Investigation into the death of Dalit woman MP, Supreme Court directs CBI

New Delhi: Supreme Court On Wednesday, the CBI was directed to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 20-year-old Dalit woman in MP’s Sagar district in 2024. It rejected the state’s contention that the case was politically motivated, and said the truth must come out.A bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and N Kotiswar Singh said its conscience does not allow it to accept the state government’s plea and ordered a probe by a central agency. The court left the responsibility of taking the decision on registering the FIR to the CBI.The Supreme Court had last year issued notice on a plea by the woman’s mother, who was seeking a CBI or SIT probe into the death of three family members.
