Shubman Gill joins criticism of Impact Player rule, says ‘it destroys skill’ cricket news
captain of gujarat titans Shubman Gill The Impact player joins the growing list of Indian players expressing concerns over the rule Indian Premier LeagueSaying that it “takes the skill out of the game.” Gill’s comments come soon after similar criticism from players like these Rohit Sharma, hardik pandya And Akshar Patel. during IPL At the captains’ meeting held in Mumbai, most of the team leaders, including Gill, reportedly pressed for a review of the rule, which was introduced for the first time. bcci in 2023 and has since been extended to at least 2027. Speaking a day after the meeting, Gill was clear in his stance against the rule, which allows teams to introduce an extra batsman or bowler at any time during the match. Gill said, “For me personally, I don’t think there should be any impact players. I think cricket is generally a game of 11 players and adding an extra batsman on the wickets that we play on, I think it takes away skill from the game.” He further explained that the traditional balance of play is being affected, especially in pressure situations where teams are expected to adapt with limited resources. “There is a certain skill in the game that you have to have. When you have a certain amount of batsmen and if some of your batsmen are out, you need to have a lot of skill to move the scoreboard and get your team to a good score.” Gill also argued that the rule was making matches more predictable and less competitive, especially on batting-friendly surfaces. He said, “With that one extra player, it is making the game more one-dimensional and it is taking the skill out of the game a bit. Chasing 180 on a challenging wicket or 160 on a challenging wicket, for me personally, it is more exciting than chasing 220 on a flat wicket.” Despite criticism from many players, the rule will remain in place for the foreseeable future and any potential review is expected only after the 2027 season. Gill said, “It will be there till 2027. This is something we also talked about in the captain’s meeting yesterday. I think it makes the game a little more entertaining, but let’s see. It is there. It is up to them what the BCCI is going to do, they will take their decision, but personally I don’t like it.”
