Parliament will be adjourned on April 2 for a meeting after the assembly elections.

New Delhi: Parliament is likely to be adjourned till a definite date when the current session ends on April 2 and not indefinitely, as is the practice, as the government seeks to reconvene both Houses to introduce its bill to implement women’s reservation in directly elected legislatures from the next Lok Sabha elections.“We can announce the date on which Parliament will meet when Parliament is adjourned next week,” a senior government official said on Saturday. With deliberations still ongoing within the government, Parliament is likely to meet after voting ends in four states and one Union Territory on April 29.A fixed date for the meeting of Parliament to discuss the two bills, one for delimitation based on the 2011 census and the other to amend constitutional provisions to implement quota for women in one-third of Lok Sabha and assembly seats, will clearly convey the government’s determination. This will add to the buzz during the assembly elections, with parties wooing women voters, which will be an added advantage for the ruling NDA.
