US President Donald Trump has extended a ceasefire with Iran while maintaining a blockade around the Strait of Hormuz, saying Tehran is suffering huge financial losses and must present a unified proposal before talks can move forward.In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran was losing vital oil revenue due to the closure of key shipping routes. He wrote: “Iran does not want the Strait of Hormuz closed, they want it opened so they can make 500 million dollars a day (so, how much are they losing if it is closed!). They only say they want it closed because I have completely blocked it (closed it!), so they only want to “save face”. Four days ago people contacted me and said, “Sir, Iran immediately Wants to open the strait.“But if we do, there can never be a deal with Iran unless we blow up the rest of their country, including their leader!”Earlier, Trump announced the ceasefire extension, saying it came after requests from Pakistan military chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He said the US military would remain prepared to continue the blockade until Iran’s leadership offered a common negotiating position.Trump wrote: “Based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fragmented, not unexpectedly and, at the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, we have been asked to pause our attack on the country of Iran until their leaders and representatives come together with a unified resolution. I have therefore directed my forces to continue the blockade and to remain ready and capable in all other respects, and will therefore extend the ceasefire until they Do not do this. The motion is presented, and the discussion is ended one way or the other.“Iran immediately rejected the move. Mahdi Mohammadi said Washington has no right to impose conditions after setbacks in the conflict.He posted on the “Now is the time for Iran to take the initiative.”Pakistan welcomed the expansion and portrayed itself as a mediator. Sharif thanked Trump for accepting Islamabad’s request and said he hoped the two sides would reach a permanent agreement during the second round of talks to be held in Islamabad.“I sincerely hope that both sides will continue to abide by the ceasefire and will be able to reach a comprehensive ‘peace agreement’ during the second round of talks to be held in Islamabad for a permanent end to the conflict,” Sharif said in a post on ⁠X.The latest extension follows the collapse of an earlier diplomatic effort after 21 hours of talks in Islamabad failed.
