Government may defer fuel efficiency norms for car companies amid lobbying

New Delhi: Amid lobbying by car companies, the government may defer the implementation of corporate average fuel efficiency norms (CAFE 3.0) beyond April 2027. The PM’s office has held two meetings during the last three weeks and more deliberations are planned on the issue to work out a formula that is acceptable to the industry and helps improve fuel efficiency and emissions. At a meeting at the PMO on Monday, the power ministry gave a detailed presentation on the proposed CAFE 3.0 norms, while highlighting the “urgent” need to notify the norms. For the first time, the ministry presented a detailed assessment of the expected performance of the country’s top five carmakers. It said that based on the proposed framework, which will be released only for public comment Tata Motors At the same time, we will be able to achieve the target between 2027-28 to 2031-32. Maruti Suzuki And Hyundai Motors India can’t make the cut.The presentation shows that Toyota-Kirloskar Motors will be able to meet the targets for the first three years, 2027-28 to 2029-30, while Mahindra & Mahindra will miss the targets in the first three years. “Keeping this in mind, the proposed system will impose higher penalties on companies that do not meet the target,” an official said. The CAFE 3.0 criteria propose removing the humiliation (additional allowance) or relief for small car manufacturers, while seeking to introduce RangeExtended Electric Vehicles (REEVs), which will have a Volume Derogation Factor (VDF) of 3, similar to electric cars. VDF is a targeted government measure to promote sales of low-polluting vehicles such as EVs, REEVs and hybrids.“Given the current situation, it may take at least a few months to notify the norms. The industry will need at least a year to implement it,” said a person with knowledge of the matter.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI leads emotional Laylat al-Qadr prayers at the Royal Palace in Rabat

Morocco's King Mohammed VI leads emotional Laylat al-Qadr prayers at the Royal Palace in Rabat
Spiritual Laylat ul Qadr vigil led by King Mohammed VI held at Morocco’s Royal Palace

The holy night of Laylat al-Qadr, considered the holiest night in the Islamic calendar, was marked with deep spiritual devotion in Rabat as Morocco’s King Mohammed VI presided over a solemn religious vigil at the Royal Palace. The event brought together members of the royal family, senior religious scholars, government officials and diplomats to celebrate the Night of Power during the final days of the holy month of Ramadan. The vigil reflects Morocco’s long-standing tradition of celebrating Laylat al Qadr with royal participation. As the “Commander of the Faithful”, a title historically held by Moroccan monarchs, King Mohammed VI plays a central role in leading religious observances and promoting Islamic scholarship throughout the country.

Moroccan royal family attends holy vigil on Laylat ul Qadr

During the ceremony, the king was accompanied by several prominent members of the Moroccan royal family, including Moulay Hassan, Moulay Rachid and Prince Moulay Ahmed. Their presence highlighted the symbolic unity between the Moroccan monarchy and the country’s religious traditions. The vigil began after Isha and Taraweeh prayers and included recitation of holy scriptures and religious readings by leading Islamic scholars. One of the central moments of the ceremony was the formal conclusion of the recitation of the canonical hadith collection Sahih al-Bukhari, an important tradition in Moroccan religious celebrations marking the end of Ramadan. The recitation was led by respected Moroccan scholars, who also offered prayers seeking divine blessings for the Moroccan nation and its leadership.

recognition of Quran Scholars and students on Laylat ul Qadr

A major highlight of the Laylat Al Qadr vigil was the presentation of awards honoring outstanding contributors to Quranic scholarship and religious education.King Mohammed VI personally honored young Moroccan Quran memorizer Zaid Al Bakkali, a 10-year-old student from Sale who demonstrated extraordinary dedication in memorizing the Holy Quran. This recognition underscores Morocco’s efforts to encourage Islamic education among the younger generation and preserve traditional scholarship.Several prestigious national awards were also presented during the ceremony, including the Mohammed VI Award for Quranic Schools and the Mohammed VI Award for Ahl al-Qur’an and Ahl al-Hadith. Scholars and religious teachers from cities across Morocco were recognized for their contributions to Islamic education, mosque leadership, and Quran recitation. These awards reflect the Moroccan monarchy’s ongoing initiatives to support religious scholarship and maintain Morocco’s reputation as a center of liberal Islamic thought.

Laylat ul Qadr: The Most Holy Night islam

Laylat al-Qadr, often translated as “Night of Power” or “Night of Fate”, is widely believed by Muslims to commemorate the night when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the Cave of Hira near Mecca. The Quran describes the night as “better than a thousand months”, meaning that an act of worship performed during Laylat al-Qadr brings immense spiritual reward. Since the exact date of the night is not known with certainty, Muslims usually look for it during the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.Across the Muslim world, millions of worshipers spend the night in prayer, reciting the Quran and praying in the hope of receiving forgiveness and blessings. In Morocco, the night also has deep cultural significance. Families often celebrate babies who complete their first fast during Ramadan by dressing them in traditional attire and marking the moment with special meals and family gatherings.

Morocco’s Unique Ramadan Traditions

The observance of Laylat al-Qadr in Morocco blends religious devotion with cultural celebration. Children often wear traditional clothes such as jellaba, while girls may have henna designs on their hands. Some families also hold symbolic ceremonies where children are dressed up like the bride or groom as part of the festivities. These traditions highlight the festive and communal spirit associated with the intense spiritual observance of Ramadan in Moroccan society. The royal vigil in Rabat therefore contains both religious and national symbolism, reinforcing Morocco’s identity as a country where the monarchy plays an active role in preserving Islamic traditions. A large gathering of dignitaries, including senior government ministers, parliamentary leaders, royal advisors, high-ranking military officers and members of the diplomatic corps representing several Islamic countries, took place at the Royal Palace under the watch of Lailat ul Qadr. Their participation reflected Morocco’s diplomatic and cultural relations with Muslim-majority countries and emphasized the importance of the ceremony as a national religious event. Prayers were also offered for the late Moroccan monarchs Mohammed V and Hassan II, acknowledging their historic role in shaping Morocco’s modern state and religious institutions. The Moroccan monarchy holds a unique religious position in the country’s political system. As commander of the faithful, the king is considered the protector of Islam and the guarantor of religious unity. Through initiatives such as Quran competitions, religious education programs, and the training of imams, the Moroccan state actively promotes moderate Islamic teachings aimed at countering extremism and strengthening religious literacy. The Laylat ul Qadr vigil therefore represents not only a spiritual gathering but also a demonstration of Morocco’s broader approach to religious leadership and cultural identity. As the ceremony concluded, worshipers gathered to pray for Morocco’s prosperity and stability and asked for divine guidance and protection for the nation. For Muslims around the world, Lailat ul Qadr is a deeply spiritual moment during Ramadan, a time of reflection, repentance, and renewed faith. In Morocco, the royal vigil led by King Mohammed VI is one of the most prominent national celebrations of this holy night. The event is a reminder of the enduring relationship between faith, culture and leadership in Moroccan society, where centuries-old traditions continue to shape modern expressions of Islamic devotion.

Middle East flight chaos: Oman Air cancels services to 9 major destinations including Dubai and Doha amid Iran vs US-Israel war

ongoing geopolitical tensions in middle east Continuing to disrupt regional aviation, Oman Air has confirmed that flights to a number of international destinations will remain suspended until March 31 as airspace restrictions remain in place across the region. The Muscat-based airline said that although most of its network is operating normally, some routes are temporarily affected due to the evolving security situation and flight safety considerations.

Oman Air suspends flights to 9 destinations amid Iran vs US-Israel war

In its latest operational update, Oman Air announced that flights to and from nine cities will remain canceled until the end of March. Affected destinations include Dubai International Airport, Hamad International Airport, Amman, Bahrain, Dammam, Kuwait City, Copenhagen, Baghdad and Khasab. The airline said the decision was taken due to the closure of regional airspace, which is affecting flight routes throughout the Middle East. These restrictions have forced airlines to cancel or divert services while authorities monitor security conditions and potential security risks in the region. “Oman Air flights are operating normally with additional services on our network. However, some routes are temporarily affected due to the closure of regional airspace,” the airline said in a statement.

Oman air travelers advised to check bookings amid Iran vs US-Israel war

Passengers affected by the cancellation have been advised to manage their bookings through the airline’s digital platforms or contact customer care for re-booking and refund options. The airline also apologized to passengers for the disruption and said it appreciated passengers’ understanding and patience during the extraordinary operational situation.

Dubai, Doha routes affected: Oman Air cancels flights to 9 cities till end of March amid Iran vs US-Israel

Industry analysts say cancellations to major hubs such as Dubai and Doha could impact thousands of passengers who rely on Oman Air for regional connections to the Gulf and beyond. Oman Air’s announcement comes as airlines in the Middle East continue to adjust schedules in response to airspace restrictions and security concerns linked to the broader regional conflict. Many carriers have suspended flights, diverted planes or reduced services while officials assess the situation. The closure of airspace could significantly disrupt the aviation network as many international flight paths connecting Asia, Europe and Africa pass through the Middle East. When restrictions are imposed, airlines are often forced to take longer routes or suspend services altogether.

Aviation disruption in Gulf hubs amid Iran vs US-Israel war

The disruptions have also affected major aviation hubs in the region. Earlier in the day, operations at Dubai International Airport were temporarily suspended after a drone-related incident near the airport, forcing airlines to delay or cancel flights while authorities responded to the situation. Dubai’s flagship carrier Emirates initially halted operations and later gradually resumed flights in the morning after security checks were completed. The brief suspension highlighted how quickly security incidents can spread through global aviation networks. The Middle East plays an important role in global aviation, serving as a central transit hub connecting Europe, Asia and Africa. Airports such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi handle millions of passengers every year, making the region important for international travel and cargo logistics. When disruption occurs at these hubs, the impact is felt across airline networks around the world. Flights may be delayed, canceled or diverted, while passengers face missed connections and last-minute itinerary changes.

Travel shock: Oman Air cancels flights to 9 cities as airspace crisis deepens

Despite the disruptions, aviation authorities and airlines have stressed that passenger safety remains their top priority. Airlines are monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation and coordinating with international aviation regulators to determine when normal operations can resume. For Oman Air, the current suspension represents a precautionary measure designed to protect passengers and crew while the status of regional airspace remains uncertain. The airline said it would continue to review the situation and update its schedule accordingly. For travelers, the clear message is that flight schedules in the Middle East may remain unstable in the coming weeks as airlines react to developments in the region. Until restrictions on airspace are lifted and security conditions stabilize, disruptions on travel routes are likely to continue.

LPG situation 'worrying', government increased production by 36% in a fortnight

New Delhi: India’s domestic LPG production has surged by 36% in a fortnight to meet domestic cylinder demand, while the overall availability of cooking gas remains “worrisome”, the Petroleum Ministry said on Monday. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said consumers of both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders are being encouraged to switch to piped gas. He said city gas distribution companies have launched incentives to promote PNG connections, including free gas worth Rs 500 for domestic consumers by Indraprastha Gas in Delhi-NCR; Waiver of Rs 500 registration fee for domestic PNG connections and security deposit for commercial consumers by Mumbai-based Mahanagar Gas; and waiver of security deposit for all commercial connections by Bharat Petroleum. India is relatively comfortable as far as crude oil availability is concerned, with officials admitting that pressure on LPG supplies is evident due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint that witnesses the transit of energy supplies from West Asian countries to India. India imports about 90% of its crude oil requirements, 50% of its natural gas and 60% of its LPG requirements. More than half of India’s crude oil, about 30% of gas and 85-90% of LPG imports from West Asian countries go through the Strait of Hormuz. Unlike crude, LPG has no strategic reserves, and officials said gas was being arranged from any possible source. While India has partially mitigated the disruption in crude supply by sourcing oil from countries including Russia, gas supplies to industrial users have been reduced, and LPG availability for commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants has been limited so that domestic consumers do not feel the pinch. While Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had earlier said India was tapping more sources such as the US, Norway, Canada and Russia for LPG, officials on Monday declined to share details on the additional cargo secured so far. Sharma said no dry-out has been reported at LPG dealerships and action is being taken against hoarding and black marketing. He said online booking has increased from 84% to 90%, and delivery authentication coverage has been increased from 53% to 72% to prevent diversion of cylinders at the distributor level.
