'Anxiety among minorities': Shashi Tharoor questions FCRA amendment bill

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Questioning reports that the Center may withdraw the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, he said the move cannot be completely trusted.Speaking in Nilambur recently, Tharoor said, “The reports of the Center withdrawing the FCRA Amendment Bill cannot be completely trusted. It is difficult to understand the urgency with which the Central Government is trying to bring changes in FCRA. The bill is likely to be introduced again when Parliament resumes on the 16th.

He said the opposition would remain vigilant, adding, “The opposition will not allow any amendment to be passed that creates concern among religious minorities.”His comments come a day after opposition MPs protested at the Makar Gate in Parliament, demanding that the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 be withdrawn. He said the proposed changes could create uncertainty and concern among NGOs and religious minority groups.The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25. Though the bill was listed for consideration in Wednesday’s Lok Sabha agenda, it was not taken up for discussion.It seeks to amend the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010. The government says its aim is to increase transparency and accountability in foreign funding received in India.
