IPL 2026: Bangladesh Govt. The doors of broadcasting opened in the country. cricket news
Bangladesh has signaled a significant change in its stance on the broadcast of the Indian Premier League (IPL), newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Zaheer Uddin Swapan confirmed that there is no restriction on broadcasting the tournament in the country. The development comes after uncertainty over IPL telecast following the ban imposed by the previous interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus. The earlier directive had barred local channels and operators from telecasting the tournament, denying fans access to one of the world’s most popular T20 leagues.
However, the new administration appears to be adopting a more flexible and commercially driven approach. Speaking to Deutsche Welle, Swapan clarified that no broadcaster has formally applied for broadcast rights, but assured that any such request will be considered positively.Swapan said, “No one has applied to us to broadcast IPL. We do not want to mix politics with sports. We will look at it from a commercial perspective.”He further stressed that the government would not impose restrictions on broadcasters, including international networks. He said, “We will not stop anyone from telecasting it. If Star Sports wants to telecast it, they can. If any of our channels want to telecast it, we will take it positively, but we will not do any coercion.”The Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh has also supported the move. Office Secretary Rezaul Karim Labloo confirmed that there is currently no directive to stop the telecast of IPL in the country.“If Star Sports broadcasts the IPL in Bangladesh, they can do so because no one has asked us to stop it,” LaBlue said.He further said that the earlier instructions issued by the interim government are no longer valid.“Those instructions have no significance now. If the current government asks us to stop it, we will do so, but there are no such instructions as of now,” he said.
