Arsalan Chaudhry pleaded guilty to Canada’s largest gold heist, which took place at Toronto Pearson Airport in 2023.
In 2023, Toronto Pearson Airport witnessed the country’s largest gold heist, as Arsalan Chaudhry conspired to steal 6,600 gold bars worth $22.5 million and millions in foreign cash. Two (now former) Air Canada employees were also part of this as the goods arrived at the Air Canada warehouse and were handed over to the wrong person who showed fake bills of lading. Three years later, Chaudhary, who was arrested in January, admitted robbery in a courtroom on Monday, the Toronto Star reported, detailing what happened in court. A handwritten ‘debt list’ was found in Chaudhary’s possession in which he had noted who would receive how much amount from the proceeds of the gold heist. The gold was melted and the proceeds went to those named persons. Crown attorney Jelena Vlasic detailed the money list police found in Chaudhry’s apartment – a ledger of $10.3 million that he had written to track the distribution of profits from the melted gold.

Police said they recovered only $90,000 worth of gold.After the theft, the getaway driver, Durante King-McLean, fled to the US and stayed in an Airbnb booked in Chaudhary’s brother’s name, the court heard. Chaudhary said that he arranged for the driver’s escape but his brother knew nothing about it. In September 2023, King-McLean was arrested after a traffic stop near Harrisburg, Penn. Police seized 65 handguns and two cell phones destined for Canada.

पढ़ाई की आड़ में संदिग्ध गतिविधियां चल रही थीं
हरीश अली सहारनपुर का रहने वाला है और मुरादाबाद के सिविल लाइंस थाना क्षेत्र स्थित कोठीवाल डेंटल कॉलेज में पढ़ाई कर रहा था. जांच में पता चला है कि वह पढ़ाई के साथ-साथ आईएसआईएस की विचारधारा से भी जुड़ा था। 15 मार्च को एटीएस लखनऊ की टीम ने पुख्ता सबूतों के आधार पर कॉलेज परिसर में छापा मारा और शुरुआती पूछताछ के बाद उसे गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया.
डिजिटल डिवाइस से मिले अहम सुराग
गिरफ्तारी के बाद एटीएस ने आरोपियों के पास से मोबाइल फोन, आईपैड, लैपटॉप और पेन ड्राइव जैसी कई डिजिटल डिवाइस बरामद कीं. फॉरेंसिक जांच में इन डिवाइस से संदिग्ध चैट, वीडियो और आपत्तिजनक सामग्री मिली है। सूत्रों के मुताबिक, हरीश कट्टरपंथी सामग्री फैला रहा था और कुछ गुप्त संपर्कों के जरिए नेटवर्क का विस्तार करने में भी लगा हुआ था।
मुरादाबाद और सहारनपुर में जांच कराई जाएगी
कोर्ट से 5 दिन की रिमांड मिलने के बाद एटीएस अब आरोपियों को मुरादाबाद और सहारनपुर ले जाएगी. सहारनपुर उनका पैतृक घर है, जबकि मुरादाबाद उनकी गतिविधियों का मुख्य केंद्र माना जाता है। जांच एजेंसियां उन लोगों की पहचान करने में जुटी हैं जो उसके संपर्क में थे.

एटीएस अब यह भी पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रही है कि आरोपी को कहां से फंडिंग मिल रही थी और उसके निशाने पर कौन-कौन सी जगहें थीं। माना जा रहा है कि पूछताछ के दौरान कई बड़े खुलासे हो सकते हैं और इस मामले में अन्य लोगों की गिरफ्तारी भी संभव है.

However, this mechanism appears to have lost some of its importance with Washington after the President returned to the White House as the US focus shifted from soft power initiatives to shared security outcomes and burden-sharing. The top US official was addressing an event at Ananta Centre. Since there is no information yet on whether Trump will come to India for the Quad summit this year, hopes for the leaders’ meeting are now pinned on the France G7 summit in June, which is likely to be attended by leaders of all the Quad countries. Colby took a dig at Europe and stressed that the US is still a rising power under Trump, but the same cannot be said about some of Washington’s traditional partners, while the US urges them to reinvent themselves. India, he said, is very different as a “rising power”. “As a result, the United States believes that India will play a central role in ensuring a favorable balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. In this context, a strong, confident India is not only good for the Indian people. It’s good for the Americans too,” said Colby, who is in India to discuss the implementation of the US-India Major Defense Partnership Framework. The official suggested that the US may not be interested in building a relationship based only on shared democratic values, as he said the Indian-US partnership is rooted in pragmatism. Colby said, “Consistently, the US approach to strategic partnerships is interests-based and realistic, shaped by geopolitics and incentives as opposed to cosmetic aspirations or detached idealism.” He said Washington wants partnerships with strong, self-confident states, not dependence. Colby also supported External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s remarks that a nationalist foreign policy approach is likely to approach the world with more confidence and more realism, saying this approach resonates with the US. Underscoring the importance of “strategic candor” in the relationship, Colby said strong partnerships benefit from honesty, respect and strategic clarity. As bilateral relations are showing signs of improvement after one of their worst phases in recent times, Colby also said the US and India do not need to agree on everything to cooperate effectively, as long as their interests and objectives are increasingly focused on the most basic issues. Patna: As the Ram Navami puja committee is all set to take out the 40 feet tall idol of Lord Ram, the district administration has directed the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) to take all precautionary measures to prevent electric shock or accident.The idol of Lord Ram will be placed on a crane which will further increase its height.When contacted, SBPDCL executive engineer (Gaya urban) Azad Kumar Singh said work was being done to fix the low hanging distribution cables. The discom is also planning to switch off power supply along the Ram Navami procession route to ensure the safety of the participants.According to Mani Lal Barik, general secretary of Ram Navami Puja Committee, a total of 105 processions will be taken out from different parts of the city and the highest number (30) will be taken out from Vishnupad area.Barik clarified that there is no tradition of distributing swords among the participants in the procession and the weapons are given only to the three best performing Akharas.On Monday, District Magistrate Shashank Subhankar and SSP Sushil Kumar inspected the procession route from Azad Park to Vishnupad. As per traditions, all the processions gather near Azad Park and then move towards Vishnupad.Officials have been briefed about crowd management protocols. DM said that adequate medical facilities and proper lighting will be ensured near Azad Park. During the inspection, the DM saw open drains and rough roads on the procession route. Expressing his displeasure, the DM directed the officials to cover the drains and level the road surface.Strong barricading is being arranged near the Kali temple in Murarpur. This is considered a very sensitive point, hence there will be CCTV coverage, adequate lighting and deputation of magistrates. A mini control room will also be set up near the Kali temple.As per the instructions of DM, high level vigilance will be maintained in areas with mixed population and sensitive identified places. The DM also directed the Executive Engineer of SBPDCL to inform the electricity consumers in advance about the power cut during the procession. Electricity consumers will have to send SMS messages indicating the duration of power cuts in different areas.

किसान मोर्चा के मंडल अध्यक्ष बृजवीर सिंह ने घोषणा करते हुए कहा कि जिस चौराहे पर प्रतिमा स्थापित की गई है उसका नाम अब शहीद भगत सिंह चौक होगा। उन्होंने बताया कि वह पिछले 25 वर्षों से अपने घर पर शहीद दिवस का आयोजन करते आ रहे हैं.
अब इस स्थान को प्रेरणा स्थल के रूप में स्थाई रूप से विकसित किया जाएगा, जहां भविष्य में भी देशभक्ति से जुड़े कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए जाएंगे। यह निर्णय स्थानीय नागरिकों के लिए गर्व का विषय बन गया।
स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में कस्बे के योगदान को याद किया गया
चौधरी रामपाल सिंह ने अपने सम्बोधन में कहा कि भोकरहेड़ी कस्बे के नागरिकों का स्वतंत्रता आन्दोलन में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान रहा है। उन्होंने बताया कि इस क्षेत्र के अनेक लोगों ने देश की आजादी के लिए संघर्ष किया और बलिदान दिया।

New Delhi: The government told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat SinghSukhdev and Rajguru – who were hanged by the then British regime on March 23, 1931 – have been martyred to achieve India’s independence and their martyrdom is a fact “not dependent on the inferred presence of the absence of official records”.“The martyrdom of these freedom fighters and their invaluable contribution to India’s freedom struggle is an integral part of the narrative of our fight for freedom and is well known in our history… Their stature is far above any award or title or status given in this regard,” junior home minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said in a written response to a question on whether the three freedom fighters were given ‘martyr’ status.Saying that their names “will always be written in golden words in the annals of history,” Kumar said the names of all freedom fighters, including Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, are recorded in the ‘Dictionary of Martyrs of India’s Freedom Struggle from 1857 to 1947’ published by the Culture Ministry. “The position of the Government of India on this has remained unchanged since 1947,” he told the House.A day earlier, on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day, PM Narendra Modi had remembered the martyrdom of the three heroes and in a post on Twitter said their ideals of justice, patriotism and fearless resistance ignite the spirit of countless Indians. Bhubaneswar: In Odisha University of Technology and Research (OUTR), Bhubaneswar, 103 teaching posts are lying vacant against the sanctioned strength of 184, affecting research and teaching work. Similarly, out of 99 non-academic posts in the university, 58 posts are lying vacant.Last Friday, Skill Development and Technical Education Minister Sampad Chandra Swain had told the state Assembly that an advertisement had been issued in 2024 to fill 92 teaching posts, which were vacant at that time. “But due to legal constraints, these posts have not been filled. Therefore, temporary guest lecturers have been appointed to meet the teaching requirements,” Swain said in his reply in the state assembly on Friday.OUTR vice-chancellor Vibhuti Bhushan Biswal said they have completed the teachers’ recruitment process that started in 2024, but are waiting for the Supreme Court order to publish the results. “Some candidates had approached the court over issues in the recruitment process. After getting the court order, we will issue appointment letters to the successful candidates. Then the vacancy issue will be resolved,” he said.Similarly, for non-teaching posts, only 41 out of the total sanctioned 99 posts have been filled, and retired government employees have been appointed temporarily as per the requirement.The Minister said that necessary steps are being taken to fill the teaching and non-teaching posts as per the prevailing rules.A university teacher said that teaching and research work is being affected due to shortage of faculty members. “Regular faculty members are overburdened with teaching, research, collaboration and administrative work. Due to work pressure, they are unable to focus on innovation and the quality of teaching and research gets compromised. To guide research scholars, we need regular teachers, as guest faculty members cannot guide PhD scholars,” he said.A BTech student from the Computer Science Engineering department said 81 regular teachers are not enough to teach or guide around 7,000 students. “Guest faculty cannot handle all the work related to research, innovation and collaboration. We need regular teachers to run the Center of Excellence. If more qualified teachers are appointed, we will get benefits in various fields including placements and research projects. We request the government to fill the teaching posts,” he said.The College of Engineering and Technology, established in 1981, was granted unitary university status on October 8, 2021 and became OUTR. Earlier, it was functioning under Biju Patnaik University of Technology since 2002.

Former West Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell has died at the age of 85 while serving a multiple life sentence in prison. He was most recently incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution-Smithfield, located about 60 miles south of Pittsburgh.According to a report by the New York Post, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spokeswoman Maria Bivens said Kermit Gosnell died on March 1 at a hospital outside the prison system. The cause of death was not disclosed.His name became nationally known after he was convicted in 2013 of manslaughter, including the death of a patient during a procedure, as well as three infants born alive.Her case attracted intense attention not only for its brutality, but also for how it fueled America’s deeply divided abortion debate.
Why his case shocked the country
Gosnell operated the Women’s Medical Society Clinic, later described by investigators as a “house of horrors”. Authorities who raided the facility in 2010 uncovered disturbing conditions, including improperly stored fetal remains, non-sterile equipment, and unsafe medical practices.Former staff testified that he routinely performed abortions beyond Pennsylvania’s legal 24-week limit.In some cases, infants were reportedly born alive and then killed by cutting their spinal cord, a method they called “snipping.”A 2011 grand jury report painted a grim picture, calling the clinic a “baby charnel house” and suggesting that many of the alleged crimes could not be prosecuted because of destroyed records.

In 2013, Gosnell was found guilty of:
- Three counts of first-degree murder (infant born alive)
- Involuntary manslaughter (death of patient due to overdose of anesthetics)
- He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Later, he also pleaded guilty to federal drug charges involving illegally distributing prescription drugs, adding a 30-year sentence.
Regulatory failures and consequences
One of the most controversial aspects of the case was not just Gosnell’s actions, but the systemic failures that allowed him to continue for years.The investigators found that:
- State officials had not inspected abortion clinics for more than 15 years
- Complaints and warnings were largely ignored
- The oversight lapse was partly attributed to political concerns about restricting abortion access.
Following the scandal, two state health officials were fired and Pennsylvania tightened regulations and inspection protocols for clinics. Gosnell’s crimes soon became an issue in the broader debate over abortion, regulation, and patient safety, several years after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. While abortion opponents cited the case as evidence of serious oversight failures, abortion rights advocates argued that it highlighted the risks of poor regulation rather than legal access.
