What is the Jones Act? Trump waives 100-year-old shipping law for 60 days amid Iran war to reduce fuel prices

US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary 60-day waiver of the century-old Jones Act, aimed at reducing rising energy prices as global oil markets remain volatile due to rising tensions involving Iran. The decision allows foreign-flagged ships to transport fuel and other essential commodities between U.S. ports, a major change to long-standing domestic shipping rules. The White House said the waiver is intended to mitigate the economic impact of supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt said the move would “minimize short-term disruptions to the oil market” and ensure critical resources like oil, natural gas, fertilizer and coal can move more freely through U.S. ports. The announcement comes as oil prices have risen sharply, disrupting supply chains due to the halt of shipping routes and instability at key global chokepoints.

What is the Jones Act?

The Jones Act, officially called the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, is a US federal law that regulates domestic maritime trade.Enacted after World War I, this law was designed to strengthen the American shipping industry after heavy losses from German submarine attacks.Under the Act, any goods transported between U.S. ports must be carried on ships that are:

  • Made in USA
  • Owned by US citizens
  • Registered under the American flag
  • Crewed primarily by Americans

The purpose of the law is to support national security and maintain a strong domestic shipping fleet. However, critics argue that it limits competition and increases transportation costs, especially for fuel and essential goods.

Why the discount now?

The temporary suspension comes as global energy supplies are disrupted due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Israel and Iran.A major flashpoint has been the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. Disruptions in this sector have sharply increased crude oil prices, which has impacted global markets. In the US, petrol and diesel prices have risen sharply in recent weeks, increasing pressure on the administration to act quickly.By waiving the Jones Act, the government hopes to increase shipping flexibility, allowing foreign ships to carry fuel domestically and potentially reducing supply disruptions. The Jones Act waiver coincides with the US Treasury easing sanctions on Venezuelan state-owned oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), allowing US companies to resume business with the oil giant under some restrictions, as the Trump administration seeks to boost global crude supplies amid the Iran war.

Will it be less? fuel prices

Experts say the impact may be limited. While the waivers could improve logistics and ease transportation bottlenecks, fuel prices are influenced by the global crude market, refinery capacity and geopolitical risks. Any relief at the pump is likely to be temporary.Still, the move signals a broader effort by the Trump administration to stabilize energy markets as well as steps like easing oil-related sanctions and tapping strategic reserves.

I-PAC raid controversy: Supreme Court raised questions on Mamata's role, told Bengal government, ED cannot be left without remedy

New Delhi: The Supreme Court The West Bengal government was reprimanded on Wednesday for raising objections to the validity of Enforcement DirectoratePetition on alleged obstruction by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during raid on I-PAC.The top court said that no entity can be left without remedy under the Constitution.A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and NV Anjaria asked how the central probe agency would seek legal recourse if it was not allowed to approach courts. The apex court said, “If according to you the ED cannot file a writ petition under Article 32, then certainly it cannot even approach the High Court under Article 226. Where will they go? There cannot be a void.”The bench also pulled up Mamata on the charge of obstructing officials during the raids and said it gives rise to major constitutional concerns.Appearing for the state, senior advocate Shyam Diwan argued that the ED is not a judicial entity and hence cannot file a writ petition. He said only the Union of India has the authority to initiate such proceedings and warned that allowing departments to independently invoke writ jurisdiction could disrupt the federal structure.Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Mamata, also argued that the ED cannot seek directions for a CBI investigation into the alleged obstruction. This comes after the central agency, in its petition, had sought registration of an FIR against Banerjee and the police officials. It has also challenged an FIR filed by the West Bengal Police against its officers.Earlier, on January 15, the apex court had termed the alleged obstruction as “very serious” and stayed the FIR against the ED officials who conducted the raid. It also directed the West Bengal Police to preserve the CCTV footage of the operation. The court had also issued notices to Banerjee, the West Bengal government, former DGP Rajeev Kumar and other senior police officials on the ED’s plea seeking a CBI probe into the alleged obstruction.

‘Better to live in Dubai’: Gym boss flees ‘petty crime’ in London, calls UAE safe despite missile threats | world News

'It's better to live in Dubai': Gym boss flees 'petty crime' in London, calls UAE safe despite missile threats
Rory McEntee moved from the UK to Dubai in search of a safer environment to escape London’s persistent petty crime and achieve a better quality of life / Image: LinkedIn

A British businessman stranded in Britain amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East has said he was “desperate” to return to Dubai, insisting the emirate is safer than London despite Iranian retaliatory attacks targeting the Gulf region.Dubai-based gym executive Rory McEntee criticized the UK government for offering “zero assistance” as he was stuck in Britain due to flight disruptions while thousands of others headed in the opposite direction.

People stranded in Britain as flights disrupted due to conflict

McEntee, 43, had traveled to the UK to visit friends on February 25 and was due to fly back to Dubai on March 1 when the conflict between Iran and the US and its allies escalated, leading to widespread airspace closures across the Middle East.

Speaking candidly to the Daily Mail, he said he was finding himself unable to return home due to flights being repeatedly disrupted.“I’m surprised I didn’t get any help from the UK government. The UAE is helping all Britons who were stranded there when the conflict started, paying for their flights, hotels, meals and taxis.“But as a UAE resident, no one in the UK offered any help to me, which honestly I find strange.“I was getting no help from the UK – as a taxpayer for 17 years I thought I would at least get some kind of support. But British Airways only offered a full refund or to book me on the next flight.”More than 140,000 Britons registered for government updates in the Middle East as the situation escalated, according to reports, with the Foreign Office confirming that around 7,500 people had returned to the UK from the UAE since the beginning of March.McEntee described being in a “fluid state” due to flights being repeatedly rescheduled, and said: “I’ve been spending several days online and on the phone trying to figure out what my options are.”

‘Still safer than London’

Despite missile and drone attacks on parts of the UAE, McEntee said he felt safer returning to Dubai than living in London. The UAE confirmed it was targeted by a ballistic missile and multiple drones as part of a wider Iranian retaliation, with an attack reported on an industrial area in Dubai and a drone missing from the Burj Khalifa.

Nevertheless, McEntee told the Daily Mail that he would like to stay in the UAE.“I think most expatriates would prefer to stay in the UAE right now rather than return to the UK.“As 90 per cent of drones have been dealt with, so for me there is a sense of safety in the UAE. It is definitely a place I would rather be in than London right now and not have to deal with petty crime on a daily basis.”During his week-long stay in Britain, he said he saw “persistent petty crime”, including two phone robberies in broad daylight, and he also saw “men in balaclavas attacking you on e-bikes”.He said a female friend had asked him to take the Tube to her home because she felt unsafe, describing it as “no way to live”.

Return to Dubai and continue life

McEntee, who runs Gymnation with other British expats in Dubai, has since returned to the Emirates on what he described as an almost empty flight.Despite the regional conflict, Rory McEntee said daily life in Dubai is largely continuing as normal. “It was business as usual,” said the Dubai-based gym executive, adding that people continued to go to work, go to the gym, meet friends and feel safe.He criticized a section of the UK media for blowing the situation out of proportion. writing on linkedin, McEntee said the coverage “does not match what I am hearing directly from my family, friends and colleagues in Dubai.” He said that, despite some international bullying and reports of influential holidaymakers, he currently feels safer in Dubai than in London. At one point, McEntee set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of another ticket while he tried to secure a return flight to Dubai, raising £660 from supporters. He clarified laterWriting on LinkedIn that the UAE government had covered the cost: “Many thanks to those who donated on the GoFundMe page, but refunds are coming as soon as the UAE government picked up the tab. Thank you for all the messages of support and happy to say I am safe now.”

“When we had our baby I moved to Dubai with my wife and realized the UK was not the place I wanted to raise a child,” he said. “We also moved for the better quality of life, sunshine, career opportunities – and obviously the tax breaks are a bonus, but not the main reason to move.”

There has been a long-standing concern about crime in London

This is not a new situation for McEntee, who has been vocal about security concerns in the UK.Last year, Gymnation launched a self-defense retreat in Dubai aimed at Londoners amid rising phone thefts in the capital. The six-week program was marketed as free, provided participants could cover their own flights and accommodations, and received approximately 600 sign-ups.Explaining the idea at the time, McEntee said the idea came after four of his London-based friends had their phones stolen, prompting him to “give Londoners an escape” and “provide a new solution to restore Londoners’ confidence”.She said self-defense is meant to “empower and give people more confidence”, as participants talked about increased anxiety and said they no longer felt safe walking alone at night. The campaign gained popularity online and was promoted across boroughs including Southwark and Hackney, tapping into widespread concerns about what organizers described as a worsening “phone theft epidemic”.

‘Sack him’: Keir Starmer criticizes Nick Timothy over ‘act of supremacy’ comments on Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square

'Sack him': Keir Starmer criticizes Nick Timothy over 'act of supremacy' comments on Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticized Conservative MP Nick Timothy over his comments on Muslims praying at an open Iftar gathering in Trafalgar Square. Speaking in parliament, Starmer accused the Conservatives of having a “problem with Muslims” and called on Tory leader Kemi Badenoch to sack Timothy from the shadow cabinet.

what did starmer say

Starmer said Timothy had suggested that “Muslims practicing their faith while publicly praying, including the Mayor of London, are not welcome.”He added, “He called it an act of domination. Straight from Islamist ideology. If he were on my team, he would have left. This is completely appalling. They should condemn his comments and fire him.”

Reiterating his point, Starmer said: “When I see religious gatherings in Trafalgar Square, when I see Hindus celebrating Diwali, when I see Jews celebrating Hanukkah, when I see Christians demonstrating the Passion of Christ or Muslims praying, it shows the great strength of our diverse city and country.”He added, “I have never heard his party call for anything other than Muslim events. It only happens when Muslims are praying. The only conclusion is that the Tory Party has a problem with Muslims.”

Nick Timothy faced criticism

Timothy’s comments, in which he publicly called mass prayer an “act of domination”, were widely criticized politically. Independent MP Adnan Hussain called his comments “outrageous”, questioning whether similar objections to gatherings were raised by other religions.Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy accused them of “fanning the flames of division”, while Labor deputy leader Lucy Powell described the reaction as “extreme”.Although some Conservatives supported Timothy, party leaders defended his comments, saying they stood up for “British values”.

‘London is for everyone’: Sadiq Khan

London Mayor Sadiq Khan countered the criticism by highlighting the diversity of the city.Sharing photos of the gathering in Trafalgar Square and other multi-faith gatherings, Khan stressed unity across communities, saying London “will always be a place for everyone”.The controversy began when Timothy posted a video from an open iftar event organized by the Ramadan Tent Project, which hosts public gatherings during Ramadan. Sharing the video, he wrote, “Congregating prayers in public places is an act of dominance,” and said such incidents “should not happen again.”The event in Trafalgar Square was attended by people from many religions and backgrounds.
