The incident occurred just before the final buzzer when both coaches came forward to shake hands. Instead of a normal exchange, the moment immediately turned tense, with both coaches raising their voices before staff members moved on. Both of them started speaking loudly and the officers had to separate them. Auriemma then left without greeting the rest of the South Carolina team.He later shared a candid apology. He said, “There are no excuses for how I handled the end of the game versus South Carolina. It’s different from what I do and what our standard is here in Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. The way I reacted was unnecessary.”He also said, “The story should be about how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to take away from that.”After the game, Auriemma explained why he was upset. He believed that Don Staley did not follow the normal handshake before the game. “The protocol is, before the game, you meet at halfcourt… I waited there for about three minutes,” he said. But ESPN replays showed that Staley came and greeted the UConn staff, including Auriemma, before the game.

Like, it’s surprisingly so, actually.” During the game, Auriemma had already shown frustration. In an interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, he questioned the officiating and said, “I’m not making any excuses… but it’s ridiculous.On the court, UConn struggled to score. Sarah Strong, Azie Fudd and Ashlyn Shedd combined to shoot 12 of 42. The team made only 6 of 21 three-point attempts. Nevertheless, UConn stayed close and reduced the lead to one possession twice in the fourth quarter. But they could not control. South Carolina held on and ended UConn’s perfect season. Now, Don Staley’s team moves forward. South Carolina will face the UCLA Bruins in the national championship game.
