Kolkata: As promised, PM Modi will return to Kolkata to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected BJP government at 10 am on Rabindra Jayanti on May 9 at the Brigade Parade Ground. The PM will be accompanied on the stage by Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin and chief ministers of all NDA ruled states. Shah is scheduled to reach Kolkata on Friday at 4 pm to attend the meeting of BJP MLAs and select the new chief minister. Suvendu Adhikari, who has now defeated Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee twice in the elections, is the frontrunner among the probables. The names of a tribal MLA from North Bengal and a “bhadralok” MLA from an urban area of South Bengal are being considered for the post of Deputy CM. The last time Bengal had a Deputy CM was in 2000, when Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was made the Deputy CM under the then CM Jyoti Basu. Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony began at the Brigade Parade Ground on Wednesday, with senior officers reviewing the ground layout. State BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya reached the state secretariat Nabanna to discuss the details with the chief secretary and home secretary. Shah will meet BJP MLAs on May 8. The legislature party leader will be announced there,” Bhattacharya said. Party seniors said the meeting is likely to be held at the Vishwa Bangla Convention Centre. “We want to accommodate as many experienced workers as possible, and we will look for the right mix of experienced and new candidates,” said a BJP senior in New Delhi. Bhattacharya said the state secretariat would eventually shift back to the Writers’ Building. “We promised it in 2021.” Sources said a large number of party seniors, celebrities and Padma awardees will be invited to the swearing-in ceremony.
