pratik, is the Congress candidate from the Margherita constituency for the state elections.Bordoloi said in his one-line resignation letter, “Today, with extreme sadness, I tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and primary membership of the Indian National Congress.”
