World’s unhappiest countries in 2026: Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Lebanon among least happy countries world News
The latest global happiness rankings paint a difficult picture, especially at the lower end of the list. It appears that countries like Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Lebanon are facing deep-rooted challenges that go beyond simple economic concerns. The data, which measures overall life satisfaction along with several social indicators, shows scores falling below 4 for many countries. Afghanistan, in particular, stands out with an exceptionally low score. Experts say happiness rankings often reflect actual reality more than policy claims. And here, the reality appears uneven. Some countries show little resilience and others continue to struggle, with no signs of quick recovery.Check out the list of top 10 unhappiest countries in the world below, as per the World Happiness Report (WHR) 2026 report.

Least happy countries 2026
afghanistanAfghanistan is ranked last at 147th position with a score of only 1.446. That number appears immediately. The decline of −2.594 is also the steepest of this group, indicating a rapid decline rather than a slow decline. Life on the ground reportedly remains extremely difficult due to economic collapse, political uncertainty and limited access to basic services. Even measuring happiness here can be complicated, given the gaps in reliable data. Sierra Leone Sierra Leone, ranked 146, recorded a score of 3.251, a decline of -1.067. That decline is quite noticeable. The country has spent years trying to recover from past crises, yet progress appears uneven. Public systems, particularly healthcare and infrastructure, are often under pressure. malawi Malawi is ranked 145th with a score of 3.284 and a decline of −0.829. This is not the steepest decline, but it indicates underlying stress. The reports often mention economic limitations, climate-related disruptions, and resource constraints. The pressure would be felt especially in rural areas. There are signs of development efforts, although they appear slowly. zimbabweZimbabwe, ranked 144th, has seen a steep decline of −1.481. This is one of the bigger downfalls on the list. Economic instability and currency instability have been a recurring concern over the years. Daily life can reportedly seem unpredictable. Prices fluctuate, jobs remain uncertain. These factors can determine how people perceive their overall quality of life. botswana Botswana is ranked 143rd with a score of 3.464 and a decline of −0.506. Here it is often seen as relatively stable compared to others. That’s what makes this decline interesting. This may not be a sign of a crisis, but of emerging pressure points. Analysts sometimes highlight inequality and economic changes. The fundamentals appear to be intact, although small cracks may be forming beneath the surface.yemenYemen, at 142, recorded a score of 3.532, a decline of -0.522. Most of the detailed data is missing, which in itself seems important. Ongoing conflicts and humanitarian issues dominate the situation. The numbers probably represent only a fraction of the lived reality. Reports often describe widespread hardship, which may explain the declining trend.lebanonLebanon is ranked 141st with a score of 3.723 and a decline of −1.208. This is a huge decline. In recent years the country has suffered financial collapse, political instability and public despair. Everyday services have reportedly struggled. Confidence too. This decline represents more than a temporary disruption but points to deeper, ongoing uncertainty.DR Congo DRC, which is ranked number 140, receives a score of 3.761 and shows a decline of −0.817. This country is considered one of the countries that has abundant natural resources but unbalanced development. Conflict issues and poor governance in some areas are contributing to the situation there.egypt Egypt ranks 139th with an index of 3.862, a decrease of -0.411. Although this represents a smaller percentage than others, it still indicates some pressure. Inflation and cost of living are common issues that can be found in the causes of dissatisfaction. Despite continued growth in various economic sectors, this inequality can also affect the general mood.tanzania Tanzania, which ranked 138th, is unique to this group in that it is the only nation to show improvement (+0.132). Its score still shows some weakness at 3.902, yet its progress appears to be noticeable.

Sleep experts warn why you shouldn’t clean your bed first thing in the morning
Think making your bed first thing in the morning means you’ve got your life in order? think again. Every night, humans lose 285 ml to 1 liter of fluid through sweat and respiration. When you smooth out those sheets and plump up those pillowcases before your morning coffee, you’re essentially sealing the lid on a hot, humid incubator.A 2025 study in Indoor Air Journal (2026 widely cited in environmental health research) established that “Sleeping individuals release substantial moisture through sweat and respiration, which contribute to high humidity levels within bedding systems.” This confirms that humans lose significant moisture overnight and highlights that this moisture is trapped if the bed is made immediately. The average mattress is home to between 100,000 and 10 million dust mites and your clean habits could be making the problem worse. In an interview with The Times of India, Aaron M Fuhrman, founder and CEO of SleepPlay, a US-based modern CPAP and sleep therapy destination, explains why leaving your bed unmade may actually be a smarter, more hygienic choice.
Your morning bed-making habit is making you sick: The shocking truth
“Most people don’t realize that they are creating the perfect environment for dust mites every morning,” Fuhrman said. “When you realize what’s going on under those neatly laid sheets, you may think twice about making your bed right away.”Read on as we break down the science behind unmade beds and highlight some expert practical solutions to keep your sleep space healthy.
Risks of Making Your Bed Early
Quickly seal up to 1 liter of moisture released from your bedding overnight, preventing it from evaporating. This creates a microclimate of over 50% humidity where dust mites thrive and reproduce twice as fast.According to a recent news 2026 Studies in Building and Environment“Relative humidity above 50% substantially increases dust mite survival and reproduction, particularly in the bedding microenvironment where moisture is retained,” the researchers found. This showed that trapped moisture creates a humidity level where dust mites thrive and supports the idea that making the bed too early can make conditions worse.“Think of it like leaving wet clothes in a closed basket,” Fuhrman explained. “You’re trapping all the moisture overnight between your mattress and quilt, creating exactly the conditions that dust mites love.”A 2026 Household Allergen Exposure Review by the World Health Organizationreported that dust mites are among the most common indoor allergens, thriving in “warm, humid environments such as bedding and mattresses.”
Sleep experts warn that making your bed immediately after waking up traps up to 1 liter of moisture, creating a breeding ground for millions of dust mites.
The problem goes beyond dust particles. Constant moisture trapped between the mattress and heavy quilt can lead to the growth of microscopic mold. Although you won’t see visible mold spots, microscopic mold spores can grow in these moist conditions, potentially triggering allergies and respiratory problems.“For people with sleep apnea or other respiratory conditions, it becomes even more severe,” Fuhrman said. “You’re spending eight hours a day breathing an environment that can work against your health.”
Solution: How to keep your bed healthy
Experts suggest four simple strategies that can dramatically reduce moisture and dust mite populations without requiring major lifestyle changes:
- 60-minute rule: Leave your bed open for at least an hour after waking up. This simple delay allows moisture to naturally evaporate from your sheets and mattress. “Simply pull back your quilt when you wake up and let everything air out while you eat breakfast or get ready for work,” suggests Fuhrman. “It’s the easiest change you can make.”
- Strip Back Method: Pull your quilt down from the bottom of the bed, exposing the entire sleeping surface. This maximizes airflow across the sheets and mattress, accelerating moisture evaporation. “The more surface area exposed to air, the faster moisture is lost,” Fuhrman explains. “It also helps regulate the temperature of the mattress, making it less hospitable to dust mites.”
- Let it breathe: Open your bedroom windows and curtains to increase ventilation and let in sunlight. Natural light and fresh air are the biggest enemies of dust mites. “Dust mites hate dry, well-ventilated spaces,” Fuhrman said. “Even five minutes of fresh air circulation can make a real difference to the microclimate of your bed.” a fresh 2026 study in Journal of Environmental Healthnoted, “Increased airflow and exposure to daylight significantly reduces microbial load and prevents the growth of mold and allergens in fabrics.” This scientifically supports the recommendations of leaving bedding unmade, opening windows and letting sunlight in, and supports claims of naturally reducing mold spores and allergies.
- Wash weekly at 60°C: Wash your bedding weekly at a minimum temperature of 60°C (140°F). This is the range required to effectively kill dust mites and their eggs. “Lower temperatures may get your sheets cleaner, but they won’t eliminate the dust mite population,” Fuhrman said. “The 60-degree mark can’t be compromised if you want to kill them rather than just wash them.”
Benefits of unmade bedding: Reduce dust particles and improve sleep hygiene
Making your bed immediately after waking up may seem productive but in reality you are creating a perfect storm for dust mites and potential mold growth. The moisture trapped in your night’s sleep needs somewhere to go and sealing it under your quilt is not the solution. The good news is that it doesn’t require expensive products or complicated routines to get it right. Simply waiting an hour before making your bed, pulling back your covers, and opening a window can dramatically improve your sleeping environment. This is one of those rare situations where doing less actually gets you better results.

He said, “We have documents that show that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, holds three passports. The first is a UAE Golden Card, the second is an Antigua and Barbuda passport and the third is an Egyptian passport. Two of these are from Islamic countries, yet they continue to publicly claim religious observance.”

Kheda intensified the attack by linking the issue to broader allegations. He said, “You are seeing pictures of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife. Their names are linked to several allegations like land grab, misuse of temple funds, government subsidies and chit fund scams. But today, the documents we are presenting are directly related to matters outside India.” He described it as a “shocking detail”, saying that he had “not one, not two, but three passports that have not expired”.
‘Khera will have to face the consequences of his actions’: Himanta
Sarma rejected the claims as politically motivated and said both he and his wife would file a defamation case against Khera within 48 hours. He wrote onAnnouncing the legal action, he said, “I categorically reject every allegation made by them. These are malicious, fabricated and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam.” “I and my wife will be filing both criminal and civil defamation cases against Mr. Pawan Kheda within the next 48 hours. Once the truth is established in the court, Mr. Pawan Kheda will have to face the consequences of his actions and the law will take its due course.”
‘An embarrassment for Assam’: Gogoi
Assam Congress leader Gaurav also targeted Himanta and demanded further investigation. “Shocking allegations related to Himanta Biswa Sarma have emerged. Holding multiple passports and failure to disclose assets is a serious and criminal offense. How much money has he sent from Assam to his bank accounts abroad? More investigation is required,” he wrote, calling the chief minister “shameful” who “will have to answer questions and pay for his crime.”“Sarma responded again by highlighting technical discrepancies in the alleged documents. In a detailed post, he listed “serious inconsistencies” that suggest fabrications. These included “Surname mismatch – ‘Sarma’ used instead of official ‘Sharma'”, and a photograph that “appears to be a publicly available image, not a standard biometric capture”.Referring to Antigua and Barbuda passports, he pointed to an “expiry date mismatch between the printed fields and the MRZ”, while Egyptian passports reportedly showed “passport number mismatches…spelling errors (‘Egypt’) and incorrect Arabic references”.“These discrepancies strongly indicate possible fabrication or digital manipulation. Truth will prevail. Those spreading misinformation will be held accountable,” Sarma wrote. This heated argument took place a few days before the voting in Assam on April 9.
