‘Police refused to help’: Indian-origin Sikh restaurant owner Harman Kapoor says after release amid ‘No Halal’ controversy

'Police refused to help': Indian-origin Sikh restaurant owner Harman Kapoor says after release amid 'No Halal' controversy

An Indian-origin Sikh restaurant owner in west London has alleged that the Metropolitan Police “repeatedly refused” to help his family despite serious threats, hours after he was detained and later released after a tense confrontation outside his restaurant.Rangrezz owner Harman Singh Kapoor claimed in a social media post that his “anger” was motivated by months of threats.“Many people are unhappy with my aggression against radical elements who are constantly making my life hell,” he wrote, adding: “The Metropolitan Police repeatedly refused to help my family when a mob of unruly radicals threatened to kill and rape us.”He also posted a video after his release, saying supporters had gathered outside the restaurant and calling his arrest “illegal”.

Tension for months over ‘non-halal’ stance

The controversy centers on Indian restaurant Rangrezz, a neighborhood in west London, which has operated for about 16 years and has already announced plans to close.Kapoor said that the business was under constant pressure after publicly announcing that it would not serve halal meat. A prominent sign outside the restaurant read: “Proudly we do not sell halal.”As a Sikh, Kapoor said he prefers to serve jerk meat, a method of slaughter that involves a single rapid blow, which some Sikhs consider religiously acceptable.According to him, this decision led to months of backlash, including fake online reviews, threats, and repeated confrontations.

Crowd gathers, situation worsens

Tensions reached a peak on 14 March when Kapoor promoted a “non-halal meetup” at the restaurant, asking supporters to attend and record any disturbances.Later that day, a large crowd gathered outside the premises in Hammersmith, with social media posts claiming that more than 100 people had surrounded the restaurant. Video shared online shows the heated atmosphere, with Kapoor describing the situation as dangerous. He said he carries his kirpan, a ceremonial Sikh blade, for protection amid fears for his family’s safety.

arrest and release

Kapoor said that hours after the crowd dispersed, the Metropolitan Police detained him for allegedly carrying a religious dagger.Police have not yet issued a detailed public statement clarifying the circumstances of the arrest or whether any charges were filed.Kapoor was later released, after which he posted videos showing supporters gathering outside the restaurant. In another post he wrote, “I can’t even hold a knife now, can’t even eat my food. I could get arrested by the Met Police.”What started as a dispute over halal and non-halal food has now turned into a broader cultural and political controversy. Kapoor’s supporters claim he is being targeted for practicing his religious beliefs and protecting his business, while critics argue the situation has worsened amid rising tensions over provocative messages and social media.

Congress: Rajya Sabha elections: Congress alleges BJP tried to ‘steal votes’ in Haryana, warns cross-voters of strict action. india news

NDA's victory in Rajya Sabha elections has triggered a war of words in Bihar as the opposition's divisions have increased.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda with Karamveer Singh Boudh, elected Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana.

New Delhi: The Congress charged on tuesday BJP Despite attempts to “steal votes” and “murder democracy” in the Haryana Rajya Sabha elections, the party claimed it will take “strictest action” against its own MLAs for alleged cross voting. The sharp attack came hours after the dramatic and closely watched Rajya Sabha contest in Haryana ended at midnight, in which the BJP and Congress won one seat each, following allegations of vote secrecy violations, invalidation of ballot papers and cross-voting.

Watch

NDA’s victory in Rajya Sabha elections has triggered a war of words in Bihar as the opposition’s divisions have increased.

After a tense night-long counting, BJP and Congress got one seat each.

From Haryana, Sanjay Bhatia of BJP and Karamveer Singh Buddhist of Congress were elected to Rajya Sabha.Bhatia, a former Lok Sabha MP from Karnal, easily won the first seat with 39 first preference votes. Boudh, a retired Haryana government employee and a prominent Dalit activist who currently serves as the coordinator of the Congress’ national Scheduled Caste department, secured the second seat with 28 votes.Independent candidate Satish Nandal got 16 votes, leading to a narrow contest for the second seat after cross-voting in what was otherwise a comfortable arithmetic for the Congress.Under the Rajya Sabha election formula, the quota required to win a seat was 2,767 votes worth, and both Bhatia and Boudh crossed that figure, leaving no room for further transfer of votes.

Deependra Hooda accused of ‘vote theft’, said- BJP tried to ‘murder democracy’

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda congratulated the party leadership and lauded Buddh’s victory, but launched a scathing attack on the BJP over the manner of the elections.According to PTI, Hooda alleged, “Under the cover of darkness of night in Haryana, BJP tried to kill democracy and steal votes.”He claimed that the BJP “has no faith in democracy” and only wanted to “capture power”, but said Congress MLAs and workers remained alert and ensured the victory of Boudh, whom he described as someone who worked for social justice.Quoting news agency ANI, Hooda said the BJP resorted to “every possible strategy” and “such immoral politics for just one Rajya Sabha seat would not have been seen anywhere in the entire country before today.”

Congress accuses Returning Officer of horse trading, favoritism

Hooda alleged that the BJP tried “all kinds of tactics”, including encouraging cross-voting and attempting to win seats through horse-trading.He further claimed that when this did not succeed, the BJP “activated its B-team INLD”, alleging that the Indian National Lok Dal did not clarify its stand until the day of voting.Hooda alleged, “When more than 30 votes were cast in favor of Congress, INLD ran away from voting.”After this he accused BJP of influencing the Election Commission and accused the Returning Officer of bias.“The returning officer showed favoritism and canceled four of our votes even though all of them were valid. This was done when another returning officer had already put the same votes in the valid tray. This shows that the BJP was involved in ‘vote theft’ in the Rajya Sabha elections.”Hooda further said, “All the 4 votes which were declared invalid during our counting are valid… This is a victory for democracy.”

Congress accepted cross voting, said preparations for ‘strict action’

Congress also attacked BJP and admitted that some of its MLAs had cross-voted.Hooda said some Congress MLAs in Haryana indulged in cross-voting and warned that action would be taken.“Those of our MLAs who have sold their conscience and integrity – not only them, but also their next generations will be held accountable by the people of Haryana. The Congress party is going to take the strictest action against those MLAs.”Hooda also said that the public would not forgive those MLAs, while those who remained loyal to the party despite “temptation and pressure” have earned more respect among the people.

Five votes invalid, INLD absent

Many twists and turns were seen in the elections. Two Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) MLAs abstained, reducing the number of valid votes to 88 at the start of voting in the 90-member Haryana Assembly.INLD leaders Abhay Singh Chautala and Aditya Devi Lal said that the party has decided to remain absent keeping in mind the sentiments of the people.Officials said five votes were later declared invalid – four from the Congress and one from the BJP.Both Congress and BJP approached the Election Commission alleging violation of vote secrecy, with the Election Commission declaring Congress MLA Paramveer Singh’s vote invalid.Invalidation of ballots became a major issue, with Congress alleging selective targeting and procedural bias.

Despite ‘illegal cancellation of votes’, Boudh calls it a victory

Congress winner Karamveer Singh Boudh also raised questions over the cancellation of votes after his victory.“The votes were canceled illegally, but I got the blessings of the Congress party and the people. I got love from the top Congress leadership,” ANI quoted Boudh as saying.Congress leaders described his victory as politically significant, especially after BJP leaders had dismissed him as a “weak candidate”.Hooda said a ‘befitting reply’ has been given to those who called a social activist weak and called the result a ‘victory for the Constitution’.Congress Scheduled Caste department chief Rajendra Pal Gautam, who accompanied Hooda at the press conference, said he was “very happy” that the party has nominated “a true Ambedkarite” to the Rajya Sabha, PTI reported.

fresh assembly flashpoint

The Rajya Sabha result was also echoed in the Haryana Assembly on Tuesday. In a separate development, Congress MLAs walked out of the Assembly, accusing it of undermining democratic values.Congress MLA Geeta Bhukkal claimed that the House has turned into a “market where things are bought and sold” and alleged that ministers have openly admitted to “buying” MLAs.“The Constitution has been strangled and that is why we are boycotting,” he said, as quoted by ANI.

BJP hit back

However, BJP rejected Congress’s allegations and turned the issue of cross-voting on the opposition.BJP winner Sanjay Bhatia said that Congress is worried because its own MLAs are not united.Bhatia said, “Congress’s responsibility was to unite its workers and MLAs, now they are blaming us for cross-voting their workers, which is not right.”Haryana minister Mahipal Dhanda also rejected Congress’s allegation, saying independent candidates have every right to seek votes and alleged that Congress has “held their workers hostage”.

Congress narrowly escaped

With five Congress MLAs reportedly cross-voting, independent candidate Satish Nandal could have potentially matched Boudh if he had also secured BJP candidate Bhatia’s 11 second preference votes and if one more Congress MLA had cross-voted in his favour. This arithmetic underlines how close the Congress came to losing a seat it was expected to win easily. In the end, despite bitter allegations of cross-voting, illegal ballot papers and horse-trading, the Congress managed to secure one of the two seats – but the result has opened up a new internal crisis over dissident MLAs, even as it has fueled a new political battle with the BJP over the conduct of voting.

From Nandigram to Bhabanipur: BJP official prepares for tough fight with Mamata Banerjee

Mamata today announced the list of 291 TMC candidates, preparing the ground for a fierce election battle with the BJP in the state. The West Bengal Chief Minister expressed confidence that her party will once again get a comfortable majority. Announcing the names of the party candidates, Mamata said, “We will win more than 226 seats in the 2026 assembly elections. BJP’s seats will decrease in this election. They will get a befitting reply for their anti-people policies.”On the other hand, BJP is confident of winning West Bengal this time and Suvendu will also repeat the achievement of 2021 by defeating Mamata once again. West Bengal BJP president and MP Samik Bhattacharya said, “Suvendu Adhikari will win from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur by huge margins. This is not just about the BJP; it reflects the mood of the people.”But while Suvendu will try to keep Mamata in check in Bhawanipur, she herself may face a tough situation in Nandigram, where TMC has fielded a former BJP panchayat chief.Pabitra Kar, considered close to Suvendu Adhikari, rejoined the ruling TMC hours before the party announced candidates and has been pitted against the BJP leader in Nandigram.TMC said in a social media post that Kar was “dissatisfied with the anti-people stance of the BJP”. Kar, who left TMC and joined the BJP in November 2020, played a key role in strengthening the saffron party’s organizational structure in the Boyal-1 region and is believed to have been instrumental in securing gains for the BJP in the region five years ago. In the 2021 assembly elections, Suvendu Adhikari had won narrowly in Nandigram by getting 1,10,764 votes, while Mamata got 1,08,808 votes.Mamta targets Election Commission, raises questions on timing of administrative reshuffleMamata launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission, alleging that at the behest of the BJP, senior administrative and police officers are being transferred before the assembly elections.Addressing reporters while announcing the list of Trinamool Congress candidates for the 2026 assembly elections, Banerjee wondered “Why are senior officials being transferred just before Eid? Is there a plan to instigate riots before the elections?”The Chief Minister alleged that the list of officers who were transferred was prepared in the BJP office and the decision was implemented only by the Election Commission. He further alleged that some officials were brought in from outside West Bengal to assist the BJP in the electoral process. Accusing the Election Commission of working under political pressure, the TMC supremo said the Election Commission was “playing a good game on behalf of the BJP”.“He should directly campaign for the BJP,” he said.Banerjee also alleged that the transfers were aimed at facilitating the movement of money and arms to the BJP ahead of the elections.

Utah mother who wrote children’s book on grief ‘Are You With Me’ found guilty of husband’s murder

Utah mother who wrote children's book on grief 'Are You With Me' found guilty of husband's murder

Kauri Richins, the self-published author of grief-stricken children’s book Are You With Me, was convicted of the aggravated murder of her husband, whom she poisoned with fentanyl. Her husband Eric Richins was murdered in March 2022, and Kauri Richins published the book a year later. He put five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in her cocktail. The jury deliberated for three hours and returned its verdict.Richins, a real estate agent, was deep in debt and wanted to leave her husband, but did not do so because of money, prosecutors said. She was planning a future with another man with life insurance policies that she had opened for him without her husband’s knowledge. Prosecutors showed the jury text messages between Richins and Robert Josh Grossman, the man with whom she was allegedly having an affair, in which she fantasized about leaving her husband, earning millions in the divorce, and marrying Grossman.

Luxury prisons for rich America: Things Richins discovered on Google

Richins’ search history includes ‘What is the lethal dose of fentanyl, luxury prisons for rich America and ‘if someone is poisoned what is the name written on the death certificate’ etc. After poisoning her husband, she called 911 and prosecutors said this was not “the sound of a wife being widowed.” “It’s the sound of a wife becoming a black widow,” he said. Before his arrest in May 2023, Richins self-published a children’s book about dealing with the loss of a parent. During the hearing of the case, the lead investigator revealed that he had actually paid a ghostwriting company to write the book for him. The book states that it aims to create peace and comfort for children who have lost a loved one and it follows a young boy who questions whether his father is with him during special moments such as birthdays, Christmas, and the first day of school.

India UN speech: India criticizes Pakistan for ‘fabricating’ stories of Islamophobia at UN, depicts Ahmadiyya repression, Afghan bombings. india news

India criticizes Pakistan for ‘fabricating’ Islamophobic stories at UN, condemns Ahmadiyya repression, Afghan bombings

India on Monday called out Pakistan at the United Nations for habitually “fabricating” stories of Islamophobia against the neighboring country, while questioning Islamabad’s own record on its treatment of minorities and its actions against Afghanistan during Ramadan. On the occasion of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia at the UN General Assembly, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathneni Harish issued a sharp rebuke to Pakistan and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), while also urging the UN to avoid frameworks that focus only on one faith rather than tackling all forms of religious discrimination.

‘India’s Western Neighbor’ creates stories of Islamophobia

“India’s western neighbor is a classic example of creating imaginative stories of Islamophobia in its own neighbourhood,” Harish said.In a scathing attack, he said: “Wonder what one would call the brutal repression of Ahmadis in this country, or the mass withdrawal of hapless Afghans or the aerial bombing campaign in this holy month of Ramadan?”Harish was responding to Pakistan’s repeated attempts to level allegations against India in multilateral forums under the banner of Islamophobia. He also said that the OIC, which “our western neighbor has systematically attempted to arm against India”, has repeatedly made “false and baseless allegations” against the country.

India warns against weaponizing religion at UN

Harish stressed that the UN must pay attention to “the growing trend and dangers of weaponizing religious identity and instrumentalizing it to serve narrow political objectives by state and non-state actors alike.”According to news agency PTI, he cautioned that politicizing religion does not resolve grievances and instead risks legitimizing “selective, polarizing narratives” that deepen divisions.“The United Nations was conceived as an institution that transcends religion, culture and politics. Its credibility rests on universality and impartiality,” he said.He further urged “caution against frameworks that focus exclusively on one faith, without addressing the broader phenomenon of religious fear in all its manifestations.”India also underlined that the 1981 Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination based on Religion or Belief remains a balanced and enduring instrument as it protects the followers of all religions without privileging any one religion.

India highlights its Muslim population, Kashmir e-presentation

Emphasizing on India’s pluralistic character, Harish said India is home to more than 200 million Muslims, one of the largest Muslim populations in the world. He said that Muslims in India, including Muslims of Jammu and Kashmir, elect their representatives to speak for them.“The only ‘phobia’ clearly visible here is against the multicultural and peaceful co-existence that all communities in India enjoy, including the Muslim community,” he said.He said such narratives run contrary to the “fundamental ethos” of India and instead “have perpetuated communalism and terrorist mentality in this country since its inception.”

Afghanistan context adds sharp edge

Harish referred to the “aerial-bombing campaign in this holy month of Ramzan” amid rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.Afghanistan has alleged that an air strike on Kabul’s Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital on Monday night killed nearly 400 people and injured nearly 250, with Taliban spokesmen blaming Pakistan. However, Pakistani media outlet Samaa, citing security sources, rejected the allegation and described as “ridiculous” the claim that a drug treatment hospital was attacked.Pakistani officials said the strikes targeted Taliban-linked military infrastructure in Kabul and Nangarhar and were carried out with “no collateral damage”.
