Pentagon chief says AUKUS will develop undersea unmanned vehicles
SINGAPORE: The United States, Britain and Australia are working together to develop undersea unmanned vehicles as part of their trilateral AUKUS defense agreement, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters on Saturday.Deliveries of the vehicles will begin in 2027, Acus said in a joint statement.The statement said the program will improve the three countries’ reconnaissance and strike capabilities, “and enhance superiority in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare and competitive maritime maneuvers.”The program falls under the so-called “Pillar Two” of AUKUS to develop advanced defense technologies, including quantum computing, undersea, hypersonics, artificial intelligence and cyber technology.“The signature project will deliver a suite of highly adaptable multi-mission UUV payloads designed to support undersea operations and maintain our collective advantage in the maritime domain,” Hegseth said.(This is a Reuters story)
