DK Shivakumar goes into damage-control mode after 'closest friend' Ramalinga Reddy drops out of Karnataka cabinet

New Delhi: Chief Minister of Karnataka DK Shivakumar on Friday reacted to Ramalinga Reddy’s resignation as minister, saying there was “nothing to worry about”. Reddy’s resignation comes days after Siddaramaiah stepped down as CM and Shivakumar was made the new Chief Minister of the state.The change of power in Karnataka took place after intense debate and discussion within the top Congress leadership, with veteran politician Siddaramaiah handing over the top post to his deputy DK Shivakumar.Speaking to reporters, newly appointed CM Shivakumar said, “No need to worry. He is a very good friend. We are the closest friends in the cabinet. We will find a solution to the problem.”CM DKS said in Kannada, “Ramalinga Reddy is my colleague and our senior leader. He said that he cannot go to the village and work. He said that I should give him some other ministerial post. I will talk to Ramalinga Reddy and make everything fine.”Earlier in the day, senior Congress leader R Ramalinga Reddy tendered his resignation, expressing strong displeasure over his allotted portfolio, just two days after taking oath in the new DKS cabinet.Reddy alleged that CM Shivakumar has taken a “U-turn” on the assurance given in 2023 regarding the Bengaluru development portfolio. According to Reddy, he was promised this department with the understanding that it would be allotted to him after Shivakumar became the Chief Minister after two and a half years.Expressing disappointment over the portfolio allocation issue, Reddy said, “I have been insulted again and again, can’t take it anymore.”He also refused to leave the party. He said, “I will remain a Congress MLA and will remain in the Congress only.” He said that he cannot go against his conscience.Reddy also mentioned his long association with the party, saying he has been with the Congress for 53 years and will remain a loyal member despite stepping down from the ministerial post.Meanwhile, the resignation coincided with Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Karnataka.
