Tamil Nadu Elections 2026: Velumani says DMK has not implemented any meaningful project for Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Former AIADMK minister SP Velumani on Tuesday said the DMK government has not implemented any “meaningful infrastructure project” for Coimbatore. He said the only project the ruling party can point to is Semmozhi Poonga, which is not even their original vision but a dream associated with late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.Velumani made the remarks while introducing sitting Coimbatore North MLA Amman K Arjunan, whom the AIADMK is fielding in Coimbatore South for the April 23 assembly elections. He appealed to the workers to campaign door to door and defeat DMK candidate V Senthil Balaji by a margin of 50,000 votes.“Coimbatore South stands out as a star constituency because of its development, all of which was implemented during the AIADMK period. All the flyovers including the Sungam flyover and Ukkadam flyover and all the smart city projects, especially the rejuvenation of the seven lakes, were implemented during the AIADMK regime. But DMK has completely failed to maintain all these features. We have to win in this constituency to maintain our reputation and prestige, Velumani said.He said the DMK’s five-year rule has led to an increase in property taxes, electricity charges and cost of construction materials. He said, “There are long delays in important projects like Athikadavu-Avinashi Scheme II, which is disrupting water supply in many areas. Without resolving these problems, the DMK keeps blaming the Central government that the Center has done nothing for the state, which is baseless.”Velumani attacked TVK leader Vijay. Referring to the Karur tragedy, in which 41 people lost their lives, he said Vijay could not even protect his party workers. How can he be trusted to stand up for the people? He appealed to the workers not to allow any third party, especially TVK, to secure even a single vote in Coimbatore.Addressing the gathering, Arjunan from Amman said that this election will be a fight between democracy and capital power. He said, “What else can the DMK tell us in this south constituency other than Semmozhi Park? Coimbatore is and will remain the fort of AIADMK.”
