Why manicures don’t last – here’s how you can make them last longer!

Why manicures don't last – here's how you can make them last longer!
Getting a lasting manicure involves more than just polish. Experts highlight important preparation steps like cuticle care and nail cleaning. Application techniques including thin layers and proper curing are important. Aftercare, such as wearing gloves and using cuticle oil, prevents daily wear. Nail health and manageable length also contribute to this. Understanding these elements ensures that your manicure stays fresh for weeks.

A fresh manicure should feel like it’s been on your back for at least a week or two. Regular polish usually lasts 7 to 14 days, while gel can stay strong for up to three weeks. So if your nails are breaking within a few days, something is wrong. The good news is that once you find out where things are going wrong it’s usually easy to fix.Let’s start with the biggest offender. Preparation. If this step is not taken correctly, nothing really matters. Clean, dry nails are required for the polish to stick. If your cuticles have not been pushed back properly or there is even a little oil or dust left on the nail plate, lifting begins almost immediately. Buffing can also make or break it. By over-buffing you weaken the nail. There’s nothing to catch in under-buff and polish. The solution is simple. Clean your cuticles properly, use a nail cleanser or dehydrator, and keep buffing light and controlled.Next is the application. Thick coats may seem like a shortcut but they’re one of the quickest ways to ruin a manicure. They do not dry evenly and crack quickly. Another common mistake is skipping the base coat or top coat. And if you’re taking a gel, not applying it properly can seriously affect how long it lasts. One small thing that people often overlook is sealing the edges of the nail. This step helps lock everything in place and prevents quick breakage. Stick to thin layers, let the gel cure the entire time, and always finish with a top coat. This makes a noticeable difference.

istockphoto-171379163-612x612

The shape and length of your nails also play a role. Very long nails look great but they are more prone to breaking as they undergo more stress during the day. If your nails are weak or peeling, no matter what you do, the polish won’t hold on well. Keeping the length manageable helps. Filing in one direction instead of back and forth also reduces damage. If your nails need extra support, a stronger base coat can really help. Now let’s talk about aftercare, because this is where most people go wrong. Everyday habits can silently ruin your manicure. Washing dishes without gloves, using your nails to open things, or exposing them to harsh chemicals all have adverse effects. Even leaving out cuticle oil matters more than you think. Hydrated nails are less likely to lift or break. Try applying cuticle oil daily and pay a little more attention to how you use your hands. Small changes here go a long way.Ultimately, your lifestyle also plays a role. Constant exposure to water can weaken the polish as nails expand and contract. The heat and humidity don’t help either. If you work out often or use your hands a lot, your manicure will naturally suffer more wear and tear. You don’t have to change your routine, just be a little more protective. Wearing gloves while working and a little extra care can keep your nails looking fresh longer. At the end of the day, a long-lasting manicure isn’t just about the polish. It’s all about preparation, technique, nail health and what you do after you leave the salon. Get these right and your manicure will truly last as it should.Input by Neelam Jaiswal, Nail Technician and Trainer, Looks Salon

A hidden world 2.5 kilometers below: How an underwater drone discovered France’s deepest shipwreck world News

A hidden world 2.5 kilometers below: how an underwater drone discovered France's deepest shipwreck

A new era in maritime archeology has begun with the major discovery of a French Navy-controlled shipwreck site at a depth of 2567 meters off the coast of Ramatuelle in the Mediterranean Sea. According to the official Préfet Maritime de la Méditerranée report, the ship – called Camaret 4 – is the deepest known shipwreck in French territorial waters. The site was mapped using an A6K autonomous underwater drone and contained clear images of a large merchant ship with much of its cargo still onboard. Scientists working on this project through the Department of Research into Archeology of Underwater Shipwrecks (DRASSM) believe that the site is like a scientific ‘time capsule’ as it has six cannons and approximately 200 ceramic containers that have remained incredibly intact due to the extreme pressure and absence of oxygen generated from the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. Artefacts from this ancient site will provide an extraordinary glimpse of the trade in goods during the Renaissance.

A6K how underwater drone Mapped the ocean floor in complete darkness

The discovery was made using the A6K autonomous underwater drone, which can endure abyssal zone capability, and the French Navy’s CEPHISMER team.Operational use of the A6K uses side-scan sonar and HD cameras to see in complete darkness, so is able to take hours of video, map the ocean floor and identify what was later determined to be a 16th century hull, unlike humans, who cannot go to such depths.Finding a shipwreck at a depth of 2,567 meters is more than a technical achievement; This represents a level of achievement that most standard submersibles cannot achieve. It was discovered by CEPHISMER with the A6K, an advanced autonomous underwater vehicle/drone (AUV) designed to create high-resolution maps of the ocean’s abyssal zone, where pressure is approximately 250 times greater than sea level. Using sophisticated sonar and photogrammetry, the A6K provided high-definition images to help archaeologists identify the 30-meter hull in complete darkness.

Why did France’s deepest shipwreck remain intact?

French officials have called the wreckage of Camaret 4 a scientifically important ‘time capsule’ because it is in excellent condition. In the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, the water temperature remains constant, and there is no oxygen, meaning that specific xylophagous organisms that eat wood (for example, Shipworms) cannot survive there. So, the ship’s 16th-century woodwork is in excellent condition, and the cargo – which includes piles of about 200 ceramics and plates – looks exactly as it did when the ship sank 500 years ago.

Searching for religious clues in depth

New evidence and clues about the ship’s origin have developed through high-resolution photogrammetric mapping conducted by the French Navy. Ceramics found at the site of the shipwreck, many containing the IHS monogram (the symbol of Jesus Christ), indicate that the ship was carrying goods to or from Christ-related organizations and likely came from the northern Italian Ligurian coast. In addition, the merchant ship was massively armed with six breech-loading bronze cannons and used a very large anchor and two heavy bronze cauldrons to secure her valuable cargo against 16th-century Mediterranean privateers. All these still remain in place on the sea floor.

Iran handed over Hormuz Pass to India, Pakistan, Russia, China, Iraq

In what could potentially be a major relief, Iran has said it will allow India to use the Strait of Hormuz, not only clearing the way for 20 Indian-flagged cargo ships stuck to its west to pass through the choke point, but also raising hopes that another 18 empty LPG tankers could pass through the conflict-hit 52 km strait to load cargo.According to Iranian state TV, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said, “We have allowed some countries, which we consider friendly, to transit through (the Strait of Hormuz). We have allowed transit to China, Russia, India, Iraq and Pakistan.” At the same time, he clarified that ships belonging to Iran’s adversaries will not be allowed to transit through the strategic waterway. “This area is a war zone and there is no reason to allow ships of our enemies to pass through here,” he said.

Iran, one of India’s allies, allows safe passage through Strait of Hormuz amid war zone crisis

TOI has learned that a dozen India-bound ships west of Hormuz – including five ships loaded with 2.3 lakh tonnes of LPG – are waiting to cross the strait and head towards Indian ports. “The smooth passage of all Indian-flagged vessels will improve the availability of LPG, LNG and crude oil in India,” said an official closely following the developments.India’s inclusion in Iran’s list of ‘friendly countries’ is a surprise.Once these ships reach Indian ports and offload cargo, they can be sent to take fresh consignments.” Of the 20 Indian-flagged ships in the region, some are not bound for India but for other ports, the official said.Officials said 18 LPG tankers are waiting to enter the strait to pick up cooking gas from Gulf countries.Iran’s decision to flag off ships bound for India marks the success of New Delhi’s diplomacy, with PM Modi holding two rounds of talks with Iranian President Massoud Pezhekian. Modi had stressed that the blockade of the strait (by Iran) is unacceptable. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had also contacted his Iranian counterpart Araghchi with the same request.India’s inclusion in the group that Tehran had described as “friendly” came as a surprise. Two of the five “friendly countries” mentioned – Russia and China – are viewed by Iran as partners in its fight against the US and Israel. The remaining two Islamic countries are Turkey and Pakistan, which are eagerly trying to play the role of mediator between the Trump administration and the Iranian leadership. In normal times, India gets around 27-30 LPG tankers every month to meet domestic requirements as it imports 60% of its LPG, of which 85-90% comes from Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia and UAE. To meet the shortage, the government is supplying LPG from the US, Argentina, Norway, Canada and Russia, and some cargo has already reached Indian ports through other sea routes. Two LPG ships – Shivalik and Nanda Devi – reached India last week, while Pine Gas and Jag Vasant are likely to arrive this week.According to Kpler, only 138 ships passed the energy choke point between March 1 and 23, including 87 oil and gas tankers. This means 5-6 ships a day, a 95% drop in crossings since the war began. Reports also suggest that more than 1,900 ships are unable to navigate around the Strait of Hormuz.

10 abandoned islands in the world no one dares to live on and the shocking reasons why

Around the world, some islands were once inhabited by humans but are now uninhabited due to various reasons such as environmental, conflict or economic factors. Although these islands may seem mysterious, studies indicate that abandonment is not a rare occurrence. Recently, a study on island biology showed that about 30% of islands have been abandoned within the last 150 years, especially those that are smaller and more isolated.

Study Established that abandonment is a common phenomenon on islands due to limited resources and harsh environment. Today, these islands are being used for scientific study and protected by various governments for their historical and environmental importance. From industrial sites to hostile environments, each island has a different story to tell. Natural disasters, rising sea levels and the introduction of invasive species can also make it difficult to live on islands. Over time, these pressures cause communities to move, leaving behind structures that gradually collapse. PC: AI-generated

Too many medications in old age? it may be safe to cut back

New Delhi: For many elderly people, a typical day starts with a handful of pills – for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and heart disease. But a new global review suggests that in very frail older adults, it may not always be necessary to continue all long-term medications – and in many cases, it may be safe to stop some of them cautiously. The findings, published in the journal ‘BMC Geriatrics’, come from an analysis of patients with advanced frailty, dementia or limited life expectancy – a group often prescribed multiple medications despite unclear long-term benefits. The researchers found that reducing or stopping such medications did not increase deaths or major complications in most cases. Many of these medications are meant to prevent problems years later. But for weak or seriously ill patients, those benefits may never be realized. Instead, taking multiple medications can increase the risk of dizziness, weakness, confusion, and falls, often leading to hospitalization. This pattern of “polypharmacy”, where patients take multiple medicines simultaneously, is becoming increasingly common among the elderly in India, doctors say. “They often see multiple specialists and prescriptions are not always reviewed together. In frail older adults, over-treatment can do more harm than good – for example, aspirin should be avoided for primary prevention, excessive blood pressure control can lead to deterioration, and drugs such as diuretics, insulin or sulfonylureas can cause electrolyte imbalance or hypoglycaemia. “The focus should be on reducing medications where the risks outweigh the benefits,” said Dr Pulin Gupta, professor in the department of medicine at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.“In frail elderly patients, stopping some preventive medications is generally safe if done carefully, although those with a prior heart attack or stroke need to exercise caution,” said Dr Rommel Tikku, director of internal medicine at Max Hospital, Saket. Commonly overused medications include statins, controlled diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas for primary prevention, many blood pressure medications, sleeping pills, long-term acid suppressants, and anticholinergics, he said.“The prescription should be structured — based on goals of care, frailty and life expectancy — with careful tapering and monitoring,” he said, adding that reducing medications often results in fewer falls, better cognition and improved energy levels.Families often believe that more medications means better care, but the opposite can also be true. Each added drug increases the risk of interaction. The review reflects a shift from aggressive prevention to patient-centred care, where treatment is tailored to health and preferences. Experts caution that medications should not be simply stopped; Depletion should be monitored, with each medication reviewed as required.

Unfinished business: Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings aim for IPL 2026 glory cricket news

Unfinished business: Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings aim for IPL 2026 glory

There is a special kind of peace around the teams which are standing on the threshold of some big achievement. Not the silence of absence but of anticipation. That’s exactly what Punjab Kings is bringing to the new IPL season.Last year, Punjab lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore by just six runs after topping the league stage. captain Shreyas Iyer While led the batting with 604 runs Arshdeep Singh Led the bowling with 21 wickets. This was arguably the Punjab Kings’ most complete season in the history of the franchise. And yet, at the end of it all, the trophy still wasn’t theirs.Go beyond limits with our YouTube channel. Subscribe now!Runner-up, the record books will say. But those who looked closely would remember something else. A side that had started to maximize itself. And now, as the new season approaches, they return not as hopefuls but as a team with pedigree.Shreyas Iyer stands at the center of it. In the IPL he is trusted, even assured. Outside of that, especially in the India T20 conversation, he remains a peripheral figure. It’s a strange dichotomy: a leader of the people in one area, a question mark in another. That inconsistency often sharpens cricketers. With Iyer, layers have been added to it.

IPL 2026: Ishan Kishan created a stir in the captains’ meeting!

Last season, his captaincy was not strong. This rarely happens. But this was done intentionally. A change in the field here, a change in the bowling there, the ability to maintain patience at the turn of the game. What Punjab found in him was not just a batsman who could anchor, but also a mind that could absorb chaos.Iyer, who has been one of the most active franchise captains in the IPL, has something to prove this season. Not necessarily to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), but to himself, and perhaps to the franchise he has promised to lead to its first title. It is a well-organized squad, built over two meticulous years. Punjab’s identity is no longer just about nature; It’s about balance. And much of it owes to their Indian origins, a group of players who, in many ways, mirror Iyer’s own story: talented, sometimes overlooked, often decisive.Take their top order. There is expected to be both intention and responsibility. Prabhsimran Singh was the team’s second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2025, scoring 549 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 160.53. The powerplay partnership he formed with Priyansh Arya was the foundation of PBKS’s dream of reaching the final.Prabhasimran is one of those batsmen who is made for T20 cricket – a big-shouldered, right-handed hitter who doesn’t waste the first six overs. That is no longer a possibility. The last season established him as a performer. And then there is left-hander Priyansh Arya, who burst onto the IPL stage in 2025. Arya scored 475 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 179.24, setting a record for the most runs by an uncapped debutant. His first season was sensational. But IPL is a tournament where bowlers adapt quickly. Whether Arya can match the challenges posed by better-prepared bowlers will be one of the most interesting subplots of this year’s tournament. There is a conspiracy in the middle order. Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh are probably the most underrated middle-order pair in the IPL. Wadhera scored 369 runs in 16 matches at a strike-rate of 145.84 in IPL 2025. Meanwhile, Shashank scored 350 runs throughout the season, including an unbeaten 61 off 30 balls in the final against RCB. That innings of Shashank in the final – on the losing end, knowing the title was slipping away, still dangling – told you everything about the character of this Punjab team.Where Punjab has quietly taken the lead over some rivals is in the all-rounders department. The trio of Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jensen and Azmatullah Omarzai give them seam-bowling strength and length batting, while Harpreet Brar and Suryansh Shedge add Indian options who can contribute with both bat and ball.Among bowlers, Mohd. Yuzvendra Chahal Will be the strike spinner of Punjab. Retained for a whopping Rs 18 crore, the 35-year-old Chahal is the joint highest-paid player in the team along with Arshdeep Singh. As Punjab Kings prepare to begin their 2026 campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 31, the narrative around them has changed fundamentally. They are no longer the perennial underdogs of the IPL. He’s the defending runner-up, a heavyweight contender to be reckoned with.
