Federal immigration officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot a man Tuesday morning during a law enforcement operation in Stanislaus County, California, officials said. The shooting occurred during a vehicle stop on Interstate 5 near Sperry Avenue in Paterson.The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that ICE agents were involved in the incident and that no local law enforcement officers were directly involved in the shooting. A “suspect” was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after the incident.ICE has identified the shooting victim as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez. Hernandez is wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection with a murder, according to a statement from the acting director of ICE.ICE officials said that during the attempted arrest, the man allegedly used his vehicle in an attempt to run over an officer. In response the agents opened fire. The agency described the firing as defensive.Several on and off ramps at Interstate 5 and Sperry Avenue were closed for much of the day due to the shooting. Drivers were warned about major traffic delays and asked to avoid the area.The FBI is involved in the investigation along with federal and local authorities.
