Lobster Tales, Alaska King Crab: US Defense Department spent $93.4 billion in a month on luxury items, report claims

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) spent $93.4 billion in September 2025, the last month of the fiscal year. According to TMZ, the government watchdog described it as a “use it or lose it” spending spree. The amount is the highest defense spending in a single month since at least 2008 and includes a variety of purchases, some of which were not directly tied to military operations. The watchdog group ‘Open the Books’ analyzed federal spending records and found that the department’s rush to exhaust the budget allocated by Congress included large-scale food purchases, furniture and technology items. In just one month, the Pentagon spent:

  • Lobster Tales: $6.9 million
  • Alaskan King Crab: $2 million
  • Ribeye steak: $15.1 million
  • Salmon: $1 million
  • Ice Cream Machines: $124,000
  • Donuts (272 orders): $139,224

Expenditure on luxury goods extended beyond food. The Pentagon spent $225.6 million on furniture in September, the most in more than a decade. This included premium office chairs and other furnishings as the department wanted to use up its remaining budget.Procurement of technology and equipment was also important. The department allocated $5.3 million for Apple devices and $4 million for Samsung devices during the month. Musical instruments were among the $1.8 million spent line items, including a $98,329 Steinway & Sons grand piano, a $26,000 violin and a $21,750 handmade Japanese flute.

What is ‘use it or lose it’?

Under “use it or lose it” guidelines, agencies must spend their entire budget by the end of the fiscal year or risk reduced funding the following year. In the last five working days of September 2025, the department spent more than $50.1 billion on grants and contracts alone, a figure that exceeds the annual defense budgets of many countries. The high level of spending raised questions about the use of large amounts of taxpayer dollars on non-essential items.

Marking dangers of social media, Supreme Court to hear Centre's plea on fact-checking units

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to examine the veracity of the Bombay HC’s judgment striking down amendments to the Information and Technology Rules that had allowed the Center to set up fact-checking units to flag fake social media content, making it mandatory for intermediaries to remove content or lose ‘safe harbor’ protection. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that the Center does not intend to block social media platforms but to limit the damage caused to individual, institutional and national reputation through fake social media posts, which can be prevented through the FCU.

Fake news can harm the country’s reputation: CJI

Opposing the Centre’s argument, senior lawyer Arvind Datar told a bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justices R Mahadevan and Joymalya Bagchi that the government is already empowered to issue takedown orders and a social media platform or intermediary is bound to remove or remove such content within 48 hours of receiving the notice.CJI Kant said that if a fake post destroying the reputation of a person is allowed to remain active for 48 hours, the dignity and reputation of that person will be so tarnished that it cannot be repaired.“Look at how some of these platforms are behaving. Some examples placed on record by the government show how dangerous they are. Such fake news can also harm the reputation of the country and institutions. We will examine all these issues,” the CJI-led bench said. And petitioners before the HC Kunal Kamra, Editors Guild, News Broadcasters and Digital Association and Association of Indian Magazines were asked to respond to the Centre’s appeal in four weeks. However, the bench refused to accept the SG’s plea to stay the Bombay HC decision, which would have revived the FCUs.CJI said that there is no question of staying the decision. “It is better to hear the petition and decide the matter at once,” the bench said. It also rejected the SG’s request to issue notice on the Centre’s application seeking stay on the HC decision.A Bombay HC division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Neela Gokhale had delivered a split verdict, with Justice Patel striking down the FCU while the latter upheld the validity of the rules. It was referred to the umpire judge – Justice AS Chandurkar, now a Supreme Court judge, who agreed with Justice Patel. In its appeal, the Center said, “The rule is in compliance with Article 19 and, in fact, strengthens the right of the public to have access to true and accurate information about the functioning of the Central Government. Article 19 does not confer any right to engage in knowingly spreading misinformation and as such, the regulation of such misinformation by the rule has no adverse impact on freedom of expression.”It said that the rule struck down by the HC needs to be examined from this angle also.

Twitch streamer Sakura recently talked about how she might handle a future relationship publicly following her breakup with Jason “Jasontheween”. During an IRL livestream with fellow creator Maru Lee on March 9, 2026, the topic came up when Maru asked if Sakura would ever show future partners on social media again. Sakura answered honestly and said that the decision would depend on the situation. She explained that although she likes the idea of loving someone openly, being in a public relationship online can also bring criticism and pressure. Because of this, Sakura said that any future relationships would likely remain mostly private, even if people knew she was dating someone.

Sakura explains why future relationship with Jason may remain mostly private after “Jasontheween”

The discussion lasted for about three hours and 52 minutes during the livestream. Maru Lee brought up the topic carefully and even told Sakura that she didn’t need to answer if it felt uncomfortable.Maru asked her, “Will you ever be in a relationship or post about your husband on social media in the future… like letting people know you’re together?” Sakura paused before answering and explained that she had thought about it before. She said, “I’ve thought about it a little bit. Maybe… maybe not. But I don’t know. I like the idea of loving someone openly, but I think criticism is not something that everyone can handle, especially if that person is not in the same world as us.”Her response showed that she understood both sides of public relations. It may seem natural for online creators to share the love openly, but it also brings the pressure of millions of viewers.Sakura continues by explaining that any future relationship will depend on the person she is dating. She added, “So, I think it would be very situational. And even if it were public, it would still be known, but private. If that makes sense. Like, I wouldn’t share about it. That’s to protect it.”This comment made it clear that she might accept a relationship but would avoid constantly posting about it.The topic gained even more attention due to a viral rumor earlier in the week. On March 5, 2026, an X user named @QueDeevo posted a message claiming that Sakura had shared a photo of her “new man” on Instagram and called him “the love of her life.”The post spread quickly and was viewed more than 2.4 million times. However, the claim was false. Sakura had not posted any such photo. Many users on X reported that the image and story were fabricated. At the moment, Sakura has not confirmed being in a new relationship. Her recent livestream comments suggest that if she does date again, she plans to keep it mostly out of the spotlight.
