Real estate agent Raj Singh says he has experienced verbal racist abuse

An Indian-New Zealand real estate agent has spoken out after years of targeted harassment by a neighbour, including eggs being thrown at her cars, garbage being thrown outside her home and repeated racist abuse.Raj Singh said the attacks began in 2018 and have continued since then, leaving his family distressed and fearful, especially as his children were still living at home.According to the NZ Herald, Singh said a man had previously urinated on his fence after trespassing on his property. Singh also said that the man had once hit his fence with such force that it almost broke.The man was convicted of disorderly conduct in 2020. Singh said she had made several complaints over the years, but the harassment started again in March after some time.According to Singh, the most recent incidents involved verbal abuse targeting his ethnicity. She said comments included: “F*** India”, “F*** Indians”, “I hate Indians” and “I hate you all”.Earlier this month, Singh reported another incident of verbal abuse to the police. When officers arrived they were unable to locate the man. Manukau Central Area Commander Inspector Adam Payne said, “Police inquiries are still ongoing, and we intend to speak to them.” [person] Further,” adding, “No one in the community should have to experience this verbal abuse.”Police also confirmed that they would take action if the person breached Singh’s no-trespass order.Singh has lived in New Zealand for almost four decades and also serves as a Justice of the Peace. He said the situation has affected his family. She said her children were “very scared and stressed” during the worst of the abuse and added, “My family and I have lived in New Zealand for almost four decades – it is our home.He said he took “racial discrimination and racist abuse extremely seriously” and has reported his experiences to the Human Rights Commission.The case comes amid growing concern over racially motivated incidents in New Zealand. In December, a group known as the True Patriots of New Zealand disrupted a Sikh religious parade in South Auckland. Earlier this year, RNZ reported on police hate crime data which showed that people of South Asian origin were the most targeted group for racial abuse.Camille Nakhid, a social sciences professor at Auckland University of Technology, said racial tensions rise during elections, especially for Indian communities. He added, “You have to get rid of racism, you have to get rid of our colonial mentality.”
