Sandhu Ponnachan, a 36-year-old Indian national, has been charged with multiple serious offenses after a car plowed into pedestrians in Derby city centre, injuring seven people.Ponnachan faces six charges of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, one count of attempted GBH with intent, dangerous driving and possession of a bladed article, the BBC reports.Prosecutors said there was enough evidence and it was in the public interest to pursue the case.The incident happened at around 9:30 pm on March 28 at Friar Gate, a busy road in Derby city centre. Police said a black Suzuki Swift mounted the footpath and hit the pedestrians, causing panic in the area. Witnesses said they heard loud bangs and screams when emergency services arrived at the scene near the Bishop Blaze pub.Seven people, including four men and three women aged between 36 and 52, were injured. However, the injuries were not life-threatening, and many victims have been released from the hospital.

Ponnachan was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder before being formally charged. Police clarified that the incident was not being treated as terrorism and there was no threat to the public, although counter-terrorism officers assisted as a precaution.Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred said the incident “has shocked the community” and urged the public to avoid speculation that could influence the case. Officers have also appealed for CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage to assist in the investigation.

Ponnachan, originally from India, has lived in the Alvaston area of Derby for many years. He was arrested minutes after the incident and later produced in the magistrate’s court. During the brief hearing, he confirmed his personal details and showed no emotion. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Derby Crown Court on April 29.
