Localities like Beltola and Anil Nagar found themselves underwater, creating a challenging scenario for commuters who had to rethink their daily routes. The problem worsened when, despite prior alerts, a landslide occurred near the Governor’s office, adding to the city’s woes.

Guwahati: Heavy rain on Tuesday night once again exposed the possibility of waterlogging in the city, with many major areas submerged in water and traffic almost coming to a standstill.Commuters faced great difficulty in walking on the submerged road, especially in low-lying areas where drainage systems failed to cope with the sudden rain.Severe waterlogging has been reported in areas like Beltola Wireless, Hatigaon, Rukminigaon, Bashisthapur, Anil Nagar. Residents said even a few hours of heavy rain was enough to flood the roads. Many office goers and daily commuters faced delays, while some were forced to abandon their routes connected to the main road.Tanmay Kalita, a college student living in Anil Nagar, said, “It has become difficult for me to go to my college because our street gets flooded. It takes hours for the water to drain out. Sometimes I get late for my classes or there are days when I miss my classes.”For commuters heading towards Lal Ganesh from the Cycle Factory area, the road is full of potholes, and a layer of mud has made movement difficult.The situation worsened in Kharguli area, where a landslide occurred close to the governor’s office. Local people allege that they got wind of the incident and informed the Divisional Engineer of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), but received no response. There is no information about any casualty.GMC Mayor Mrigen Saraniya came to the spot to take stock of the situation. “While the plains are facing severe waterlogging due to the heavy rains that have lashed the city in recent times, people living in the hilly areas are being equally affected as they are facing landslides. We urge residents to remain vigilant, as such incidents are likely to recur, especially where hills have been eroded,” he said.According to the latest forecast released by the Indian Meteorological Department, the city recorded 20.3 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, indicating continuation of pre-monsoon activity over the region. Total rainfall last month was 135.6 mm, reflecting significant accumulation in March, the report said.
