TOI correspondent from London: Nirav Modi on Thursday stood in the dock in the Bank of India (BOI) case and said that the banks, in collusion with CBI and ED, have destroyed his 20 years of business and he has not committed any fraud against Punjab National Bank.Nirav was testifying in a separate civil suit in which he is accused of owing BOI more than $10.7 million (Rs 100 crore) through a personal guarantee he allegedly gave on a loan given to Firestar Diamond FZE. He denies that he “knowingly and knowingly” signed the guarantee and says he does not owe the BOI anything.He emerged from jail wearing a smart suit and looking unfazed by Wednesday’s adverse extradition decision. He took the oath on Bhagavad Gita and placed both his hands on the bars of the dock while reading from the laptop.Beasley, representing BOI, asked him why he claimed that there were no significant adverse events for BOI seeking BOI loan in 2018, given the allegations that had surfaced in the media at that time about his companies and their alleged fraud against PNB.Nirav replied, “It started from February 5.” “That’s when the media reported on it,” he said. He said, “I remember the date. It was a life-changing event.” “They said Rs 11,000 crore, it was Rs 6,000 crore, there was no fraud, and I don’t think their amount would be in the top 20 in India.”After this he accused PNB of collusion with CBI. “Normally there would be a preliminary investigation and then an FIR – an FIR being filed without hearing the complainant is unheard of. On February 2, I don’t think anyone except the CBI was aware of it. Perhaps PNB was working with the CBI because PNB had put it out on social media on February 3. On February 15, the ED put a stop to everything – no manufacturing or finance could continue. My business was shut down and the ED and CBI seized and confiscated everything.“After the hearing, he told TOI that he could not comment on the extradition decision.
