IPL 2026: Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar shine as RCB beats MI in a thrilling 462-run encounter at Wankhede. cricket news
New Delhi: Royal Challengers Bangalore produced a brilliant all-round performance to beat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in a high-scoring IPL encounter at the Wankhede. Powered by explosive half-centuries from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli and the captain Rajat PatidarRCB posted a mammoth total of 240/4, which MI could not completely chase down despite a late fightback under Sherfane Rutherford.RCB were on pace from the start, with Kohli setting the tone in trademark style, including a brilliant six early on. Phil Salt then took charge and tore apart the MI attack with fearless strokeplay, punishing both pace and spin and scoring 78 runs off just 36 balls.
An opening stand of 120 immediately put MI on the back foot.Even when MI tried to change the bowlers, nothing worked. Salt hit three consecutive sixes on Mitchell Santner, while Mayank Markande was dismissed. Eventually, Shardul Thakur got the breakthrough by dismissing Salt, but the damage was already done.Next came Rajat Patidar and was in full attack mode, scoring a half-century in 17 balls and continued the carnage with clean hitting on the infield. Kohli held one end and completed his half-century before being dismissed after scoring 50 runs in 37 balls in the 15th over. After this, Tim David added unbeaten 34 runs and took RCB to the challenging score of 240 runs.
MI fell behind in the end
Despite a good start, Mumbai Indians’ target was never fully decided. Ryan Rickelton looked promising with 37 off 22, but wickets at crucial moments derailed the momentum. Due to Rohit Sharma’s retirement due to injury, his balance got disturbed in the beginning itself.Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya tried to control themselves, but RCB bowlers kept attacking at regular intervals. Krunal Pandya’s tight spells and Suyyash Sharma’s breakthroughs in the middle overs ensured MI never got a real launchpad, with many overs going without a six during the crucial phase. The only real resistance came late from Sherfane Rutherford, who closed the gap with an unbeaten 71 off 31 balls with six sixes. However, the target of 241 proved too difficult and MI finished at 222/5.In the end, RCB’s top-order firepower and early dominance sealed a comfortable 18-run win in a run-fest at the Wankhede.
