Speaking at an event in Kolkata ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders’ clash with Lucknow Super Giants, Ganguly made a strong case for Shami’s return, saying the veteran should share the new ball. Jasprit Bumrah.Shami, who is currently representing Lucknow Supergiants after signing for Rs 10 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad, has made an immediate impact with excellent performances in IPL 2026.On 5 April, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he bowled a remarkable spell of 2/9 in four overs, which included 18 dot balls, and dismissed dangerous openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head early in the innings. Earlier, against Delhi Capitals, he dismissed KL Rahul for a golden duck on the very first ball and finished with figures of 1/28.Ganguly was particularly impressed by Shami’s spell against SRH, describing it as “phenomenal” considering the quality of the opposition.Ganguly said, “He should not bowl anywhere else but at the other end to Jasprit Bumrah. He is that good. We all saw that spell in four overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad the other night, scoring nine runs against two of the best T20 players, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. He was phenomenal.”Domestic form and fitness in focusThe former India captain recalled Shami’s eight wickets and also highlighted his strong domestic performances ranji trophy Semi-final for Bengal.He said, “He had a very good Ranji Trophy season for Bengal. I still remember that semi-final, even though Bengal lost, he took eight wickets. He played a key role in taking the team here. I am very happy that he wants to continue playing in the Ranji Trophy. It is difficult for a fast bowler, but there is nothing better than watching Mohammed Shami play with the new ball.” Despite his consistent good performances in domestic cricket and IPL, Shami is out of the India setup under the chief selector Ajit Agarkar. However, Ganguly believes that the fast bowler still has a lot to offer at the highest level.Ganguly said, “He looks fit and sharp. You get into peak form after bowling consistently. I still believe he should play for India. Hopefully his time comes again because he is so good.”
