New Delhi: The Election Commission West Bengal on Saturday directed the Chief Secretary to suspend four Kolkata Police officers for “failing” to maintain law and order during the filing of nomination of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur constituency for the upcoming assembly elections. In a circular to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, the election panel said the instruction is based on the recommendation of state returning officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal.“The Commission has agreed to the proposal and directs that the above mentioned police officers be suspended and disciplinary proceedings be initiated against them immediately,” the circular said. The message also directed action against Siddharth Dutta, Deputy Commissioner (DC-II), South Division, Kolkata Police; Priyankar Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Alipore police station; Additional OC Chandi Charan Banerjee; And Sergeant Saurabh Chatterjee.Additionally, the Election Commission also asked state officials to ensure that its directions are implemented without any delay and compliance reports are submitted by 11 am on Monday. The poll panel also sought an immediate proposal from the state government to fill the vacant posts, including the posts of DC-II, South Division and officer-in-charge at Alipore police station. This comes after TMC workers waved party flags during the BJP’s roadshow ahead of Adhikari’s filing of nomination on Thursday. Union minister Amit Shah had also accompanied Adhikari on April 2 to file nomination papers for the South Kolkata seat, where the leader of opposition in the outgoing assembly is pitted against the sitting chief minister. Mamata Banerjee. As the convoy approached Kalighat, barely a few hundred meters from Banerjee’s residence, Trinamool Congress workers and supporters gathered on the roadside, waving green and white party flags and raising slogans of ‘Joy Bangla’ and ‘Mamata Banerjee Zindabad’.However, the situation became tense when BJP’s road show and TMC’s protest came face to face near Kalighat. For several minutes, supporters of the two rival camps stood barely a few meters apart and shouted slogans at each other.A dense cordon of police personnel formed a human wall between the two groups to prevent any clash, with officers pushing rival supporters back on either side of the road. The clash halted traffic and increased tension in the area before the BJP convoy could proceed.
