Initiatives include partnering with the Election Commission, prioritizing trusted content on YouTube, and implementing advertising policies for transparency. Measures have also been taken against AI-generated content.

Google has announced a number of initiatives aimed at supporting the democratic process and protecting its platforms from abuse during the upcoming indian general election. With millions of eligible voters heading to the polls, the tech giant has said it recognizes its responsibility to connect users to reliable information and combat the spread of misinformation, including AI-generated content.
Easy access to voting information through search and YouTube
Google has mentioned that its primary focus is to provide easy access to authoritative information from trusted sources. The company has also partnered with Election Commission of India To display important details on Google Search and YouTube, such as how to register and vote, in English and Hindi.
Additionally, YouTube’s recommendation system will prioritize trustworthy content during the election season. Additionally, YouTube’s homepage will prominently feature trusted content with an “Up Next” panel to make election-related details easily available to users.
YouTube will also highlight content from trusted sources during key moments through its Top News and Breaking News, as well as News Watch pages.
In addition, the tech giant has also set up information panels that indicate funding sources from publishers that receive public or government funding and information panels that provide timely context for topics prone to misinformation.
protect against misinformation
To protect the integrity of the electoral process and protect its products and services from abuse, Google has reimplemented its existing policies to curb misinformation as well as keep its products and platforms secure. Additionally, the policies apply to all users, regardless of content type.
The company employs a combination of human reviewers and artificial intelligence models to identify and remove content that violates these policies. Google’s AI capabilities are enhancing its efforts to fight abuse, enabling faster action against emerging threats.
Advertisement during election campaign
To keep things transparent when it comes to election advertising, the company requires advertisers to undergo identity verification and provide necessary certificates from the Election Commission. Election advertisements must also include disclosures revealing the identity and location of the advertiser. Google maintains a searchable hub for all election advertising, which provides information about advertisers and their spending.
Restricting AI-generated content
Google has also taken some steps to help identify AI-generated content through new tools and policies. The company has introduced disclosure requirements for election ads containing synthetic content and will soon require creators on YouTube to label realistically altered or synthetic content. The new advertising policies prohibit the use of manipulated media such as deepfakes or doctored content to mislead people.
Google has also implemented restrictions for Gemini on the types of election-related questions it will answer and has prioritized the provision of high-quality information. Additional features, such as an “About this Image” tool in search and digital watermarking for AI-generated images, are intended to provide users with context and assess credibility.

Microsoft plans to compete with iPhone and Android smartphones with this new device

Microsoft plans to compete with iPhone and Android smartphones with this new device
Microsoft has discontinued the Surface Duo smartphone, but has filed a patent for a new foldable device with a single hinge system called ‘Spine Cover Plate’. The design aims to eliminate the hinge crease and reduce the thickness of the device while providing additional benefits and durability. However, its practicality remains uncertain.

Microsoft It didn’t have the success it hoped for with Android-powered Surface Duo-Series smart fone. The company has discontinued this lineup after Duo 2. But, this does not mean that the company has stopped trying.
New one patent application The file, filed at the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 29, suggests that the company is working on another foldable or dual-display mobile device. The patent application describes the company’s take on a foldable smartphone concept with a single hinge technology called “Spine Cover Plate.”
Microsoft’s next smartphone may have a design like Galaxy Z Fold
According to the patent application, the phone may feature a “flexible display” in a bookstyle design, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold. However, the focus is on the spine cover plate mechanism which aims to protect the single-hinge system of the device by covering the structural element.
The differentiating factor between the regular hinge and Microsoft’s design is that the spine cover automatically adjusts when the phone is opened and closed to prevent any unnecessary gaps around the hinge and protect it from dust as well as water. Currently, Samsung’s design offers IPX8 rating which makes their foldable the only water resistant.
The patent further mentions that the new hinge mechanism could allow Microsoft to eliminate hinge creases that are less visible than existing options available in the market.
Additionally, Microsoft also mentioned technologies that could allow the overall thickness of a foldable smartphone to be reduced by allowing the spine cover plate to move closer to the hinge of the device when folded.
“By retracting the spine cover plate toward the central spine, such that the first display-supporting frame and the second display-supporting frame are rotated into a face-to-face orientation, the width of the folded computing device is reduced, making it easier and more comfortable to handle the device with one hand,” Microsoft said in the patent.
The idea is interesting, but practicality is questionable
The entire smartphone market is searching for a way to eliminate the foldable crease from their smartphones. Some brands have already implemented water-drop folding mechanisms to reduce this, but there’s nothing like a crease-free foldable. Additionally, the durability of foldables is also important considering all the moving parts in these phones.
That said, adding another layer or a movable part on top of the entire foldable mechanism doesn’t seem like a wise move, despite the additional benefits and durability touted by Microsoft in the patent application.
