'More sweat, more pride': Prasad Sanyal sets the stage for TOISA 2025 in Lucknow
Prasad Sanya, group business head of TOI, Indiatimes and WhatsApp

Lucknow: The eighth edition of The Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2025 began on a grand note in Lucknow on Saturday, celebrating the tireless spirit and excellence of India’s finest athletes. Amidst a gathering of sports stalwarts, Olympic heroes and rising stars, Prasad Sanyal, Group Business Head, TOI, Indiatimes and WhatsApp, delivered an inspiring inaugural address that outlined the evolution of the awards from an event to a national movement.Welcoming the distinguished audience to the heart of Uttar Pradesh, Sanyal highlighted that TOISA has become the cornerstone of the Indian sporting calendar. “Years ago when we first conceptualized the Times of India Sports Awards, we had a simple yet powerful vision – to create a platform that truly celebrates the spirit of Indian sports,” Sanyal said. “Not just wins, not just medals, but the journey, the struggle, the sweat and the unwavering determination that defines every athlete’s story.”This year’s theme, “More Sweat More Glory” was the focal point of the evening. Sanyal emphasized that the accolades presented on stage were merely the tip of the iceberg, representing years of invisible sacrifice.“Glory doesn’t come easily. It comes from countless hours spent in the gym when no one is watching. It comes from early morning training sessions when the world is still asleep. It comes from getting up after every fall, every defeat, every setback and saying ‘one more time.’ That’s what our athletes do. day to day. year after year. And tonight, we honor that sentiment,” he said. Celebrating the awards in Lucknow for the third consecutive year, Sanyal lauded the growing role of the host state as a nursery for champions. On this occasion, he said that the change in the sports landscape of Uttar Pradesh before the arrival of Honorable Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been “remarkable”.Acknowledging the distinguished jury comprising stalwarts like Leander Paes, Mithali Raj, Abhinav Bindra, Devendra Jhajharia, Sharath Kamal and PR Sreejesh, Sanyal remarked that their presence bridges the gap between past glory and future potential. In a poignant moment of his address, Sanyal paid special tribute to the para-athletes present. “To our para-athletes, you are champions of the human spirit. Your courage and resilience teach us what true strength really means,” he said, reiterating TOI’s commitment to sports as a source of national inspiration rather than mere entertainment.Concluding his address with a call to light the fire in the next generation, Sanyal kicked off the festivities: “Let’s make this evening unforgettable. Let’s cheer for our champions. Let’s celebrate their sweat, their glory and their incredible journey! Thank you, and let’s have a wonderful evening! Jai Hind!”

Assam Assembly Elections 2026: From eviction drive to NRC debate, issues to dominate state election campaign

Now with the announcement of the Assam Assembly elections schedule, several key issues like eviction, infiltration and development projects are expected to dominate the campaign rhetoric of political parties ahead of the elections.BJP currently has 64 MLAs in the 126-member Assam Assembly. Among its allies, there are nine MLAs from Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), seven from United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and three from Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

Crisis within Congress: How BJP’s defection strategy is reshaping Assam’s 2026 election battle

In the opposition ranks, Congress has 26 MLAs, followed by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 15 MLAs. CPI(M) and an independent have one member each in the assembly.eviction: The state government’s policy of evicting alleged encroachers, many of whom are from the Muslim community, is expected to emerge as a major campaign issue, with both the ruling coalition and the opposition likely to raise it during the election campaign.Another major issue of controversy is the government’s crackdown on child marriage, which has led to several arrests and cases being registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The ruling coalition is expected to present these measures as a significant step towards eliminating the social menace, while the opposition is likely to accuse the government of disproportionately targeting the Muslim community, as cited by PTI.The ruling coalition is also expected to highlight its efforts to reclaim forest land, session and temple properties and other government lands from alleged encroachment. However, the opposition is likely to frame the campaign as a humanitarian crisis, pointing to the demolitions that have left many homeless and forced to live on the streets, with some losing their livelihoods.infiltration: Illegal immigration is another long-standing issue in Assam that is likely to feature prominently in the election campaign. The issue has been at the center of state politics for decades and was a key factor behind the Assam agitation and the subsequent signing of the Assam Accord, as cited by PTI.The BJP-led government says it has taken steps to implement the provisions of the agreement. However, the opposition is expected to highlight what it says is the government’s failure to deliver on promises to provide constitutional, legislative and administrative protections to protect and promote the cultural, social and linguistic identity of the indigenous Assamese people. Two key aspects related to the immigration debate, the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), are also likely to figure prominently during the campaign. The ruling party is expected to argue that opposition to the CAA is misplaced, given that only a limited number of Hindus from Bangladesh have applied for citizenship under the law.Development Projects/Welfare Schemes:The state government is expected to highlight major development initiatives in Assam, especially infrastructure projects in roads, railways, airports and waterways. It is also likely to showcase investments such as the Tata Semiconductor Unit and other agreements signed during the second edition of the ‘Advantage Assam’ Business Summit. However, the opposition may argue that development has been concentrated in select areas and has come at the expense of indigenous communities, alleging that their lands have been acquired for such projects. The BJP and its allies are also likely to emphasize the state government’s welfare schemes for women, including monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,250, support for women entrepreneurs and various health initiatives. Since women constitute almost half of the voters, the opposition could retaliate by claiming that crimes against women have not declined and that the distribution of benefits has been unequal. The ruling coalition will also highlight its recruitment drive in government departments, which it says has resulted in the appointment of over 1.6 lakh youth. Additionally, it is likely to focus on welfare measures for tea garden workers, a large voting block that traditionally supported the Congress but has largely switched its allegiance to the BJP since 2016.Zubeen Garg’s death: Another issue that attracted significant attention was the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore in September 2025, following which justice was demanded in connection with his alleged murder. Opposition parties are expected to accuse the BJP-led government of lack of commitment towards ensuring justice in the case. However, the ruling government can point out that it formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), arrested the accused and the case is currently sub judice.

Statues taken down, streets renamed, graffiti covered up: Controversy grows after claims against Cesar Chavez

Statues taken down, streets renamed, graffiti covered up: Controversy grows after claims against Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chávez’s name and likeness were swiftly removed from buildings, streets, parks and schools after allegations emerged that the farmworker rights icon had been accused of sexually assaulting minors and fellow labor leader Dolores Huerta. Within just two days of the New York Times investigation revealing the claims, officials and activists across California moved quickly to erase Chávez’s presence from public spaces. Many people said they were shocked by the allegations and felt immediate action was necessary. The speed of the response was described as unprecedented, especially in a state where Chávez’s legacy is deeply embedded in the fight for farmworkers’ rights, the Los Angeles Times reported.Officials noted that reevaluating place names as the dark side of history becomes more apparent is nothing new, pointing to recent steps to change the names of other controversial figures, including those associated with the Confederacy and Father Junipero Serra, though those efforts were slower and more deliberate. In the hours and days following the allegations against Chávez, many officials said that communities should respond quickly and focus on a movement larger than Chávez, adding that these actions sent a message that such behavior was unacceptable. On Thursday, L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and City Council members announced they would drop the holiday honoring Chávez’s birthday and instead rename it “Farm Workers Day” in honor of farmworkers.“I appreciate that my community has the honesty and strength to accept these new revelations in a very expedient manner, and as we do in Los Angeles,” said Los Angeles City Council member Monica Rodriguez, adding that the effort to rename the holiday was immediate. Two years after Chávez’s death, Araceli Moller de Barrios, who worked in the fields for nearly 30 years after arriving in the United States in 1995, said the news that Chávez had sexually abused young teenagers and Huerta had sent shock waves through the community she worked with daily as they struggled for better working conditions and safety. She said that she was sexually harassed by supervisors and that she had seen other women experience harassment.Although he didn’t work in the fields at the time, he said he agreed that cities and elected officials should recognize the hard work of farm workers who toil in the summer to supply food across the country.“People don’t know the sacrifice, what it’s like to eat in the hot sun, when they didn’t provide shade, when there weren’t bathrooms nearby,” he said. “They’re the ones who deserve everything.”There was talk in some communities of removing the Chávez name and replacing it with more general respect for farm workers and activists, placing the movement above any individual. In an interview with Latino USA, Huerta said that streets named after Chávez should be named after the movement.“Everything should be named after the martyrs of the farm worker movement. Every street should be named after them,” Huerta said.Moller de Barrios said she would like to see Huerta honored through the renaming of streets and parks for his sacrifice in fighting for farm workers’ rights and for bearing his secret, “for all the things that fell upon him”. The allegations are a reminder that they have the power to speak, he said.“We have to use our voices,” she said. “We are no one’s sexual object.”Irene de Barricua, policy and communications director of Lidares Campesinas, a farmworker and women-led organization, told The Times that farmworkers “do not want to be politicized or romanticized, but simply humanized” and provided the dignity of working in safe and fair conditions.Chávez’s name has been continuously honored since his death in 1993, including renaming an old Brooklyn Avenue on L.A.’s Eastside for Chávez. That move faced controversy from residents who argued that the city was erasing their history and burdening them with the cost of replacing the stationery, but over time naming things after Chávez became shorthand to honor Latino civil rights and activism. As the controversial legacies of historical figures became mainstream, their presence faded from the public eye.In 2020, the murder of George Floyd sparked controversy over race across the country, prompting communities and institutions, including in California, to remove public monuments of former slaveholders or prominent Confederate figures. It then considered taking down statues of Father Junipero Serra, described as the architect of California’s Roman Catholic missions, whose work during Spanish colonization marked the beginning of exploitation and destruction for native Californians since their arrival in 1769. The debate raged because many people still held high regard for the Franciscan priest who was canonized in 2015 but had statues removed, including one in downtown Los Angeles south of Olvera Street. The removal of Father Junipero Serra took months and sparked debate within the Latino community about Serra’s place in history.Katherine Goodis, a history professor and director of the public history program at UC Riverside, said removing Chávez from public view was the easy part.“Moving too fast and not having the complex and challenging process needed to actually work toward more than a superficial appearance of revisionist history is a terrible idea,” Goodis said.He argued that the real issue is who gets to declare the hero. Historians and teachers, including Goodis, said that rather than focusing on one individual to represent a historical movement or event, more effort should be made to elevate lesser-known figures in the community who contributed to the broader cause and with whom the community can identify and connect. The Cesar Chávez Foundation and family said Friday it was aware of the city of Los Angeles’ intention to rename the holiday that once celebrated Chávez to honor farm workers, and said it supports the move.“The decision about how to celebrate the movement and its participants rests with the local communities who organize those recognitions, events and commemorations. This has always been the case,” the foundation’s statement said. “Whatever decision they ultimately make we support and respect.”
