House panel suggests increasing minimum pension under EPS
New Delhi: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labor suggested that the government raise the minimum monthly pension under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) for lakhs of retired workers from the current Rs 1,000 to a more “realistic and respectable level”, in line with the current cost of living.“The Committee is of the view that the existing minimum pension amount is inadequate to meet even the basic needs of pensioners, especially in the current economic scenario affected by inflation and rising health care and living expenses,” it said.“The (Labour) Ministry should urgently and comprehensively review the minimum pension with a view to raising it to a more realistic and respectable level,” it said, adding that the government has received several representations from pensioners demanding an increase in it.
