Guwahati: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the BJP-led government has triggered “unprecedented development” in Assam by restoring peace, claiming that over 7,500 militants have laid down arms and returned to the mainstream.Addressing a rally in Tezpur for Assam Gana Parishad candidate Prithviraj Rabha, Singh said the Centre’s policies have weakened extremism, terrorism and Naxalism across the country. The AGP is contesting the assembly elections as part of the BJP-led alliance.“Be it terrorism, Naxalism or insurgency, all of them are heading towards the end under the Modi government. More than 7,500 militants have laid down arms and returned to the mainstream in the state,” Singh said. He said the development seen under Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been “magical”. He also appreciated the efforts to free the land from encroachers.Attacking the Congress, he accused the party of neglecting Assam and doubting its potential. Referring to the criticism of projects like the Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, he said Congress leaders had made a mockery of the BJP’s development agenda. He criticized Congress’s Priyank Kharge for his remarks raising questions on the plant. “Congress has misused the talent of the youth of Assam,” Singh said.On illegal immigration, he said, “No illegal infiltrator will be able to live in Assam.”Later, at a rally in Dergaon for BJP candidate Mridul Dutta, Singh said the Congress had given Assam “step-motherly treatment”, keeping it away from Delhi, which had led to voters rejecting it.
