Court to examine proposal for future elections

“Whether such recourse should be taken before the next parliamentary elections and/or state assembly elections should be examined,” the bench said while issuing the notice, news agency PTI reported.The petition, filed by lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, has sought a biometric verification system at polling stations to prevent electoral malpractices such as impersonation and duplicate voting.The petition argued that issues such as “bribery, undue influence, impersonation, duplicate voting and ghost voting” were affecting the “purity and integrity of the electoral process”.The development comes amid the ongoing debate on electoral reforms, with the court now set to consider whether technological interventions such as biometric verification can be integrated into India’s voting process ahead of future elections.
