The airline’s promoter and MD Rahul Bhatia had taken over as CEO in the interim following the resignation of Peter Albers with immediate effect last month. Albers, then chairman and CEO of KLM, was brought to IndiGo about four years ago to expand its international footprint. While the overseas footprint expanded significantly after the collapse of the December schedule, Albers tendered his resignation. Bhatia said the collapse of the program “should never have happened.”Now, IndiGo has picked up an industry veteran who can help it expand globally. Walsh, who will take over in August, is a trained pilot who has been CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways and then International Airlines Group, a holding company that owns those two airlines along with Iberia, Level and Vueling. He began his career in aviation in 1979 as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus.

Willy, as Walsh is popularly known, will complete his tenure at IATA on July 31, 2026 and is expected to join IndiGo by August 3.A mail sent by Rahul Bhatia to employees on Tuesday informing them of Wille’s appointment as CEO read ‘a guest for a few days’. And the letter sent on March 10 to announce Albers’s resignation was signed as “I am not”.On his appointment, Bhatia said: “As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willy to IndiGo.
