British comedian Peter K's show abandoned midway due to 'suspicious bag', Birmingham Arena alerted

Comedian Peter Kay was forced to leave the stage mid-performance after a suspicious bag at a Birmingham venue prompted police to respond and disperse. The incident occurred at the Utilita Arena on Friday evening, about 45 minutes into Kay’s show, when the performance was suddenly stopped and the audience was asked to leave.West Midlands Police later confirmed that the venue had been searched and a 19-year-old man had been detained. Arena officials said the building was evacuated as a precaution and later declared safe.At first, many in the crowd believed the interruption was part of the action, before the situation became clear.Steve Aspinall, who traveled from Devon with his wife to attend the show, told how the events happened.“Two men came on stage, one was wearing headphones and a microphone and the other whispered in her ear and pushed her off the stage,” she told BBC News.He said the audience was then informed that the show could not continue.“We were told that due to unexpected circumstances the program could not be continued and announcements could not be heard,” he said.Aspinall said initial confusion quickly turned to concern as people began leaving the grounds. He said, “At first I and many other people thought it was part of the show, but then the lights came up and everyone started moving out.”“Because it’s today, I said to my wife, I don’t know if it’s a bomb threat or not, but the fact that they didn’t say anything means no one panicked.”Videos shared on social media showed large crowds leaving the 15,000-capacity ground, while several police cars and riot vans were seen arriving at the scene. In a post on X, the venue said: “The safety and security of our customers and colleagues is our top priority.”It added that ticket holders will be contacted directly for more information.K is to perform on the field again on Saturday at 20:00 as part of his better late than never TravelThe incident comes a day after the UK raised the terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe” following a stabbing in Golders Green, north London.Police said the investigation into the Birmingham incident is ongoing.
