French automaker renault group India has been placed at the center of its expansion strategy beyond Europe under its new medium-term vision announced by François Provost, CEO. renault group On Tuesday.

As part of the ‘FutureReady’ plan, Renault is transforming India from a domestic market to a global manufacturing and export hub by manufacturing a full range of Nissan models.

The move signals a renewed effort by the automaker in India after seeing several years of sluggishness in the country. “India is the cornerstone of our plan. It is one of the fastest growing automotive markets,” Provost said.

Globally, the carmaker plans to launch 36 new models by 2030, including 22 in Europe and 14 in international markets. Of these, four new models are planned from India, including EV and hybrid, which will cater to both domestic demand and international markets.

As part of the plan, it will introduce a new multi-energy B-segment global vehicle targeting high-volume markets. Production of its sub-compact SUV Bridger concept, showcased during the announcement on Tuesday, will begin in India next year.

“We aim to start production in India next year,” said Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of Renault brand. To cater to the mass market, it will be designed to be compact, connected, secure and affordable to suit the growing urban markets.

Earlier in 2025, the carmaker had announced its plans to introduce a C-segment SUV in India under the Renault.Rethink scheme, for which it has earmarked ₹5,400 crore.

The company will leverage the highly localized Renault Global Modular Platform (R-GMP) in India to meet unique market requirements. This platform is already underpinning the upcoming second-generation Duster to be launched in India on March 17.

Outside Europe, Renault aims to achieve 50 percent electrified sales by 2030, primarily through hybrid technology. In Europe, the company expects its portfolio to be evenly split between electric and hybrid vehicles by the end of the decade.

Chennai plant will become global hub

The legacy automaker has also decided to strengthen its weakening presence in India by converting its Chennai manufacturing facility into a global production hub. “Our new flagship in the international offensive will start from India and rapidly expand to other countries,” he said. It will support local manufacturing, global exports and component sourcing for international markets, making it central to Renault’s global supply chain plan.

The plant will support local manufacturing, exports and component sourcing for international markets, making it an important part of Renault’s global supply chain strategy. The company also plans to boost the adoption of artificial intelligence in its operations and customer experience.

Renault India Domestic sales were recorded at 3,495 units in February, up 31 percent year-on-year. The company’s performance has also seen improvement with a growth of 27 percent in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2025.

The Chennai headquartered Renault arm is focusing on deepening its presence in India with the upcoming launches and the all-new Duster.

The management said that along with India, South America and South Korea are also expected to be key drivers of global growth. “India and South America will be our main growth engines, contributing more than 60 percent of volume growth in the markets where the Renault Group operates.”

Center constitutes 3-member panel to deal with ‘LPG shortage’; 10% increase in domestic production. india news

Center invokes Essential Commodities Act to regulate LPG supply amid Iran war

New Delhi: Following concerns raised amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, the Center has constituted a three-member committee to address the ongoing shortage of LPG, which has severely hit the hospitality industry.According to government sources quoted by news agency ANI, the new panel will assess the scale of disruption, consult hotel and restaurant industry associations and reorganize supply distribution to meet actual commercial requirements.

Center invokes Essential Commodities Act to regulate LPG supply amid Iran war

The panel includes executive directors of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).The step has been taken following a letter written by the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) to the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Hardeep Singh PuriMarked “widespread disruption in LPG supply at the ground level” and urged immediate government intervention. In response, a three-member committee has been tasked to interact directly with hospitality stakeholders to identify bottlenecks in commercial LPG availability and address their grievances.Officials said supplies will be reprioritized where necessary to ensure continuity for essential commercial sectors such as hotels and restaurants. The Center has already directed a 10 per cent increase in domestic LPG production in recent days, while additional consignments of LPG and LNG are being sourced from several international suppliers to stabilize the situation.Government sources said India initially faced a challenging period following the Iran-Israel conflict but has mitigated major supply risks due to its diversified oil sourcing strategy. Currently, about 70 percent of India’s crude oil imports come from fields outside the Strait of Hormuz, which provides a strategic buffer against Middle East disruptions.Officials said Indian refineries are operating at full capacity and the country is better placed than many others to make a rapid recovery once geopolitical tensions ease. Sources confirmed that no decision has been taken yet regarding the ban on refined oil exports.

Candace Owens Shut Down Erica Kirk Series 'Bride of Charlie' Due to Reportedly Declining Viewership?
Candace Owens sparked online debate after drawing attention from her controversial series about Erica Kirk. A viral social media post claimed that the series was sidelined due to low audience interest. Owens instead promoted a new episode discussing geopolitical issues, leading followers to question whether Erica Kirk’s storyline is over or simply on hold.

People started talking more about Candace Owens online when they noticed that her ongoing commentary series had suddenly focused its attention on the late conservative figure. charlie kirk and his widow Erica Kirk. The news spread quickly on social media, where both critics and fans began to wonder whether the commentator had quietly backed away from the controversial story he had promised to detail. For several weeks, the series had gained attention for teasing major revelations related to Erica Kirk. However, discussion appeared to slow down dramatically, leading some online observers to claim that the topic had been sidelined entirely. As the conversation heated up, a viral post from a popular X account fueled speculation that the change was because viewers had lost interest.

Candace Owens criticized for ‘bizarre’ Charlie Kirk theory about time-travel

Social media backlash after Candace Owens changes focus of series

A viral post criticizing the situation quickly circulated online, capturing the frustration of some viewers following the story. Message read:“Holy sh*t 🤯 Candace Owens completely sidelined her Erica Kirk series ‼️ The numbers were dropping. No one was talking about it except the people who were making fun of it. They promised there were going to be big reveals and now this. I think exploiting the Iran war algorithm was more important. The fake Erica Kirk drama can wait.”The criticism spread shortly after Owens promoted a new episode of his show, which appeared to move toward geopolitical themes rather than continuing the series as expected by many followers. In a post previewing the episode, Owens wrote:“Today on the show: – Donald Trump has completely betrayed America – Charlie Kirk was the first casualty of the war in Iran. – Israel panics at the mere thought of goyim refusing to fight their war.”The change in focus triggered mixed reactions online. Some said Owens was moving on more important global issues. Some thought the move was an attempt to get people’s attention back after interest in the previous story waned.People who track digital media trends say that content creators often quickly change the topics they cover depending on their audience’s interest. Even a well-advertised series may be stopped or replaced by a new topic that gets more people talking if interest wanes or the public conversation changes.Owens has not yet officially said whether the Erica Kirk storyline is over or simply put on hold. But the quick change in direction shows how unpredictable the online comment cycle can be. In today’s media world, a topic can be the hottest topic of discussion one week and then not be in the news the next week.

India’s campaign at the Women’s Asia Cup ended without a point but Manisha Kalyan gave fans something to enjoy before they confirmed a 3-1 win over Taiwan to reach the quarter-finals in Sydney on Tuesday.

Manisha Kalyan equalized for India with a brilliant long-range free kick in the 39th minute. His powerful left-footed strike rattled the crossbar before bouncing off the back of the line, briefly raising expectations of an unexpected result.

Those hopes did not last long. Taiwan took the lead shortly after halftime in fortunate circumstances when Su Yi-Yun’s penalty hit the post and deflected off the back of Indian keeper Elangbam Panthoi Chanu and into the net. Wu Kai-ching then set up Chen Yu-chin with a defence-splitting through ball in the 77th minute to seal Taiwan’s place in the last eight.

India finished their campaign with zero points and a goal difference of minus 14, the worst performance in the group stage. Their 11–0 defeat to Japan at the weekend had already made qualification unlikely.

New Delhi: Last Sunday was International Women’s Day. Unless you’re on a full-on digital detox, your feed will probably be buried under a mountain of Instagram stories and WhatsApp statuses celebrating the day. You probably liked something, responded to some desires, and offered a vision of your values that aligned perfectly with the purpose. In view of the occasion, the FIDE Women’s Chess Commission (WOM) and the University of Queensland on Sunday published the 2026 Gender Equality in Chess Index (GECI). In this index, India has slipped one place in the global rankings to 25th since the inauguration of the 2023 edition.

From no laptop to Chess World Cup dreams: Exclusive interview with GM Pranesh M

In isolation, the decline of a spot may not seem worrisome. But in a country currently hailed as the fastest-growing chess powerhouse on the planet, this ranking points to a deeper structural imbalance. Although there are certainly poor performing countries in the list, questions may arise as to why India is not at the top.

What is the Gender Equality in Chess Index (GECI)?

The Gender Equality in Chess Index is essentially an attempt by the global chess body FIDE to measure the gender balance in federations around the world. The idea behind this is to measure where countries stand so that they can improve.“When we created the GECI in 2023, we wanted to give federations a clear, evidence-based picture of where they stand on gender equality. You can’t improve what you don’t measure,” said Grandmaster (GM) David Smerdon, Associate Professor at the University of Queensland and lead author of the report.

changes in GECI

Change in average GECI score by continent (graphic from GECI Report 2026)

The report uses FIDE’s global ratings database and youth championship participation records to create an overall score that reflects women’s participation, performance and development pathways. According to the report, there are 1,446,605 active chess players worldwide, but only 238,716 are women, meaning overall female participation is only 16.5%.

How are rankings measured?

The GECI score is calculated using three key pillars:

  • Participation – the share of women among active rated players in a federation. (The closer this figure is to 50%, the more balanced the ratio between male and female players.)
  • Performance – The difference in strength between men and women based on average Elo rating.
  • Progress – The proportion of girls representing a country at international youth championships.

In the 2026 release, India’s overall GECI score is 71.04, resulting in it falling one place to 25th globally. However, when you look deeper, the numbers tell a story of two different Indias.

2026 GECI Report

India’s numbers in 2026 GECI report

In performance, India stands at a staggering 97.49 (up from 88.31 in 2023), proving that our elite women are world class. Still, participation is down from 18.72, and progress, the metric for the next generation, saw a slight decline to 49.09.The metrics show that while India is phenomenal in producing top-rated female players, the broader ecosystem is still struggling to get girls on board and keep them there.

Where is the shortage in India?

From Vishwanathan Anand, who inspired a generation, to teenage talents dominating global tournaments, the country now has more than 90 grandmasters. Yet, in a country of over a billion people, only four women have reached chess’s highest titles and become GMs.As GM Harika Dronavalli explained, the issue starts long before players reach elite levels. “Girls aren’t driven to achieve ambitious goals like boys are. The talent is definitely there, but societal expectations often clip those wings early on.” he told timesofindia.com.The decline is particularly visible during adolescence. Coach GM Srinath Narayanan, who has worked with many of India’s top female players, says that many promising girls leave the sport between the ages of 13 and 15.“Girls in India often face greater pressure to prioritize academic or domestic responsibilities over sports. Chess demands sustained investment, time, travel and coaching, and families may be hesitant to support girls in such careers long-term,” she said.

Even those who remain in the system face structural challenges. International Master (IM) Vantika Aggarwal reiterated that competing at the international level is an important step towards achieving Grandmaster criteria, but it is much more difficult for female players.“Playing a lot of tournaments abroad is financially challenging,” he said. “Female players don’t get much opportunity to play with stronger players, which hinders their development. And our society is still male-dominated. Women don’t get equal opportunities and support.”Young girls often compete in women-only events rather than in stronger open sections, limiting their exposure to tough opposition during critical developmental years.

What can India do to improve and bridge this gap?

While talking to this website recentlyIndia’s veteran Grandmaster Praveen Thipsay breaks down the reality of ‘individualism’ within the Indian chess ecosystem. He elaborated, “There is no system in Indian chess that will produce champions. It is basically the efforts of the parents and the players. Players have spent a lot of time and energy, and parents have sacrificed their careers, only then some have emerged as champions.”“Just because three players are performing well, it doesn’t mean that five years down the line we will have three or five players doing the same. We cannot say that it is like the Soviet school where one champion leaves and another comes. Even in China, they have a steady stream of players, especially women. Whenever one generation is no longer strong, a different generation is already arriving. These are things that don’t happen here; What we have is the individual effort of one person.Although some notable individuals have helped sow the seeds of chess culture in India, its growth has been limited to certain parts of the country rather than spreading across India. And this movement cannot reach its full potential without the direct intervention of the All India Chess Federation (AICF). But how do they achieve this?

There is no system in Indian chess that can produce champions. It is basically the efforts of the parents and the players.

The GECI framework itself provides clues about the solution.First of all, women’s participation should increase at the grassroots level. Even a modest increase in the percentage of girls playing chess would significantly strengthen the talent pipeline.Second, strong competitive experience is essential. Coaches argue that talented girls should be encouraged to play in open events early in their careers.Third, the ecosystem needs financial support ranging from travel grants and sponsorships to structured training programs specifically designed for promising female players.

Overall, the UAE blueprint outlined in the 2026 GECI report could prove to be highly effective. The UAE has climbed 73 places in the rankings, from 77th in the previous edition to now fourth, largely due to a dramatic increase in the number of girls sent to the youth championships. The country increased female participation in youth delegations from 12.5% to 43.75% in the “Progress” indicator, demonstrating how targeted policy decisions can rapidly change representation. With the support of its Sports Ministry and National Councils, the UAE has institutionalized women’s chess through an exclusive network of seven chess clubs with dedicated sections only for girls and two clubs for girls only. They have also made it mandatory to have female representation in their governing bodies.By providing logistical support to families and including women in leadership roles, such as Secretary General Dr. Maleeha Mahmoud Al Majmi, the federation has created a sustainable professional pipeline. Also read: India got its 93rd GM. Away from the board, the federation has also invested in the inclusion of female international and national referees. For India, the lesson is simple. As the data shows, the talent already exists in the country. What is needed now is a system that keeps girls in sports for a long time to create a sustainable model of development.
