Traffic halted in Guwahati due to show of strength by candidates before filing nominations

Guwahati: Traffic in Guwahati came to a standstill for hours on Monday as candidates from five assembly constituencies in the city took out nomination rallies, causing heavy congestion on major roads.Among those who filed nominations was Dispur BJP candidate Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the party after quitting the Congress five days ago.BJP candidates Pradyut Bordoloi in Dispur, Diplu Ranjan Sarma in New Guwahati, Vijay Kumar Gupta in Guwahati Central and party ally Asom Gana Parishad’s Tapan Das in Dimoria (SC) submitted their nomination papers for the April 9 assembly elections.BJP and AGP candidates held a joint rally of over 5 km from the veterinary playground in Khanapara to Ganeshguri. The party claimed that around 40,000 supporters and workers joined the procession. The rally was stopped at Ganeshguri and did not proceed towards the District Commissioner’s office in Hengerabari as the district administration, in an order issued on Sunday, had banned rallies on the 1-km Ganeshguri-Hengerabari stretch to prevent crowding on the narrow road.Congress candidate Shantanu Bora filed his nomination for New Guwahati, while Meira Borthakur Goswami filed her nomination for Dispur. His colleague Assam Jatiya Parishad candidate Kunki Chaudhary filed nomination for Guwahati Central.Bordoloi said, “I have started a new journey with gratitude. I thank all the party workers, including the grassroots level workers, for extending their maximum support. I congratulate our opposition candidate (Mira Borthakur Goswami) and want to remind her that the final decision will be given by the votes in the ballot box.”Goswami said voters have seen the “injustice committed in the state” and will “give a befitting reply in the elections to those who have done injustice to the people.”AGP candidate Tapan Das said his nomination came after almost three decades in the party. “After 27 years of service in AGP, I was nominated and for this I thank Atul Bora, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Dilip Saikia… I also seek the blessings of the people of Assam,” he said.Kunki Chaudhary, who is contesting against veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Gupta in Guwahati Central, said she is new to politics but is confident of working for the welfare of the people in her constituency.Gupta appealed to the public for support before the elections. “We need the blessings of the people of Assam, Guwahati. I am grateful to our central leadership for this opportunity,” he said.
